Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Big-Game Hunting: The Book of the Boone and Crockett Club In behalf of game protection the Club works through the State for the procuring and setting apart of reservations where for ests and game alike shall be protected at all seasons by the law. These great forest reservations thus become the nurseries and breeding-grounds of game and of the large wild animals which are elsewhere inevitably exterminated by the march of settlement. Already several such reservations have been established in different States, both by Na tional and by State action - for instance, the Adirondack Reserve in New York, the Col orado Canon Reserve in Arizona, the big timber reserves in Colorado and Washing ton, the island set apart in Alaska as an undisturbed breeding-ground for salmon and sea-fowl, the Yosemite Valley and the Se. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunting in the Wilderness: Big Game Hunting North of the Amazon I have always held the opinion that South America has created a gap in the annals of big game hunting in the world. Many excellent works have been produced on the subject in Africa, Asia and North America, but relatively little has been said of the opportunities present to shooters South of the Panama. This series of articles upon big-game hunting was written for H arper's Round Table, and published therein in 1897. The picture of ranch-life which forms the closing chapter appeared in H arper's Round Table in 1896. These articles are now presented together in book form for the first time after consultation with the author. For the title of the book and the proof-reading the publishers are te sponsible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Big Game of North America: Its Habits, Habitat, Haunts, and Characteristics; How, When, and Where to Hunt It I am requested to write an introduction to Mr. Shields' book, "The Big Game of North America," and it affords me great pleasure to comply with this request. Yet, the first question I asked myself when I read the editors letter was, "Why introduce such men as these to American readers?" What need is there to commend, to reading sportsmen or to naturalists, a book written by such able, conscientious, indefatigable workers in the interests of natural history, field sports, game protection, and sportsmen's literature as the men whose names appear as contributors to this work? Why should I write in behalf of the noble, the pathetic, the conscientious "Shoshone;" the careful, painstaking "Roxey Newton;" the eloquent, the enthusiastic, the poetic "Algonquin;" the gallant champion of the hounds. Doctor Ellzey; the venerable lover of Nature, Colonel Alexander; the genial, big-hearted "Uncle Fuller;" the nature-loving "Sibyllene;" the careful naturalist, Butler, or the ever fresh and interesting old hunter, "Sangamon?" Their numerous and fascinating contributions to the sportsmen's press have made their names household words throughout the land. Why should I introduce the sturdy, cautious Van Dyke; the eloquent, the beloved "Boone;" the flowery "Sillalicum;" the earnest, enthusiastic "Gaucho," or the arduous mountaineer, "Coquina?" I need not; I will not presume to do so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big Game Shooting is a book full of both fascinating tales and practical advice on a kind of hunting that has gone quite seriously out of fashion. This is both a collection of stories about hunting big game and an instructional on topics of interest to the avid marksman. The book is separated into chapters, of which Clive Phillipps-Wolley has authored four, with guest contributors responsible for the remaining sections. Chapters vary in terms of scope, with some examining a single breed of game and others more broadly discussing a topic of interest to the hunting community. Specific topics detailed including arctic hunting, the stag of the Alps, the Scandinavian elk, the large game of Spain and Portugal, and several others. The book transitions to a series of instructional chapters that focus on setting up camps and transportation, selecting rifles and ammunition, and hints on preservation and taxidermy. The title is concluded by a detailed appendix. Big Game Shooting is a work that will appeal to the hunting enthusiast. The first-hand accounts of hunting expeditions that form the largest section of the book are entertaining and educational. The instructional chapters can be read both practically and as a text illuminating the history of hunting practices. While Clive Phillipps-Wolley receives credit as the primary author, all of the included writers provide meaningful contributions to the work. While the practice of shooting big game is less than highly regarded among environmentally concious individuals much of this advice will also help those "hunting" with a camera. The tales of hunting expeditions are entertaining, and the advice provided practical. Big Game Shooting is a worthwhile read. The free, self-reliant, adventurous life, with its rugged and stalwart democracy; the wild surroundings, the grand beauty of the scenery, the chance to study the ways and habits of the woodland creatures - all these unite to give to the career of the wilderness hunter its peculiar charm. The chase is among the best Of all national pastimes; it cultivates that vigorous manliness for the lack Of which in a nation, as in an individual, the possession of no other qualities can possibly atone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Big Game of Africa This volume is not only a narrative of my own wanderings and experiences in that continent, but is also intended to be a guide book to those many who are interested in the life and habits of the African game animals as well as in the best way of stalking these with either camera or gun. For in the many good books on hunting in the Dark Continent, little or nothing has been said that may help the would-be African big game hunter in the selection of the proper outfit, guns, cameras, curing materials, etc., nor do they give him any definite information as to where, when and how to secure the game he wants, and none of them contains the most necessary introduction to the ki-swahili language, even a slight knowledge of which will prove of immense help to the sportsman when hunting in British East Africa, German East Africa and Uganda. This book is the result of my own experiences and observations during three different expeditions to British East Africa, and con tains the most reliable information I was able to obtain from other sportsmen and professional hunters, as well as from the wild sons of that wonderful game country who, themselves, spend most of their lives roaming around among the Big Game of Africa. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXVI. HUNTING THE JAVELINA ALONG THE RIO GRANDE IN TEXAS. Accepting an invitation from my friend, George D. Ford, of Kansas City, Missouri, to accompany him to his ranch in Southwest Texas, on a hunting trip, we left for Cactus, December 6th, 1910. In the party were my old friend, H. P. Wright, and Mr. Foster, of Kansas City. Mr. Ford's ranch is composed of one hundred and fifty thousand acres all under a four wired, barbed fence. This ranch is located one hundred and fifty miles below San Antonio. When we arrived at the latter place where we were to change cars to another road, we learned that the train was eight hours late. Here we were met by "Tom" Coleman, of San Antonio, who ordered a special train of two coaches to take us on our journey. Mr. Coleman, known all over the Southwest as "Tom," is one of those big-hearted, wholesouled Texans who have, by their congeniality, made the state famous for the hospitality of its citizens. Tom has under wire about nine hundred miles of fence enclosing five hundred thousand acres of Southwestern Texas grazing land. We were met at Cactus by some fence riders of the Callahan (Mr. Ford's) ranch, and our equipment and selves were conveyed to the ranch house, ten miles from Cactus. To my surprise I found large houses with modern improvements, such as bath rooms and other conveniences. What strange surroundings to one who has been in the habit, while on hunting trips, of sleeping on the ground, in snow, rain and cold, to have nice brass beds, clean linen, a table and chairs to sit down in and a napkin at each china plate, and fresh cream and butter. Amid all these modern luxuries I could stand on the veranda, almost any day, and see jack rabbits, quails, wolves, and on several occasions, wild...

In presenting the second volume, a number of sketches are included written by members who have hunted big game in other lands. The contributions of those whose names are so well known in connection with explorations in China and Tibet, and in Africa, have an exceptional interest for men whose use of the rifle has been confined entirely to the North American continent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wilderness Hunter: An Account of the Big Game of the United States and Its Chase With Horse Hound, and Riffle Now, as I have pointed out, the most plastic ma terial, which most easily and most nearly approximates a physical manifestation of this spirit, is undoubtedly the wilderness. There each of its aspects or attributes finds satisfaction in the most direct terms. There a man can find room, physical room, in wide spaces under distant stars, to reach outward in the utmost expansion of which he is capable. He meets the conditions of life face to face and personally. The lowest terms of bare existence he must accomplish before he can proceed on his quest - or even survive. Warmth, food, and shelter - the three essentials - are to be had only by the exercise of his wits and hands. And the strong stark primitive forces of nature are always ready with their tests of his physical and moral strength. Man matches himself against the world-wide never-changing forces of the Wilderness, and through them gains a measure of himself.
