Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basing his study on some two-hundred-and-fifty German novels, memoirs, fictionalized histories, and films (including Das Boot), Michael Hadley examines the popular image of the German submarine and weighs the values, purposes, and perceptions of German writers and film makers. He considers the idea of the submarine as a war-winning weapon and the exploits of the "band of brothers" who made up the U-boat crews. He also describes the perceptions of the German public about the role of the U-boat in the war effort and the hopes that it carried for victory in two world wars against the Allied forces. Analysed in context, the U-boat emerges as a central factor and metaphor in Germany's ongoing struggle with its political and military past. In Count Not the Dead Hadley explores the complex relationships between political reality and cultural myth, and draws important conclusions about the way in which Germans have interpreted their past and how present concerns change these views.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epic Landscapes is the first study devoted to architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe’s substantial artistic oeuvre from 1795, when he set sail from Britain to Virginia, to late 1798, when he relocated to Pennsylvania. Thus, this book offers the only extended consideration of Latrobe’s Virginian watercolors, including a series of complex trompe l’oeil studies and three significant illustrated manuscripts. Though Latrobe’s architecture is well known, his watercolors have received little critical attention. Epic Landscapes rediscovers Latrobe’s watercolors as an ambitious body of work and reconsiders the close relationship between the visual and spatial sensibility of these images and his architectural designs. It also offers a fresh analysis of Latrobe within the context of creative practice in the Atlantic world at the end of the eighteenth century as he explored contemporary ideas concerning the form of art for Republican society and the social impacts of revolution. Book excerpt: An investigation of what makes digital games engaging to players and a reexamination of the concept of immersion. Digital games offer a vast range of engaging experiences, from the serene exploration of beautifully rendered landscapes to the deeply cognitive challenges presented by strategic simulations to the adrenaline rush of competitive team-based shoot-outs. Digital games enable experiences that are considerably different from a reader's engagement with literature or a moviegoer's experience of a movie. In In-Game, Gordon Calleja examines what exactly it is that makes digital games so uniquely involving and offers a new, more precise, and game-specific formulation of this involvement. One of the most commonly yet vaguely deployed concepts in the industry and academia alike is immersion—a player's sensation of inhabiting the space represented onscreen. Overuse of this term has diminished its analytical value and confused its meaning, both in analysis and design. Rather than conceiving of immersion as a single experience, Calleja views it as blending different experiential phenomena afforded by involving gameplay. He proposes a framework (based on qualitative research) to describe these phenomena: the player involvement model. This model encompasses two constituent temporal phases—the macro, representing offline involvement, and the micro, representing moment-to-moment involvement during gameplay—as well as six dimensions of player involvement: kinesthetic, spatial, shared, narrative, affective, and ludic. The intensified and internalized experiential blend can culminate in incorporation—a concept that Calleja proposes as an alternative to the problematic immersion. Incorporation, he argues, is a more accurate metaphor, providing a robust foundation for future research and design.

But Madison Brooks took destiny and made it her own a long time ago. She’s Hollywood’s hottest starlet, and the things she did to become the name on everyone’s lips are merely a stain on the pavement, ground beneath her Louboutin heel. Just as their hopes begin to gleam like stars through the California smog, Madison Brooks goes missing. . . . And all of their hopes are blacked out in the haze of their lies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer Lives across the Wall examines the everyday lives of queer Berliners between 1945 and 1970, tracing private and public queer life from the end of the Nazi regime through the gay and lesbian liberation movements of the 1970s. Andrea Rottmann explores how certain spaces – including homes, bars, streets, parks, and prisons – facilitated and restricted queer lives in the overwhelmingly conservative climate that characterized both German postwar states. With a theoretical toolkit informed by feminist, queer, and spatial theories, the book goes beyond previous histories that focus on state surveillance and the persecution of male homosexuality.

Book excerpt: The works in this catalogue, which include such well-known groups as Jokes and Car Hoods, illustrate the extraordinary variety of techniques and media Richard Prince uses to grapple with American myths in commercials and everyday culture. The strategies underlying the work, such as the serialisation, the sequencing and the repetition of constant and variable elements, is elaborated on by the American author Paul Black. While Kerstin Stakemeier examines the economic and political context of Prince's work in her contribution by means of selected examples, Yilmaz Dziewior explains the concept of the exhibition in Bregenz in 2014. The artist himself also has his say in the catalogue with an essay in which he formulates his artistic thinking in a most informative way.Large-format illustrations of early works and in particular the new pieces realised for Bregenz, as well as a carefully compiled biography and bibliography, offer a comprehensive insight into the American artist's work, which has influenced contemporary art for decades.English and German text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Lawrence's letters written between March 1927 and November 1928: almost 770 letters in just a year and nine months. The letters cover the period of Lawrence's Etruscan tour in the spring of 1927 as preparation for the writing of Sketches of Etruscan Places; the performance of his play, David, in London in May, and - above all - the writing, typing, private publication, promotion and immediate consequences of Lady Chatterley's Lover. He makes new acquaintances with writers and publishers in Europe (Max Mohr, Hans Carossa, Harry and Caresse Crosby); renews friendships which will stand him in good stead in times of poor health (the Huxleys, Aldington, the Brewsters); and rediscovers the bonds of family and old Eastwood friends. The volume provides annotation identifying persons and allusions, and includes a biographical introduction, illustrations, a full chronology and index.
