Download or read book Bibliography on Methods of Analyzing Bird Banding Data written by David Raymond Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is an effort to bring together references from various sources relating to methods that have application or at least historical interest and background in the analysis of bird banding experiments. Several papers reviewing methods or assumptions are included. Attention is focused on the estimation of population size and survival using some type of capture-recapture method. A number of papers dealing with methods of estimating band reporting rates, immigration and mean life span are also included. In the newer, more general birds (single-recapture experiments). Both types of experiment are merely sampling procedures and they have several basic similarities. The term recapture is descriptive of the general process of interest.

Book Synopsis Use of Banding Data in Migratory Game Bird Research and Management by : Aelred D. Geis
Download or read book Use of Banding Data in Migratory Game Bird Research and Management written by Aelred D. Geis and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of banding data in migratory game bird management. The procedures followed in analyzing these data and the assumptions made are also outlined. This information is desired not only to better understand and justify expensive banding programs, but also to provide guidance to those wishing to analyze banding data. This understanding is essential, not only to effectively use the resulting data, but also to make correct decisions in the field while banding. A realization of how banding data are used emphasizes the importance of many details, such as the accurate age and sex determinations in the field and the correct reporting of this information on banding schedules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL) was established in 1920 after ratification of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act with the United Kingdom in 1918. During World War II, the BBL was moved from Washington, D.C., to what is now the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC). The BBL issues permits and bands to permittees to band birds, records bird band recoveries or encounters primarily through telephone and Internet reporting, and manages more than 72 million banding records and more than 4.5 million records of encounters using state-of-the-art technologies. Moreover, the BBL also issues bands and manages banding and encounter data for the Canadian Bird Banding Office (BBO). Each year approximately 1 million bands are shipped from the BBL to banders in the United States and Canada, and nearly 100,000 encounter reports are entered into the BBL systems. Banding data are essential for regulatory programs, especially migratory waterfowl harvest regulations.

Book excerpt: Short listed for the Green Earth book award In early April, as Owen and his sister search the hickories, oaks, and dogwoods for returning birds, a huge group of birds leaves the misty mountain slopes of the Yucatan peninsula for the 600-mile flight across the Gulf of Mexico to their summer nesting grounds. One of them is a Cerulean warbler. He will lose more than half his body weight even if the journey goes well. Aloft over the vast ocean, the birds encourage each other with squeaky chirps that say, “We are still alive. We can do this.” Owen’s family watches televised reports of a great storm over the Gulf of Mexico, fearing what it may mean for migrating songbirds. In alternating spreads, we wait and hope with Owen, then struggle through the storm with the warbler. This moving story with its hopeful ending appeals to us to preserve the things we love. The backmatter includes a North American bird migration map, birding information for kids, and guidance for how native plantings can transform yards into bird and wildlife habitat.
