Download or read book Durability of Concrete and Cement Composites written by Chris L. Page and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst most structures made using concrete and cement-based composites have not shown signs of premature degradation, there have been notable exceptions. In addition, there is increasing pressure for new structures to remain in serviceable condition for long periods with only minimal maintenance before being recycled. All these factors have highlighted the issues of what affects the durability of these materials in different circumstances and how material properties can be measured and improved. Durability of concrete and cement composites summarises key research on these important topics. After an introductory chapter, the book reviews the pore structure and chemistry of cement-based materials, providing the foundation for understanding the particular aspects of degradation which are discussed in the following chapters. These include dimensional stability and cracking processes, chemical and microbiological degradation of concrete, corrosion of reinforcing and prestressing steels, deterioration associated with certain aggregates, effects of frost and problems involving fibre-reinforced and polymer-cement composites. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Durability of concrete and cement composites is a standard reference for all those concerned with improving the service life of structures using these materials. Analyses a range of materials such as reinforced steel in concrete, pre-stressed concrete and cement composites Discusses key degradation phenomena such as cracking processes and the impact of cold weather conditions A standard reference for those concerned with improving the service life of structures using concrete and cement based composites

Book Synopsis Cement and Concrete Chemistry by : Wieslaw Kurdowski
Download or read book Cement and Concrete Chemistry written by Wieslaw Kurdowski and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes cement clinker formation. It covers multicomponent systems, clinker phase structures and their reactions with water, hydrate composition and structure, as well as their physical properties. The mineral additions to cement are described as are their influence on cement-paste properties. Special cements are also discussed. The microstructure of concrete is then presented, and special emphasis is given to the role of the interfacial transition zone, and the corrosion processes in the light of cement-phase composition, mineral additions and w/c ratio. The admixtures' role in modern concrete technology is described with an emphasis on superplasticizer chemistry and its cement-paste rheological modification mechanism. Cement with atypical properties, such as calcium aluminate, white, low energy and expansive cements are characterized. The last part of the book is devoted to special types of concrete such as self compacting and to reactive powders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strontium aluminate cement is special inorganic cement with the properties which make it favorable for various special applications such as refractory products, macro defect free (MDF) composites, blended cements and expansive cements for high temperature applications. There is an immense number of possible combinations which can be made to prepare blended and multicomponent cements and to investigate the influence of substitutions on the properties of strontium aluminate. Divided into ten sections, this book provides the latest research achievements in many aspects of this binder. The manufacturing, the hydration process, the setting behavior and the properties are described. The book contains many original and firstly published experimental research results obtained during writing. Currently there is no comprehensive work on this topic in literature. From this point of view, the book is a pilot work on this topic and should attract the attention of researchers and bring further progress of this topic.

Book Synopsis Electrical Resistivity and Temperature of Fresh Cement Paste as Indicators for Setting Time by : Ahmad Shahroodi
Download or read book Electrical Resistivity and Temperature of Fresh Cement Paste as Indicators for Setting Time written by Ahmad Shahroodi and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process, rate, and quality of cement hydration (a complex physical-chemical process) affect the properties development of concrete, such as its compressive strength, penetrability, and setting. Among all, setting time is one of the important properties for the concrete industry, as it is the factor in determining the consolidation, finishing, and curing time of a concrete pour. Inadequate determination of concrete setting time will result in improper finishing, formation of cold joints between layers of concrete, and curing time delay. Therefore, short- and long-term performance of concrete, concrete durability, and its life span will be affected. Concrete setting time proceeds from an initial stage (end of concrete pouring and consolidation) to a final stage (end of finishing process and beginning of curing) with the hydration of cement particles in the matrix of concrete. The accurate determination of the setting time in concrete projects has always been a question. Setting time is measured in laboratory setups by the traditional method of the Vicat needle (as standardized in ASTM C191). However, the field condition of a concrete pour is different from a lab set up, so the importance of replacing a lab-based setting time test with a field applicable method is out of question. This research project studies the feasibility of using a practical and non-destructive technique to detect the actual concrete setting time and its development in a reasonable amount of time. In this research, the electrical properties and internal temperature of cementing-based mixtures are monitored over the first 24 hours of hydration. The electrical properties of concrete and cement-based materials and corresponding internal temperature are influenced by many factors affected by cement hydration, similar to the setting time. The main goal of this research project is to establish a predicting method for the fresh cement paste setting time by monitoring either the electrical properties or the internal temperature of the mixture. To isolate the effect of the specimen geometry, electrical resistivity has been chosen as the electrical properties' representative in this study. It is measured by a novel resistivity-meter setup. However, to develop a time-saving and accurate method, microstructure factors affecting the electrical resistivity development of fresh cement paste need to be studied. These factors are (1) the ionic concentration and ionic variation in the pore solution (in the liquid phase of the cement paste microstructure), and (2) the hydration products formation and crystallization (or the physical characteristics of the cement paste microstructure). Since formation of hydration products and crystallization are exothermic, the changes in the internal temperature of the materials are also monitored. Finally, reliable predicting indicators, electrical resistivity and internal temperature values, which are influenced by not only the fresh stage ionic concentration, but also by the development and changes in the physical characteristics of microstructure are proposed to the industry.
