Book excerpt: Census net migration data and estimates of net migration obtained by the residual method, representing the difference between total population change and natural change during a period, are compared, and some general problems in the use of the residual method are discussed. Several residual methods--the vital statistics method and the forward, reverse, and average survival rate methods--are described, compared, and evaluated. On the basis of a symbolic model representing the population in an age group in terms of migration cohorts, it is shown how the various survival rate formulas, unlike the vital statistics method, fail to make an accurate allowance for the net migration of persons who die during the migration period, except under very restricted conditions of migration. The maximum theoretical errors in the use of the various survival rate formulas, resulting from the inability of survival rates to measure deaths occurring in an area exactly, and the theoretical errors under different conditions of timing of migration, are developed, and suggestions are given as to how the problem may be handled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a collection of key papers about migration, focusing on multiple aspects of international and internal migration in various times and places. Because migration has been such an important part of global peopling, the book contains synopses of major geographic movements from ancient and early history as well as the present. It includes material from anthropology, archaeology, criminology, demography, economics, ethnic studies, geography, health sciences, history, law, public policy, political science, psychology, and sociology. By providing a treatment of migration that is multifaceted, comparative, and multi-disciplinary, it offers not only a basis for conceptualizing broad features of migration and their changes, but also one for discerning the formal and informal policy auspices that have influenced migration. The book thus constitutes a significant resource for students, teachers, practitioners, scholars, and researchers interested in or working on aspects of migration in any field. It should be particularly useful for people seeking information and knowledge about migration from fields other than their own.

Book excerpt: Internal Migration: A Comparative Perspective is the third in a series of publications sponsored by the Committee on Comparative Urban Economics. This book highlights the integral migration in several regions of the world and the problems in regions of varying levels of economic development, and with different economic systems. This text is organized into five parts encompassing 24 chapters. The introductory part describes the interactions between migration and socioeconomic development, along with the functions and dynamics of the migration process. The next part explores the methodological aspects of migration, including the models, measurements, and theoretical reflections of internal migration. Other parts discuss the effect of migration on regions and individuals. These chapters also present some case studies of internal migration in the West and Eastern Europe. The demographic effect of migration on an urban population, the ethnicity as a barrier to migration, and the influence of social and geographical mobility on the stability of kinship systems are reviewed. The concluding part relates a comparative disciplinary and systemic view of migration. This book will be of great value to economists, sociologists, and social workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of several years of experience in teaching principles and methods of demographic analysis at the Department of Demography of the University of Louvain. Chapters 1 and 2 deal with the basic principles and methods involved in the two approaches demographers usually take, i.e., cohort and period analysis. Chapters 3-6 are devoted to applying these principles and methods to the particular phenomena with which the demog rapher is especially concerned: mortality, nuptiality, natality, and spatial mobility. In order to maintain coherence, examples have been placed at the end of each major section instead of being dispersed throughout the text. This should enable the reader to grasp both the theory and the example as a whole, rather than envisaging the theory as a particular reply to a specific problem. Finally, each chapter ends with a list of references, to which is added a selection of major books and articles in population analysis drawn mainly from the American, British, and French demographic literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, this volume examines conceptual and theoretical aspects of the study of internal migration, both in chapters dealing specifically with theory and data and in case studies. The book discusses the question of who migrates, and why and what are the patterns of flow and direction of movement. The consequences of migration are analysed. Migration is one of the most difficult components of population change to conceptualize and measure and this book considers a wide range of aspects of migration and the problems connected with it.
