Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1950s, a number of specialized books dealing with human factors has been published, but very little in aviation. Human Factors in Aviation is the first comprehensive review of contemporary applications of human factors research to aviation. A "must" for aviation professionals, equipment and systems designers, pilots, and managers--with emphasis on definition and solution of specific problems. General areas of human cognition and perception, systems theory, and safety are approached through specific topics in aviation--behavioral analysis of pilot performance, cockpit automation, advancing display and control technology, and training methods.

Book excerpt: The advent of very compact, very powerful digital computers has made it possible to automate a great many processes that formerly required large, complex machinery. Digital computers have made possible revolutionary changes in industry, commerce, and transportation. This book, an expansion and revision of the author's earlier technical papers on this subject, describes the development of automation in aircraft and in the aviation system, its likely evolution in the future, and the effects that these technologies have had -- and will have -- on the human operators and managers of the system. It suggests concepts that may be able to enhance human-machine relationships in future systems. The author focuses on the ability of human operators to work cooperatively with the constellation of machines they command and control, because it is the interactions among these system elements that result in the system's success or failure, whether in aviation or elsewhere. Aviation automation has provided great social and technological benefits, but these benefits have not come without cost. In recent years, new problems in aircraft have emerged due to failures in the human-machine relationship. These incidents and accidents have motivated this inquiry into aviation automation. Similar problems in the air traffic management system are predicted as it becomes more fully automated. In particular, incidents and accidents have occurred which suggest that the principle problems with today's aviation automation are associated with its complexity, coupling, autonomy, and opacity. These problems are not unique to aviation; they exist in other highly dynamic domains as well. The author suggests that a different approach to automation -- called "human-centered automation" -- offers potential benefits for system performance by enabling a more cooperative human-machine relationship in the control and management of aircraft and air traffic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) was held ten years ago in Montreal (ITS ’88). It was so well received by the international community that the organizers decided to do it again in Montreal four years later, in 1992, and then again in 1996. ITS ’98 differs from the previous ones in that this is the first time the conference has been held outside of Montreal, and it’s only been two years (not four) since the last one. One interesting aspect of the ITS conferences is that they are not explicitly bound to some organization (e.g., IEEE or AACE). Rather, the founder of these conferences, Claude Frasson, started them as a means to congregate researchers actively involved in the ITS field and provide a forum for presentation and debate of the most currently challenging issues. Thus the unifying theme is science. This year’s “hot topics” differ from those in the earlier ITS conferences as they reflect ever changing trends in ITS research. A few of the issues being examined at ITS ’98 include: Web based tutoring systems, deploying ITS in the real world, tutoring and authoring tools, architectures, and knowledge structure and representation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every issue of Ashgate's Human Factors and Aerospace Safety: An International Journal publishes an invited, critical review of a key area from a widely-respected researcher. To celebrate a successful first three years of the journal and to make these papers available to a wider audience, they have been collated here into a single volume. The book is divided into three sections, with articles addressing safety issues in flight deck design, aviation operations and training, and air traffic management. These articles describe the state of current research within a practical context and present a potential future research agenda. Contemporary Issues in Human Factors and Aviation Safety will appeal to both professionals and researchers in aviation and associated industries who are interested in learning more about current issues in flight safety.

This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book departs from the assumption that Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems will provide a maximum advantage by replacing human cognitive processing. Instead, this book subscribes to the assumption that AI systems will provide a maximal advantage when the system is specifically designed to augment human intelligence. It provides methods for designing effective systems that include one or more humans and one or more AI entities and uses the approach that assumes automation does not replace human activity but fundamentally changes the structure of human work when AI is added to existing systems. Integrating Artificial and Human Intelligence through Agent Oriented Systems Design discusses the potential impact of AI on human work and life and explores why teamwork is necessary today for complex work environments. The book explains the processes and methods humans employ to effectively team with one another and presents the elements of artificial agents that permit them to function as team members in joint human and artificial teams. It discusses design goals and illustrates how the methods that have been used to model the complex interactions among human and artificial agents can be expanded to enable the design of interaction between them to make possible the attainment of the shared goals. Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools that provide logical designs of human–agent teams, the AI within these teams, training to be deployed for human and artificial agent team members, and the interfaces between human and artificial agent team members are all covered. MBSE files containing profiles and examples for building MBSE models used in the design approach are featured on the author’s website (https://lodesterresci.com/hat). This book is an ideal read for students, professors, engineers, and project managers associated with designing and developing AI systems or systems that seek to incorporate AI.
