Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Principles of Literary Criticism The following chapters were first prepared for the college lecture room, and, although since rewritten, they doubtless still betray by a certain dull, didactic manner the place of their origin. While directing the work of college classes, I had often looked about for a book that should give a compendious statement of the essentials of literature and the grounds of critical estimate. Finding no such book, I essayed to make one. Two or three books on the subject - born, I judge, of the same want that produced this one - have indeed appeared since these lectures were first written; but their purpose and method are quite different from those I have had in mind. I have attempted neither to expound a philosophy of criticism nor to elaborate a critical method; but simply to state, as plainly as I might, some qualities that by common consent are to be found in all writing deserving to be called literature, and to lay down some fundamental principles that must be assumed in all sound critical judgments. He enthused a generation of writers and readers and was an influential supporter of the young T.S. Eliot. Principles of Literary Criticism was the text that first established his reputation and pioneered the movement that became known as the 'New Criticism'. Highly controversial when first published, Principles of Literary Criticism remains a work which no one with a serious interest in literature can afford to ignore.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Criticism: An Introduction to the Study of Literature The purpose of this book is to present an account of the main principles of literary criticism, and to illustrate these principles by passages from great writers. The book will, therefore, be found to contain (in addition to the text) a collection of noteworthy critical utterances. The translations from the Greek, Germany and French have been done by the Author. References are made (with two exceptions) to the text of Aristotle by the pages of Immanuel Bekker's large (Berlin) edition; and to that of Plato, by the pages of the edition of Henry Stephens. Addison is cited by numbers of the Spectator, and Lessing by chapters of the Laocoon. In the case of other authors, the footnotes will sufficiently indicate the sources of reference. Both an index of authors and an index of subjects have been provided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Principles of Literary Criticism and Their Application to the Synoptic Problem Matt. And Mark agree against Luke in the placing of two sections in which the narrative is evidently threefold: The true kindred of Christ, recorded in Mark 3 31 - 35 and Matt. -50 immediately preceding the parables by the sea (mark - 34; Matt. 131 in Luke follows these parables; the imprisonment of John the Baptist, recorded in Mark 18 and Matt. 4 in connection with the results of the missionary journey of the Twelve, is given by Luke at the close of his account of the preaching of John, Luke 20. In the arrangement of paragraphs within a section Matt. And Mark agree against Luke in the account of the last supper and in the narrative of the trial. Besides these instances there are three in which Luke, though recording an event similar to that of Mark and Matt., evidently gives a wholly independent account unrelated in a literary way; and one in which Luke's account is, in the main at least, independent of Mark, and Matt. Is partly parallel to Mark, partly to Luke. These passages - Luke - 30; - 11; - 50 and - 32 - do not concern us at this point. Mark and Luke agree against Matt. In the location of thirteen sections, which lie between Matt. And Within these limits there are certain groups of two or three sections the sections of which succeed one another in the same order as in Mark and Luke, but the groups themselves are differently located. In respect to the narratives which precede and follow these limits, Matt. Agrees with Mark in the order of sections except in the transposition of the conversation between Jesus and his disciples con cerning the withered fig tree to a place in immediate connection with the cursing of the tree. But as Luke omits both of these sections, the transposition does not result in a disagreement of Matt. With both Mark and Luke. Matt. And Luke never agree against Mark in order of sections or paragraphs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetic Justice in the Drama: The History of an Ethical Principle in Literary Criticism Prominent among the subjects which must be thought of by any one who makes a study of the problem of poetic justice, is that which takes into consideration the aim and end of art. In order to accept or reject the dogma of rewards and punish ments in literature, one must carefully consider whether or not it is the aim and end of art to instruct. It was not necessary, however, that the writer should ofier any very specific and final answer to this large question. The doctrine of poetic justice has been understood in different ways by literary critics, and has been applied so rigorously by some writers, that the rejection of the doctrine does not necessarily imply a denial that instruction should be the chief aim of literary art. This much may be said as pointing towards an answer: on the one hand the gross violation of the principle of poetic justice, as ordinarily understood, is highly inartistic in its effect; and, on the other hand, absolute conformity to extreme form of poetic justice works against the best interests of art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Principles of Fiction Any general examination of the novelist's art must appear arid and theoretical. It cannot fail to be directed towards the more formal elements in that art, while criticism of individual novelists can deal more adequately with the life they are trying to create. A book of this sort is doomed to appear excessively schematic, and some people may object that profitable things can be said about this or that novel, but hardly about the Novel; for as Lawrence said: 'all rules of construction hold good only for novels that are copies of other novels'. That a great many things cannot be said in a book of this sort must be obvious to anyone who has ever given any thought to the novel. One can isolate for the purpose of analysis such an element as Plot, for instance but in many novels that do not lack unity, the principle of cohesion is something we cannot call Plot, something to which we cannot do justice except in individual studies of these books or of their authors. But though much must be left unsaid, something' can be said and a generalization may be useful even if it does not cover every instance. One of the purposes of such an examina tion is to help writers; and it is very difficult indeed to help writers except over formal problems. The only useful help many writers have ever given or received has been over small points such as punctuation, or the phrasing of a sentence. The present book deals with other aspects of the novel than those dealt with in my former treatise. It aspires only to an internal consistency. It is not a correction or a defence or amust sometimes mention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter second What Is Litebattjre? It was stated at the close of the previous chapter that the principles of criticism must be derived from a study of the literature itself; that a book is not literature because it conforms to certain rules, but rather that these rules are valid because they are drawn from admitted works of literature. Obviously, then, at the outset of our discussion, this question presents itself: What is the body of writings from which these rules and principles are drawn? What is literature? Moreover, if we can answer this question satisfactorily, we may find ourselves advanced some way in our discussion of these principles themselves. Since, if there be any discoverable essentials of literature as such, we shall be most likely to find all valuable critical principles, or laws, by considering carefully these essentials, their relative value, the conditions on which they depend, and the ways in which they are combined. But here we meet a difficulty which constantly recurs in critical discussion, --the difficulty of giving accurate definition to words in common use with a wide and vague significance. Such words as literature, as also, for other examples, beauty, poetry, imagination, idealism, are used by us all without any attempt to define for ourselves precisely what we mean by them. We find they designate accurately enough the most of the things associated with them in our thought, and we do not trouble ourselves if there be, so to speak, a ragged fringe on either side of the line of their meaning. It is only when we try to define such terms that we realize how vague and careless is our use of them. We find it difficult to make out with precision the limits of meaning we ourselves would assign to them; and when we..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature and Criticism The validity of this little book depends upon the belief that the character of a writer's whole achievement can only be felt and assessed by responding sensitively to the way in which he uses words, and that the capacity to make such a response can be formed or greatly enhanced by a training in literary criticism.
