Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Imagist Poets, 1916: An Anthology IN bringing the second volume of Some Imagirt Poet: before the public, the authors wish to express their gratitude for the interest which the 19 I 5 volume aroused. The discus sion Of it was widespread, and even those critics out Of sym/ pathy with Imagist tenets accorded it much space. In the Preface to that book, we endeavoured to present those ten/ ets in a succinct form. But the very brevity we employed has lead to a great deal of misunderstanding. We have def cided, therefore, to explain the laws which govern us a little more fiilly. A few people may understand, and the rest can merely misunderstand again, a result to which we are quite accustomed. Book Synopsis The Rise of Gospel Blues by : Michael W. Harris
Download or read book The Rise of Gospel Blues written by Michael W. Harris and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-06-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most observers believe that gospel music has been sung in African-American churches since their organization in the late 1800s. Yet nothing could be further from the truth, as Michael W. Harris's history of gospel blues reveals. Tracing the rise of gospel blues as seen through the career of its founding figure, Thomas Andrew Dorsey, Harris tells the story of the most prominent person in the advent of gospel blues. Also known as "Georgia Tom," Dorsey had considerable success in the 1920s as a pianist, composer, and arranger for prominent blues singes including Ma Rainey. In the 1930s he became involved in Chicago's African-American, old-line Protestant churches, where his background in the blues greatly influenced his composing and singing. Following much controversy during the 1930s and the eventual overwhelming response that Dorsey's new form of music received, the gospel blues became a major force in African-American churches and religion. His more than 400 gospel songs and recent Grammy Award indicate that he is still today the most prolific composer/publisher in the movement. Delving into the life of the central figure of gospel blues, Harris illuminates not only the evolution of this popular musical form, but also the thought and social forces that forged the culture in which this music was shaped.

Book Synopsis Richard Aldington by : Norman T. Gates
Download or read book Richard Aldington written by Norman T. Gates and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the most comprehensive selection of his letters ever published, Norman Gates allows Richard Aldington to tell the story of his life in his own words. Unlike Aldington's autobiography, Life for Life's Sake, published twenty years before his death, these letters include those two important decades of his life and do not depend upon memory. Gates provides an introduction to each of the book's five sections, sketching Aldington's biography during that decade, but the reader may then listen to Aldington's own voice speaking through his letters. Richard Aldington was married to the American poet H. D. and was a friend to many other writers and artists at the center of the Modern period. His comments on his colleagues and their work, his efforts to promote their literary fortunes, his passionate love for two wives and two mistresses, are all a part of these letters. So, too, are his experiences on the editorial staffs of the Egoist and the Criterion, which brought him to touch with European and American writers. For a clear picture of the literary world of this time, Aldington's letters are indispensable.
