The writer does not claim to have been exhaustive in his account of the various theatres set forth, but has rather aimed at reproducing - to the best of his power - the more interesting and important features of their history, whilst, at the same time, connecting these with general facts and data. Beyond the period of his own recollection he has endeavoured to verify every incident, great and small, by the most careful and diligent research; and should the book succeed in winning the approbation of the playgoing public, he hopes, at some future time, to offer another volume for their acceptance. Halliwell-phillipps, whose life-long labours in Shakespearean and Elizabethan literature made his Opinion of the greatest importance, was struck with my attempt, in the pages of the Antiquary, to cast the story of the Shakespeare stage into a narrative of the playhouses; and he urged me to bring my work to completion in a book on the subject. The present volume represents the first half of the fulfilment of a promise which I made to him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chronicle History of the London Stage 1559-1642 Amid the multitudinous babbling tongues, Whose plaudits smirch our elder makers' fame, One voice clear-ringing gives due laud or blame To each, in turn, where laud or blame belongs. Not his, to wound with unincited wrongs: Nor his, men's trivial errors to proclaim: His, the true mean: wise, thoughtful, still the same, High raised o'er nameless, rankless, critic throngs. From him, whose heart-warm and unsought-for praise Has cheered me through my long and difficult task, Now, while I lay it finisht at his feet, A calm, considerate doom I dare to ask: But for him from the world I claim, as meet, A full, triumphant, kingly crown of bays. During the season of 1751-2, Upton was seen in New York with the referred to company of comedians, and appeared as star in a number of Shakespearian plays, opening in Othello and offering Richard Provoked Husband, Venice Pre served, Lethe and Miller of Mansfield. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Haymarket Theatre: Some Records Reminiscences WE have given this book the sub-title of Some Records and Reminiscences for the very. Excellent reason that it exactly describes it. No attempt has been made to write a serious history, and we have only tried to deal with those periods of the theatre's life that are, in our opinion, interesting or entertaining. If our sins of commission are many, our sins of omission are of far greater number, but in the latter case we have sinned with intention. Our debts to authors past and present, and to almost numberless friends, are far too heavy to be repaid by a mere prefatory recital of their names. We would simply beg the reader believe that with out them we could never have put pen to paper, an undoubted fact which will go far to prove the gratitude we feel so strongly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Act Plays The one-act play is a new form of the drama and more emphatically a new form of literature. Its possibilities began to attract the attention of European and American writers in the last decade of the nineteenth century, those years when so many dramatic traditions lapsed and so many precedents were established. It is significant that the Oldest play in the present collection is Maeterlinck's The Intruder, published in 1890. The history of this new form is of necessity brief. Before its vogue became general, one-act plays were being presented 'in vaudeville houses in this country and were being used as curtain raisers in London theatres for the purpose of marking time until the late-dining audiences should arrive. With the exception of the famous Grand Guignol Theatre in Paris, where the entertainment for an evening might consist of sev eral one-act plays, all of the hair-raising, blood-curdling variety, programs composed entirely of one-act plays were rare. Sir James Matthew Barrie is usually credited with being the first in England to write one-act plays intended to be grouped in a single production. A program of this character has been un common in the commercial theatre in America, but three of Barrie's one-act plays, constituting a single program, have met with enthusiastic response from American audiences. There are two new developments in the history of the theatre that have encouraged and promoted the writing of one act plays: the one is the Repertory Theatre abroad and the other is the Little Theatre movement on both sides of the At lantic. The repertory of the Irish Players, for example, is composed largely of one-act plays, and American Little Theatres are given over almost exclusively to the one-act play.
