Book excerpt: "These essays (aphorisms, theses, whatever you like) were written fifteen years ago in Turkish, and were published in Turkey in 2007. It was almost an idyllic, Arcadian time if considered from the point of view of today, that is, the nightmarish year 2020 when I am writing this. Trump was still your run-of-the-mill Reality TV star (who was also a millionaire), and could harm only his immediate environment. We only had to deal with the common cold and the flu, which, although deadly enough, could not even begin to compete with the Covid-19 pandemic. Turkey, Russia and India were ruled by populists with authoritarian tendencies even then; but their rule did not seem as eternal and as aggressively autocratic, bordering on fascism, as it is today." * The original book was published in Turkish titled "Bir Şeyler Eksik" by Metis Publishers, Istanbul, 2007. This English version is translated and printed by permission from the publishers. What a joy! Bülent Somay’s new-old text, translated from the Turkish by Bülent himself, takes us into the impenetrable heart of obscure Lacanian psychoanalysis and comes out with clarity, wit and epithetical precision. Theory comes alive here; and along with the fun and games, something dark is brought into the light. - Stephen Frosh, author of Feelings, Psychoanalysis Outside the Clinic, Hauntings and Those Who Come After) With clarity, wit and copious erudition, Bülent Somay brings his critical psychoanalytic eye to our most challenging human relations – the tribulations of sex, love and desire. Somay’s committed sexual politics informs this essential addition to our knowledge of the pleasures and perils of the bonds of desire. Something is Missing is not to be missed. - Lynne Segal, author of Radical Happiness: Moments of Collective Joy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a book on psychoanalysis. It does not advance arguments and quotations from psychoanalytic theory to prove a point (or multiple points). Instead, it tries to offer clues as to how psychoanalysis might help us in everyday life, in understanding and, with any luck, in changing our lives. That's why one of the punctuation marks it uses the most is the question mark. Because its main argument is that psychoanalysis is not a technique of providing ready-made answers and/or solutions, but a method of asking questions, hopefully, the right ones, in our never-ending pursuit of 'Truth', which seems to have been disappearing from our conceptual horizon in the last few decades. "These essays (aphorisms, theses, whatever you like) were written fifteen years ago in Turkish, and were published in Turkey in 2007. Turkey, Russia and India were ruled by populists with authoritarian tendencies even then; but their rule did not seem as eternal and as aggressively autocratic, bordering on fascism, as it is today. We could still say, 'Capitalism will be capitalism!' and make plans and organise for its downfall and aftermath, rather than focus all our strength just to survive, as we are doing today. I was teaching in a decent enough university then, but now I am living in voluntary exile, just because I signed a petition for peace! Since then, the book was reprinted eight times in Turkish, with no changes made whatsoever, which was a thorn in my side, since the world was rapidly changing, maybe faster than ever, especially in the last five years. In translation, which I did myself, these essays were updated, 'upgraded', expanded and sometimes entirely rewritten, to retain whatever relevance they had, and also to keep up and develop with the times, although they were not related to the 'current affairs' per se, but seemingly mostly 'theoretical'."

Book excerpt: What seems to be happening throughout the last decade is the gradual invalidation and dissolution of what we used to call ‘Truth’, and hence the disruption and gradual dissolution of what Foucault had called the existing hierarchical “Regime of Truth”. What remains is not what Marx had hoped to be a more egalitarian regime in which “the educator{s themselves are also] educated”, but rather a ‘Humpty Dumpty Regime’, where ‘Truth’ is whatever the Humpty-Dumpty in power wants it to be. This book argues that this is an unmediated outcome of the profound social, cultural and economic crisis of neoliberal capitalism, and its political corollary, the meteoric rise of populism and authoritarianism, not only in the so-called ‘developing’ countries, but throughout the entire globe. CONTENTS PREFACE INTRODUCTION: AFTER NEOLIBERALISM, THE FLOOD? CHAPTER 1. ON RADICAL AMBIGUITY CHAPTER 2. THE MIDAS BLESSING: TURNING COMMODITIES INTO GIFTS CHAPTER 3. Book excerpt: From the leading psychoanalyst Adam Phillips comes Missing Out, a transformative book about the lives we wish we had and what they can teach us about who we are All of us lead two parallel lives: the one we are actively living, and the one we feel we should have had or might yet have. As hard as we try to exist in the moment, the unlived life is an inescapable presence, a shadow at our heels. And this itself can become the story of our lives: an elegy to unmet needs and sacrificed desires. We become haunted by the myth of our own potential, of what we have in ourselves to be or to do. And this can make of our lives a perpetual falling-short. But what happens if we remove the idea of failure from the equation? With his flair for graceful paradox, the acclaimed psychoanalyst Adam Phillips suggests that if we accept frustration as a way of outlining what we really want, satisfaction suddenly becomes possible. To crave a life without frustration is to crave a life without the potential to identify and accomplish our desires. In this elegant, compassionate, and absorbing book, Phillips draws deeply on his own clinical experience as well as on the works of Shakespeare and Freud, of D. W. Winnicott and William James, to suggest that frustration, not getting it, and and getting away with it are all chapters in our unlived lives—and may be essential to the one fully lived.

Book excerpt: Real Sex Films explores one of the most controversial movements in international cinema through an innovative interdisciplinary combination of theories of globalization and embodiment. Risk sociology, feminist film theory, and critical feminist mapping theory are brought together with concepts of production, narrative, genre, authorship, stardom, spectatorship, and social audience as several lenses of understanding and extension in ways of seeing real-sex cinema. Notions of personal subjectivity and critical distance, disciplinary co-operation and critique, and cinematic perceptions of the utopia and dystopia of love within risk modernity are the tensions exposed reflexively and in parallel, as each chapter focuses different lenses communicating intimacy, desire, risk and transgression. This book substantively, methodologically, and theoretically embraces and engages in its consideration of the images, ethics, double standards, and embodiments of brutal cinema. Crossing the boundaries of film studies, media and cultural studies, the ethnographic turn, risk sociology, feminist psychoanalytical, and geopolitical studies, this is a book for students, academics, as well as general and professional audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in King Arthurs Britain, medieval Japan and modern Atlanta, Holy Grail, Holy Grail: Quest East, Quest West is a rich blend of fantasy-adventure, historical-romance and swords and sorcery--a transformative myth for our times. Suppose all the legends of the Holy Grail were smoke screens to draw attention from the Grails real meaning. Suppose its message of male and female reconciliation could only be grasped by our own age. Not only that, but suppose the true Grail was lost not in Glastonbury, not in Avalon, but in the East; and its recovery required the interaction of Merlin's magic, Japanese shamans, and warriors trained in Sun Tzu's Art of War. Youve heard only Galahad was pure enough to see the Grail? Nonsense! Only Lancelot--near forty, still guilt-ridden over his affair with Guenevere--has the gut-wrenching need for redemption. Diamonds are created under enormous pressure over eonsso are shamans! Where is this true Grail anyway? Through a series of accidents, it has traveled from the Holy Land, over the Silk Road, through China, across the Sea of Japan, to become one of the sacred treasures of 5th Century Yamato (Japan). Accompanied by his page, Wee Willie, Lance is transported by Merlin to the ancient kingdom of pomp, magic and barbarism. A Japanese shaman-warrior agrees to help Lance capture the Grail if Lance will help him adjust the course of history. Lance and Willie are enmeshed in the assassination of the giggling, sadistic boy-Emperor. The only escape is through time. The two travelers are reconfigured in the Golden Age of 10th century Japan, where Lance falls passionately in love with Sagami. He would linger in this idyll, listening to the rustle of Sagamis silk kimonosbut Hes blinded by the Blue Man--the assassinated boy-Emperors time-traveling angel of death. Through the shamans magic, Lance and Willie are transported again to the last days of Heian Japan, a time of warrior-shoguns. Two great families squeeze the nation in a vise. Willie, now a handsome, young man in his twenties, distinguishes himself in love and war, changing the outcome of a famous battle. The debt to the shaman should be paid Buthistory has other plans. Or at least the Kami do. Spirit-beings who inhabit the winds; sparks of good and evil that fire the forge in the shaman's workshop, the Kami shape history in ways even the shaman cannot comprehend. Blind, maddened with fury, pain and shame, Lance is transported again--to modern Atlanta. It's springtime, the dogwoods are blooming, and the world is about to plunge into a millennial orgy of madness and self-destruction. Only Lance can save civilization. The problem is, Lance is now a homeless, hopeless amnesiac working as a mud-wrestler at the Renaissance Fair; and, the Blue Man, now transformed into a Yakuza thug, is obsessed with killing him. Nubile, clueless, vulnerable Lorrie latches onto Lance, drags him to a public session of life-regressionists, and--poof--epiphany!--our hero recalls his quest. A charismatic, leviathan-buttocked TV hostess helps; a mysterious black quilting lady helps. Digesting the lessons of 2000 years of Western and Eastern thought, only Lance can get the spiritual chiropractic just right. Only a climactic battle between good and evil magic can restore the balance of the world. Only the one who masters the Self can possess the wisdom of the Grail.
