Download or read book One Life, Mine written by Emma S. Garrod and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third reader of my long-gone school days said something like, Life is a river, from its small and unimportant beginning it flows steadily onward. It may hesitate, but never stop until early or late its end is reached. By anyones calculations, the river of my life has been a long and, on the whole, a very placid one. No treacherous rapids or impassable falls have ever disturbed its steady flow. I have filled many pages with recollections of what to some may seem a very humdrum and uneventful life. Arent most lives just that except to the individuals who have lived them? This self-appointed task has been a very pleasant one. I trust that someone sometime in the future will find pleasure and perhaps a bit of knowledge hidden in these pages. It is said that three score years and ten is ones allotment for life; beyond that, one lives on borrowed time. It has never been clear to me just where and from whom this time is borrowed. I must say, the last decade and a half that I have borrowed from somewhere have been most satisfactory. I most sincerely hope that my credit will hold good awhile longer
Book Synopsis A Marriage Out West by : Theresa Russell
Download or read book A Marriage Out West written by Theresa Russell and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Marriage Out West is an intimate biographical account of two fascinating figures of twentieth-century archaeology. Frances Theresa Peet Russell, an educator, married Harvard anthropologist Frank Russell in June 1900. They left immediately on a busman’s honeymoon to the Southwest. Their goal was twofold: to travel to an arid environment to quiet Frank’s tuberculosis and to find archaeological sites to support his research. During their brief marriage, the Russells surveyed almost all of Arizona Territory, traveling by horse over rugged terrain and camping in the back of a Conestoga wagon in harsh environmental conditions. Nancy J. Parezo and Don D. Fowler detail the grit and determination of the Russells’ unique collaboration over the course of three field seasons. Delivering the first biographical account of Frank Russell’s life, this book brings detail to his life and work from childhood until his death in 1903. Parezo and Fowler analyze the important contributions Theresa and Frank made to the bourgeoning field of archaeology and Akimel O’odham (Pima) ethnography. They also offer never-before-published information on Theresa’s life after Frank’s death and her subsequent career as a professor of English literature and philosophy at Stanford University. In 1906 Theresa Russell published In Pursuit of a Graveyard: Being the Trail of an Archaeological Wedding Journey, a twelve-part serial in Out West magazine. Theresa’s articles constituted an experiential narrative based on field journals and remembrances of life in the northern Southwest. The work offers both a biography and a seasonal field narrative that emphasized personal experiences rather than traditional scientific field notes. Included in A Marriage Out West, Theresa’s writing provides an invaluable participant’s perspective of early 1900s American archaeology and ethnography and life out West.

Book Synopsis Death and Dying in Central Appalachia by : James K. Crissman
Download or read book Death and Dying in Central Appalachia written by James K. Crissman and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Crissman explores cultural traits related to death and dying in Appalachian sections of Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and West Virginia, showing how they have changed since the 1600s. Relying on archival materials, almost forty photographs, and interviews with more than 400 mountain dwellers, Crissman focuses on the importance of family and "neighborliness" in mountain society. Written for both scholarly and general audiences, the book contains sections on the death watch, body preparation, selection or construction of a coffin or casket, digging the grave by hand, the wake, the funeral, and other topics. Crissman then demonstrates how technology and the encroachment of American society have turned these vital traditions into the disappearing practices of the past.

Book Synopsis The Black, The White, and The Grey by : J.M. Taylor
Download or read book The Black, The White, and The Grey written by J.M. Taylor and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-09-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you proud of where you come from, Are you proud of what you’ve done? Do you linger alone, living in your past, Or are you proud of how far you’ve come? (“Proud,” p. 123) For some of us, life is not easy, right from the jump. What seems so natural and easy to others can become hard—hard as ice, stifling as quicksand—when our own minds seem to plague us. Perhaps it’s because of something we haven’t been able to process—some trauma, heartbreak, grief. Or perhaps life has never been easy to metabolize—dealing with the pain we inevitably must face. Striking, forceful, and animated by intense feeling, The Black, the White, and the Grey is a tripartite poetic journey through mental illness—from the black of depression to the white of manic euphoria, through the grey numbness that lies between. The poems speak to difficult feelings many of us encounter, but which are rarely given voice, from the despair of addiction to the suffocating pain of a loved one’s death. For those of us who do identify with mental illness, we may see ourselves especially reflected in first-time author Taylor’s dauntlessly honest poems, which speak to the darkest corners of human experience—heartbreak, grief, substance abuse, self-harm, addiction, suicide—as well as the love and faith that can (sometimes) manage to carry us through. Ultimately, though, no matter the weight we must bear, as the book’s final section, the white, affirms, there is hope and healing at the end of the tunnel we travel.

Book Synopsis God's Potpourri of Love by : Evelyn B. Ryan
Download or read book God's Potpourri of Love written by Evelyn B. Ryan and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book lets the reader see into the personality of God and His love for all. He is a very diversified God and allows us to laugh or cry in these poems. We can move on from the spiritual to the very human comedy of errors that we are prone to make and we can laugh at ourselves. Some poems also describe the beauty of the world that God made exclusively for us. We can touch the face of nature and know that God is giving His approval. These poems are not so deep that they cannot be enjoyed by anyone who reads them. They were meant to be enjoyed with your favorite beverage of choice, sitting in a comfortable chair or beside a loved one in a quiet setting. Good poetry links heart to heart, mind to mind, and promotes an understanding that heightens spiritual love. May these poems do that for you, the reader.

Preacher and Jamie McCallister head for the hills to uncover the truth behind a gruesome mountain massacre—and find themselves trapped in a nest of merciless, sadistic killers. . . . FORT BUZZARD They were innocent men, slaughtered in the Rockies. A party of land surveyors who met their grisly fate at the hands of the Crow Indians—or so it seems. Some folks think the story is a lie. And now it’s up to U.S. Army Lieutenant Ron Stanton to figure out what really happened up there in those desolate, bloodsoaked mountains. As his guides, Preacher and Jamie McCallister agree to retrace the footsteps of the doomed party—come hell or high water—but first they’ll have to pass through a particularly nasty piece of purgatory known as Fort Buzzard . . . Fort Buzzard—officially Gullickson’s Fort—earned its nefarious nickname because of the human vultures it attracts. Namely the brutes and brawlers hired by Gullickson to protect his interests. When a nearby trading post is suddenly attacked—and two young women carried off by Indians—Preacher and McCallister smell a rat. The Crows swear they’re not responsible for the attack, the abduction, or the mountain party massacre. Preacher and McCallister believe them—but proving it won’t be easy. This road to justice only leads to more dead ends—and the biggest, bloodiest showdown in Rocky Mountain history . . . Live Free. Read Hard.
