Book excerpt: From a box of old letters and memorabilia, Miriam Moran constructs the remarkable life of her mother, an American missionary in war-torn China who died before her children could remember her. Grace Liddell Cox was a strong-minded farm girl from Iowa who early dedicated herself to the spread of the gospel in China. A civil war was underway when she arrived, and war with Japan was brewing. Yet, with a steady trust in her heavenly Father, she made the long journey to her post in Yunnan province, crisscrossing the country again in her faithful service with the China Inland Mission. Her letters home detail her experiences with the people she came to love, her interactions with fellow missionaries, her own marriage and children, her harrowing escape from the Japanese army, and her undiminished confidence in God in each new circumstance. Someone to Be with Roxie shares the fascinating life story of a young missionary who gave her life to God for service in China, and found him entirely worthy of her trust.

Book excerpt: Grace Woodbridge Roys suffered from bi-polar disease before it was well understood. Her daughter feared that her children would also suffer mental illness. This annotation of Grace's diary opens the early 1900s missionary world in China and the personality of Grace to the reader. In December 1910 Grace married Harvey Curtis Roys, who was teaching physics at Kiang Nan government school in Nanking, under the sponsorship of the YMCA. Grace had had a mental breakdown weeks earlier when her missionary father forbade the marriage. The diary records their early married life, the births of their first two children, their social life with other missionaries in China, many of whom made major contributions to Nanking life and education: medical doctors and nurses, theology professors, agricultural innovators, and founders of universities, hospitals, nursing schools, and schools for young Chinese women and men. Included is their experience evacuating during the Sun Yat-sen Revolution of 1911. Well-known missionaries of that time came to tea and taught at the Hillcrest School that the mothers began for foreign children. The Nanyang Exposition took place in 1910, too, as China was in the throes of entering the modern era, with trains, electricity, telegraphs, and a new interest in democracy.

I have followed what she has done for her husband and her family and it has humbled me.' Jürgen Klopp, from the foreword. Life as we know it can change in an instant, in the blink of an eye, and it did for Martina Cox and her family in 2018. On an ordinary day in April that year, Seán Cox travelled to Anfield to watch his beloved Liverpool FC play. But he never made it to the match. A vicious, unprovoked attack left him with a severe brain injury, unable to walk or talk. Here, Martina tells their remarkable story. It is a story of inner strength and determination, of dedication and commitment. By not taking no for an answer, and with the help of their family, their community, the Liverpool spirit and tens of thousands of people across the world who were touched by Seán's story, they have achieved what was thought impossible. With Hope in Your Heart brings Seán's story up to the present day. At its heart, this is a love story – the kind of love that conquers all.

As she watched her fellow missionaries fall to disease and exhaustion, she became just as dedicated to educating Christians about the often preventable tragedies of missionary life as she was to educating Chinese people about the Christian life. Today, an annual missionary offering taken in her name continues to enable countless others to give their all for the gospel.

Excerpt: ...over them; this continued all the week. It was a heartbreaking week. The native Christians came in from all the country round, many of them walking ten and twenty miles; they all went into the study to see the life-size portrait of Mr. Stott, and at the sight burst into tears. You have no idea how they love and honour Mrs. Stott, and they are a nice lot of people too; you can see they are Christians by their faces." Two days after our arrival, Mr. and Mrs. G. left for their own station, Bing-yie, about thirty-three miles south of us. Carpenters and bricklayers had soon to be called in, to repair the damage done by white ants, as part of the floors were quite eaten through, and the house needed to be cleaned throughout; but in three weeks we were in order again. The Christians were all eager for me to visit them, so beginning with the nearest places first, I went to a village seven miles distant from the city, to the house of a man who had been for years the only Christian in that place. My delight was great to find ten converts now, and nearly as many inquirers. After supper, twenty persons with Testaments and hymn-books gathered for evening service. I spoke from John iii., "God's love," and was followed by two of the converts, who gave such addresses as showed how they had grown in grace. In that village there are now twenty disciples, and a Bible reading has been conducted by one of the young ladies every Thursday afternoon. It takes her two hours to go and the same time to return, but small amount of persecution, has had the joy of seeing his wife, and wife's mother, his four children, two it is labour well spent. This man who was at first and for years the only Christian, and who endured no sisters-in-law, and a...
