Download or read book Introduction to Wood and Natural Fiber Composites written by Douglas D. Stokke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a shift in research and industrial practice, and products traditionally manufactured primarily from wood are increasingly combined with other nonwood materials of either natural or synthetic origin. Wood and other plant-based fiber is routinely combined with adhesives, polymers, and other "ingredients" to produce composite materials. Introduction to Wood and Natural Fiber Composites draws together widely scattered information concerning fundamental concepts and technical applications, essential to the manufacture of wood and natural fiber composites. The topics addressed include basic information on the chemical and physical composition of wood and other lignocellulosic materials, the behavior of these materials under thermocompression processes, fundamentals of adhesion, specific adhesive systems used to manufacture composite materials, and an overview of the industrial technologies used to manufacture major product categories. The book concludes with a chapter on the burgeoning field of natural fiber-plastic composites. Introduction to Wood and Natural Fiber Composites is a valuable resource for upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students studying forest products and wood science, as well as for practicing professionals working in operational areas of wood- and natural-fiber processing. For more information on the Wiley Series in Renewable Resources, visit www.wiley.com/go/rrs Topics covered include: Overview of lignocellulosic material, their chemical and physical composition Consolidation behavior of wood and fiber in response to heat and pressure Fundamentals of adhesion Adhesives used to bond wood and lignocellulosic composites Manufacturing technology of major product types Fiber/plastic composites
Book Synopsis Structure and Properties of Wood-Polymer Composites (WPC) by : Alexander Askadskii
Download or read book Structure and Properties of Wood-Polymer Composites (WPC) written by Alexander Askadskii and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, the use of polymer composites filled with wood (WPC) is becoming increasingly popular. In particular, flooring of terraced premises, siding, decorative fences, fence systems, steps, universal profiles, among others are made from WPC. In 1977, the first enterprise for the production of WPC appeared in Sweden. The first experience was not very successful – the demand turned out to be low, and the wear of technological equipment was very high. Therefore, developments in this field were resumed only in the 1990s and continue to this day. This book describes the basic physical and mechanical properties of modern WPC, such as tensile and compression strength, and hardness. Also, the influence of climatic factors on the performance properties of products from WPC is described, while the thermal and rheological properties of WPC materials are considered, which directly affect the consumer characteristics of the products. The book contains theoretical developments related to the prediction of the mechanical and thermal properties of polymers and composites. The Van der Waals volume and the energy of the intermolecular interaction are estimated. This book will be of interest to representatives of the WPC market, designers, and architects, as well as technology engineers, students and post-graduate students of higher educational institutions in the fields of chemistry and physics of composite polymer materials.

Book Synopsis Adhesion in Cellulosic and Wood-Based Composites by : John F. Oliver
Download or read book Adhesion in Cellulosic and Wood-Based Composites written by John F. Oliver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellulose is a versatile and renewable natural resource which has attracted increasing attention in the last decade, expecially after the energy crisis of 1973. Apart from its extensive use as asolid product, wood is the most important source of cellulose fibres for papermaking and is also widely used as a source of energy. The form and availability ot· the forest provides a great opportunity for technological improvement and innovation in the future to satisfy the foreseeable increasing demand for wood based products. For example, North American sawmills and plywood mills presently recover only about 45 to 55% of logged wood while the remainder is disposed as waste, if it is not used in pulp manufacturing. In addition, top and branch wood, and logs from non-commercial species which are presently not recovered from the logging sites could provide an abundant and relatively inexpensive resource for the manufacture of composite products. Other valuable potential sour ces of cellulosic materials are waste paper and agricultural waste. A composite is the consolidation of two polymerie materials such that one of the components acts as the adhesive binder while the other forms the substrate matrix. In some cases, the matrix and the adhesive may be the same materials. To maximize the adhesion potential of the composite, the properties of the substrate which can enhance, hinder or complicate the development of optimum adhesion should be thoroughly explored and identified.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites, Second Edition by : Roger M. Rowell
Download or read book Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites, Second Edition written by Roger M. Rowell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood has played a major role throughout human history. Strong and versatile, the earliest humans used wood to make shelters, cook food, construct tools, build boats, and make weapons. Recently, scientists, politicians, and economists have renewed their interest in wood because of its unique properties, aesthetics, availability, abundance, and perhaps most important of all, its renewability. However, wood will not reach its highest use potential until we fully describe it, understand the mechanisms that control its performance properties, and, finally, are able to manipulate those properties to give us the desired performance we seek. The Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites analyzes the chemical composition and physical properties of wood cellulose and its response to natural processes of degradation. It describes safe and effective chemical modifications to strengthen wood against biological, chemical, and mechanical degradation without using toxic, leachable, or corrosive chemicals. Expert researchers provide insightful analyses of the types of chemical modifications applied to polymer cell walls in wood. They emphasize the mechanisms of reaction involved and resulting changes in performance properties including modifications that increase water repellency, fire retardancy, and resistance to ultraviolet light, heat, moisture, mold, and other biological organisms. The text also explores modifications that increase mechanical strength, such as lumen fill, monomer polymer penetration, and plasticization. The Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites concludes with the latest applications, such as adhesives, geotextiles, and sorbents, and future trends in the use of wood-based composites in terms of sustainable agriculture, biodegradability and recycling, and economics. Incorporating decades of teaching experience, the editor of this handbook is well-attuned to educational demands as well as industry standards and research trends.
