Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin-American Universities and Special Schools In referring to universities I have consistently designated them by the name of the city in which they are located, although that is not always their official and corporate name. The ecclesiastical founda tions of colonial times uniformly bore the name of a saint: San Marcos, at Lima; San Felipe, at Santiago de Chile; San Francisco Xavier, at Sucre, etc. In very few cases have the old names remained. Some institutions have received the name of the country, as the Uni versity of Chile; others the name of the city, as University of Cor doba. In order to avoid confusion and to indicate clearly the location of the institutions I have applied to each the name of the city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin American Secondary Schools: Courses of Study The number of students coming from the Latin American countries to continue their studies in institutions of the United States has been increasing greatly during the last four years. With the purpose of facilitating the process of their admission to colleges or technical schools, the Section of Education of the Pan American Union has prepared this monograph. The aim has been to present in a concrete and clear manner the primary and second ary school preparation which these students have had in their respective countries. This is, therefore, a cross-section of the public. School systems of the Latin American republics, showing the place of secondary education in its relation to primary and higher education. The important facts presented under each country are: grades (or years) covered by primary school; secondary school course, specifying subjects, periods per week, length of recitation period, length of school year, and relation of the secondary school course to higher studies. Incidentally a few other facts, which may be of interest to the student of School Administration, have been added whenever it has been pos sible to obtain them; using the latest official data available. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Although in Latin America there are no educational programs specialized in comparative education, as there are in some European, Oriental and North American universities, there are scholars who cultivate this field. With the production of this book, the authors -most of them affiliated to member organizations of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies- are walking towards a Latin American network of researchers with an interest in establishing a dialogue with non-Spanish speaking colleagues from the rest of the world. This is the reason of our effort in writing most of the chapters in English. Comparative education, as all disciplinary fields, has evolved with different ways of thinking, approaching and constructing its objects of research and analysis, which are nurtured by different epistemological traditions living together in our times, enriching and bringing complexities. From Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica and Mexico, the authors of the book pose questions, historical descriptions, reflections, discussions and cases to set forth their views.
