Book excerpt: Post-secondary education, often referred to as "the new buffalo," is a contentious but critically important issue for First Nations and the future of Canadian society. While First Nations maintain that access to and funding for higher education is an Aboriginal and Treaty right, the Canadian government insists that post-secondary education is a social program for which they have limited responsibility. In "The New Buffalo, "Blair Stonechild traces the history of Aboriginal post-secondary education policy from its earliest beginnings as a government tool for assimilation and cultural suppression to its development as means of Aboriginal self-determination and self-government. With first-hand knowledge and personal experience of the Aboriginal education system, Stonechild goes beyond merely analyzing statistics and policy doctrine to reveal the shocking disparity between Aboriginal and Canadian access to education, the continued dominance of non-Aboriginals over program development, and the ongoing struggle for recognition of First Nations run institutions.

Book excerpt: Economics is taught in some form in the secondary schools of nations throughout the world. The subject is rarely taught in elementary schools, and while economics courses are offered in universities, the majority of students end their formal education with secondary school. Thus, the best opportunity for the economic education of the youth of a nation occurs in secondary schools. This book examines economic education at this critical level of the educational system. The teaching of economics in secondary schools varies across countries. These differences occur because of history, the structure of education, and other national factors. At the same time, there are common elements in the economic education of many countries, especially in content coverage. This contrast between the common features and the uniqueness of economic education in secondary schools of major industrial nations exemplifies the international perspective presented in this book. The international perspective is developed in the six sections of the volume. The first section discusses why nations should include economics in school curricula, and presents a framework for teaching economics that should have global appeal. Dissension and consensus on economic issues among North American and European economists are examined in the second section. The third section surveys the U.S. research literature on precollege economic education and assesses the current state of economics instruction in U.S. schools. The economics curricula and educational practices in seven other nations -- the U.K., Canada, Japan, Germany, Austria, Korea, and Australia -- are described in the fourth and fifth sections. The fifth section also presents international comparisons of economic understanding based on national testing in six of those nations. The sixth and final section explores the role of economic education in centrally planned economies, and its effects on the transition to a market economy, using Russia, Bulgaria, and China as case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In communications, health care, and economics, events, discoveries, and decisions that originate beyond national borders today routinely influence national policies and practices. But how are our system of education, and particularly our universities, affected by globalization? A New World of Knowledge examines how globalization has obliged universities in Canada to reassess and rethink the international dimension of their mission and practice. All now include an international dimension in their mission statement. Is this a true statement of educational principles? Or is it simply a marketing message intended to position the university to cope with budget reductions through the sale of educational services? A New World of Knowledge looks at the important role that Canadian universities have played in shaping Canada's response to the problems of international development. It provides the historical backdrop and level of analysis needed to properly inform choices for the future of higher education in Canada and abroad. The book will interest teachers and administrators in institutions of higher education, especially in international affairs and educational studies; practitioners in organizations that depend on university linkages (such as in NGOs and research-granting organizations); government officials in the education sector; and students looking for an international education.

Book excerpt: Education and training in Canada are currently under intense scrutiny. The reasons behind the rapidly-mounting debate include contextual factors such as globalization, technological change, trade liberalization, demographic shifts, fiscal restraint, and privatization. The implications of these factors have become a major public policy issue. This report contributes to the debate by reporting empirical research on major aspects of education and training, and evaluates the Canadian education system critically as to its past performance and future prospects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the economic issues of education from an unusually systematic and broad perspective. Although the book is soundly based in economic theory, it is not heavily mathematical. Economic Dimensions in Education is designed to provide an introductory analysis of economic issues in education both in academic life and in the general community. Some of the issues discussed include the nature and reasons for public sector activity in education, the role education plays in providing skilled human resources for an economy, and the economic consequences of migration between countries of educated peoples. The book also deals with various aspects of demand: patterns of educational demand, individual demand for education as a form of social investment for the community, and supply aspects of education as related to types and sizes of educational establishments and problems of ensuring the efficient provision of education. There has been a growing interest in the economic aspects of education. The considerable growth in the volume of educational activity is now at the point where today education is one of the largest industries in most countries and also one of the chief employers of highly skilled personnel. The recognition that education may have a significant influence on the employment and income opportunities and hence affect the distribution of income and wealth in society is also a factor. A final reason stems from the post-war emphasis on economic growth and development, with education playing an important role as a provider of skilled personnel for an economy. This classic volume is comprehensive, clearly written, and will appeal to undergraduates and first-year graduate students. The treatment is firmly embedded in economic theory and is must reading for those professional economists concerned with education.
