Book excerpt: A three-dimensional, triply nested tropical cyclone forecast model was initialized from hand-analyzed synoptic-scale wind data. The diagnostic phase forced the mass fields from the wind fields by use of a suitable balance equation. Latent heat parameterization and frictional dissipation were omitted from the model to study movement primarily due to advective processes. For comparison, a three-level uniform coarse mesh grid model was initialized with the same real data. Time averaging of the pressure gradient terms of the momentum equations was incorporated into each model in an attempt to increase the maximum time increment. Movement forecasts of Typhoon Irma to 48-hours with both dynamic models were compared with operational forecasts and the post-analysis 'best' track. Very satisfactory movement prognoses were obtained for the three periods forecasted with the dynamic models. The models correctly forecast the passage of a 500-mb trough to the north of the typhoon, apparently preventing recurvature. For movement forecasts, it appears that the nested model can be initialized with linear interpolation of data from the coarse grid to the finer mesh grids. The time increment was increased through use of the pressure averaging in the uniform CMG model; however, no time step increase was realized with the nested model due to lattice separation of the solution. Book excerpt: The Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) version of the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting (ARW) model with a moving 4-km nested grid is examined for 10 track and intensity predictions of six western North Pacific tropical cyclones during 2005. In three of the 10 integrations, the ARW vortex tracker algorithm based on the 500-mb height minimum failed to appropriately move the nest and thus lost track of the storm vortex. For the other seven cases, the ARW track forecasts are more skillful than the AFWA MM5 forecasts and (except at 12 h) the CLIPER-type forecasts. The ARW intensity forecasts were less skillful than the MM5 and CLIPER-type forecasts at all forecast intervals, and were severely degraded by a large negative bias at the initial time. The deficiency in these intensity forecasts is shown to be related to model spin-up (lasting 12-54 h) problems caused by the lack of a bogus vortex and a cold start initialization from the interpolation of the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS) analysis to the 12- km and 4-km grids. Thus, a more appropriate initial vortex representation will be required to improve intensity forecasts.

Book excerpt: The short term teleconnections arising from an individual tropical cyclone in tne western Pacific (typhoon Seth, October 1994) were examined using an operational global data assimilation system and numerical weather prediction model. During the data assimilation, the model's initial conditions were modified using a tropical cyclone bogusing procedure that either maintained or eliminated the individual storm. These different initial conditions were used in six extended-range forecasts of about 3.5 weeks duration. Three of these forecasts simulated the atmosphere with tne tropical cyclone and three without the storm. The ensemble average differences between the forecasts with the storm and those without it were used to infer the global teleconnection response to the tropical cyclone. This response was dominated by a strong and persistent Rossby wave train that extended from east Asia across the North Pacific into North America. This wave train was initiated when an anticyclonic circulation formed near Japan as the tropical cyclone approached the east Asian jet. The anticyclone formation was primarily the result of two factors: (1) vortex stretching; and (2) absolute vorticity advection as divergent outflow from the tropical cyclone crossed the large absolute vorticity gradient of the east Asian jet. The wave response was quasi-stationary. However, the basic wave train (i.e., the teleconnection pattern) developed within a week due to a relatively rapid eastward propagation of wave energy across the North Pacific and North America. In regions of strong jet flow, this propagation tended to parallel the flow while in regions of weaker flow, the propagation had stronger poleward or equatorward components. The wave train intensified well after the tropical cyclone and the initial wave formation process had dissipated.

Book excerpt: Forecasts of tropical cyclone (TC) formation and intensity change in the north-western Pacific basin are often lacking in skill, in part due to the paucity of conventional oceanic observations that are assimilated into the operational models. This lack of observations has also constrained our understanding of how TC formation is governed by environmental processes. Recently, remotely-sensed observations from satellites have become a routine and important input to the global data assimilation systems. To our knowledge, this project represents the first time anyone has tried to evaluate the impact of targeted satellite data on TC forecasts using an automated dynamic targeted observing strategy. TCS-08 will afford us the opportunity to employ specially-processed satellite data along with observations collected in situ by the NAVY P-3, and other platforms, to investigate these objectives as they apply in the western north Pacific TC basin. The development of successful real-time strategies to optimally assimilate wind data from satellites will ultimately lead to the provision of improved initial and boundary conditions for the Navy's envisioned mesoscale coupled ocean-wave-atmosphere forecast model.

Book excerpt: The performance of the Nested Tropical Cyclone Model (NTCM) for 542 track forecasts in the western North Pacific is evaluated with respect to five storm-related parameters: intensity, 12-h change in intensity, latitude, longitude and size. This study is intended to aid the operational forecaster in deciding when to use the NTCM based on storm-related parameters at the forecast time. The storm-related parameters are divided into three subsamples (about 180 in each) and the forecasts are evaluated in terms of the mean forecast error, median forecast error and systematic (zonal and meridional) error. Cross-track (CT) and along-track (AT) components are computed relative to a Climatory and Persistence (CLIPER) track. A scoring system (M) that assesses penalty points for forecasts in incorrect terciles is used to compare the accuracy of the NTCM and CLIPER forecasts within the subsamples. For the entire sample, the NTCM has a slow bias, especially at the 12- through 36-h forecast periods. It also performs better for storms with initial latitudes south of 13 N and initial longitudes west of 129 E. For very large storms, the NTCM forecasts have both left-of-track and westward biases which indicate problems of the NTCM in predicting recurvature of such systems. The NTCM (which has a 60-kt bogus) forecasts for storms with initial intensities between 50 and 75 kt have much lower CT/AT M scores and smaller forecast errors than the subsamples with initial intensities less than 50 kt or greater than 75 kt. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 23 (thesis year 1978) a total of 10,148 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 220 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 23 reports these submitted in 1978, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
