Book excerpt: Some Rhyme, No Reason is a collection of poems that reflect my response(s) to life, in general. I was inspired to "collect" them by a member of the amazing group of poets to which I have the pleasure of belonging. These lovely people, Alyce, Barry, Carlos, Jazz, Oak, and Victoria, provide loving, gentle criticism and, more importantly, they keep me writing. Writing poetry keeps me sane and helps me "deal". In lieu of the great American novel, I give you "Some Rhyme" in hopes it might help you "deal" as well.

Book excerpt: I have found by giving events that are sad, worrisome or whimsical a second glance I could often give it a new look. Even find it a funny bone or give it a sense of humor. My writings have their own rhyme, rhythm and reason for being. An internal tide pushes the thoughts, then pulls...compelling again, drawing my pen to the paper. Just as the moon creates and ebb and a flow, words too wash back then forth tumbling and soaking the page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 29 April 1841, a week after his thirty-fourth birthday, Louis (Aloysius) Bertrand died of tuberculosis. This malady, his destitute poverty, and his errant existence qualify him as a quintessential poete maudit, whose one great work, Gaspard de la Nuit: Fantasies a la maniere de Rembrandt et de Callot, was not published until 1842. Now widely considered as the first collection of prose poems to appear in France, Gaspard inspired writers like Baudelaire, Mallarme, Huysmans, and Andre Breton. This study offers a rereading of Bertrand's book grounded in modern critical theory, including the work of Derrida, Bakhtin, Barbara Johnson, Genette, Lacoue-Labarthe, and Nancy. It elaborates a new perspective on a work that contains all the paradoxes of the genre, with which theorists still struggle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in the morning I can hardly see for the dew. If it weren't for God I would hardly think we would make it through. But I remembered—He never puts us in a place that is unsafe. He gives us plenty of light to show us the way. Even from a rose bush full of thorns we can behold the beauty of God's creation. At a baseball game we can learn the value of taking things one step at a time. When the rainfalls come, we can praise God for the blessings he showers upon us. No matter where we are in life, there are lessons to be learned and joy to be found. Shirley Ann Williams uses A Different Rhyme or Reason to muse about the creative nature of mankind and our innate desire to understand the world in which we live.

Self-help guru Shimoff presents three new ideas and a practical program to change the way readers look at creating happiness in their lives: 1. Happiness is not an emotion, a spike of elation or euphoria, but a lasting, neuro-physiological state of peace and well-being. 2. True happiness is not based on what people do or have--it doesn't depend on external reasons or circumstances. 3. Research indicates that everyone has a happiness set-point. No matter what happens to a person, they will tend to return to a set range of happiness. This book shows how you can actually reprogram your set-point to a higher level.--From publisher description.

Akasha has a marvelously devious plan to “save” mankind and destroy the vampire Lestat—in this extraordinarily sensual novel of the complex, erotic, electrifying world of the undead. Praise for The Queen of the Damned “Mesmerizing . . . a wonderful web of dark-side mythology.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Imaginative . . . intelligently written . . . This is popular fiction of the highest order.”—USA Today “A tour de force.”—The Boston Globe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because Catholic Theologians consciously fail to revise and rebuild the intellectual architecture of their faith -- and because they deliberately refuse to accommodate the discoveries of science over the 3000 years since their God was invented by a tribe of unenlightened shepherds and farmers, they are forced to maintain an inflexible policy of deliberate obscurantism. I use arguments from science (in layman's terms)- evolutionary biology, geology, archaeology, anthropology, particle physics, astronomy, and cosmology- to demonstrate the validity of this proposition. I have been a student (and victim) of Catholic Theology for more than 65 years. Over the last seven years (since my retirement) I have devoted nearly all of my time to learning and understanding the revelations of modem science - and to recognizing how incompatible they are with the infallible dogmas of the Pope and his minions. I have a Ph.D. in English, and I have completed 42 years of teaching on the college level. I am now Professor emeritus of English at Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts. My book is devoted to the questions which all peoples have tried to answer since the dawn of civilization: Where do we come from? Where are we going to? What are we here for? What the hell's it all about? The findings of modem neuroscience prove- with carloads of experimental and observational data -- that, without the material substrate of the brain, there can be no consciousness: that is, there can be no soul that survives the death of the body. The correlative point is that we now have empirical proof that God did not magically inject a supernatural soul into a single-celled zygote at the precise moment of its conception- because there is no such entity. Catholic Theologians cannot recognize the truth empirically demonstrated by modem neuroscience -- the fact that there is no such entity as a supernatural soul. Their only recourse is to maintain a policy of inflexible obscurantism - in plainer words, a ''theology of systematic prevarication.

The American Heritage® Dictionary of Idioms explores the meanings of idioms, including phrasal verbs such as kick back, proverbs such as too many cooks spoil the broth, interjections such as tough beans, and figures of speech such as elephant in the room. Since the publication of the first edition 15 years ago, author Christine Ammer has made extensive revisions that reflect new historical scholarship and changes in the English language. This second edition defines over 10,000 idiomatic expressions in greater detail than any other dictionary available today. English language learners will find this dictionary especially useful.
