Book excerpt: The equations of motion and total enthalpy are derived for a compressible turbulent boundary layer on an axisymmetric or two-dimensional surface with non-negligible longitudinal curvature. From these equations are derived the integral-momentum, kinetic-energy, and total-enthalpy equations for non-negligible longitudinal curvature. Calculations indicate that if concave curvature increases the skin friction sufficiently separation is delayed although the boundary layer is thickened. Also, an increase in curvature in the direction in which the surface pressure rises acts to hasten separation for concave curvature and delay it for convex curvature. (Author).

Some, but not all previous studies suggest that a large-scale, stationary array of counter-rotating vortices exists within the turbulent boundary layer on a concave wall. The objective of the present study was to obtain a qualitative model of the flow field in order to increase our understanding of the underlying physics. A large free-surface water channel was constructed in order to perform a visual study of the flow. Streamwise components of mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured using a hot film anemometer. The upstream boundary was spanwise uniform with a momentum thickness to radius of curvature of 0.05. Compared to flat wall flow, large-scale, randomly distributed sweeps and ejections were seen in the boundary layer on the concave wall. The sweeps appear to suppress the normal mechanism for turbulence production near the wall by inhibiting the bursting process. The ejections appear to enhance turbulence production in the outer layers as the low speed fluid convected from regions near the wall interacts with the higher speed fluid farther out. The large-scale structures did not occur at fixed spanwise locations, and could not be called roll cells or vortices. (Author).

Book excerpt: Use is made of self similarity approach and integral momentum technique to obtain solutions of Van Dyke's second-order boundary-layer equations for laminar incompressible flow. Accurate numerical solutions of the most general self similar equations are tabulated for the four second-order contributions due to vorticity interaction, displacement speed, longitudinal curvature, and transverse curvature. A limited number of closed form solutions are obtained which appear to have special significance at the point of first-order boundary-layer separation. In particular it is found that the displacement speed problem can proceed up to separation for only two values of the second-order pressure gradient. All other cases display an infinite discontinuity at this point. Numerical solutions of a large number of cases for the longitudinal and transverse curvature effects well support an identical conclusion. The integral momentum technique applied (a straight forward extension of the Karmen-Pohlhausen solutions) is found to be oversensitive to approximations and in the final analysis is rejected in favor of locally similar solutions. They were obtained by numerical solution of a generalized Falkner-Skan equation governing similar solutions for flows over curved surfaces. The curvature parameter is essentially the inverse square root of the Reynolds number based on free stream conditions and a characteristic radius of curvature. The results indicate that, for equal flow conditions, boundary layer thickness is greater for flows with convex surface curvature than for those with concave curvature. An important influence of curvature on the velocity profile occurs near the outer edge of the boundary layer where, due to the pressure gradient normal to the surface, the gradient of the velocity component parallel to the surface, in a direction normal to the surface, is negative for convex and positive for concave surfaces in contrast to its value of zero for flows where the curvature correction is neglected. Book excerpt: The objective of this work has been to develop a direct numerical simulation capability for compressible, non-canonical wall-bounded flows which is directly applicable to actual flight vehicles. Data from the simulations is used to educe information about the organized motion. In the flow and bow they are affected by the extra strain rates due to concave wall curvature. A second-order finite volume approach and both fourth-order and sixth-order compact differences are available for the spatial derivatives. The algorithm allows for generalized coordinates so that simulations about complex geometries can be performed. Extensive testing was done for two subgrid-scale models, the compressible Smagoriusky and structure function models, for a supersonic boundary layer. As the subgrid-scale viscosity also behaves as an artificial viscosity for central differencing codes, the study reinforced the need for high-order dissipation models in the simulation code. Validation of the numerical method was performed for flow over a concave surface for subsonic flow in which streamwise vortices develop in the boundary-layer due to the Gortler instability. The geometry and flow conditions closely approximated the incompressible experiments of Swearingen and Blackwelder. The simulations captured the essential features of the experiments in which counter-rotating vortices developed near the wall. As these streamwise vortices develop, the laminar boundary layer on the concave wall rapidly becomes three-dimensional. Higher-momentum fluid is pulled towards the wall from the outer flow as vortices grow downstream. The low-speed fluid lying between the vortices induces low-momentum fluid away from the wall, leading to inflectional streamwise velocity profiles, in good agreement with the experiments. (AN).
