Book Synopsis Regional Studies by : Bozzano G Luisa
Download or read book Regional Studies written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional Studies is a collection of papers that deals with strata-bound mineral deposits in the Eastern Alps, in the Canadian Cordillera, in north-central, and southwest England. Other papers describe southern African stratiform ore deposits and the genesis of Irish base-metal deposits. One paper compares the various types of volcanogenic mineral deposits and their depositional environments characterized by distinct assemblages of volcanic rocks, which formed in the Northern Appalachians during certain episodes of the tectonic evolution. The paper notes that the youngest volcanogenic deposits of economic interest are tungsten—molybdenum—tin—bismuth base metal deposits in highly altered rhyolitic sub-volcanic complexes at Mount Pleasant, New Brunswick. Another paper reviews the mineral occurrences in southern Africa that include stratiform, non-magmatic, ore deposits, The paper considers a subdivision of deposits formed from surficial chemical processes during previous (or current) cycles of weathering and erosion. Many ore bodies have a dual origin: for example, the iron in the high-grade hematite deposits is partly syngenetic and partly epigenetic. The paper also illustrates the time-dependence of some stratiform ore deposits in southern Africa in a schematic diagram. Geologists, researchers, or engineers whose works are related with ore deposits and mining will benefit tremendously from the collection.

Book Synopsis Regional Trends in the Geology of the Appalachian-Caledonian-Hercynian-Mauritanide Orogen by : P.E. Schenk
Download or read book Regional Trends in the Geology of the Appalachian-Caledonian-Hercynian-Mauritanide Orogen written by P.E. Schenk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical Appalachian, Caledonian, Hercynian, and Mauritanide orogens are now only segments of a once-continuous Paleozoic mountain belt which has been fragmented during Mesozoic-Cenozoic formation of the North Atlantic Ocean. These segments are major parts of the countries surrounding the North Atlantic - most of which are members of NATO. The aim of this NATO conference was to evaluate these fragments in terms of their pre-Mesozoic positions, and to attempt a synthesis of their geologic evolution on an international and orogen-wide scale. Geologists who have studied these scattered remnants have been separated by both geography and discipline. Orogen-wide syntheses have beeen attempted in the past by individuals who are specialists not only in discipline but also in geography; therefore, these attempts have not been satisfactory to everyone. This conference brought together the foremost specialists in different disciplines from each country. They attempted to teach other specialists, not only in their own fields, but in other disciplines, about regional variations and particular problems. The resulting international cross-fertilization, both within and between speciaLties, enriched individual workers and helped to provide a multi-disciplinary overview of the orogen.
Book Synopsis The Structure of Western Europe by : J. G. C. Anderson
Download or read book The Structure of Western Europe written by J. G. C. Anderson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a brief account of the stratigraphy in each case, the author summarises the structure of the main tectonic units of Western Europe, the units being defined within the framework of Precambrian, Caledonian, Hercynian and Alpine structures. The work provides accounts of these structural units both for geological study in general and for field visits for advanced school level and research students. A useful complementary volume to 'The Structure of the British Isles' (Anderson and Owen).

Book Synopsis Physics and Chemistry of the Earth by : L. H. Ahrens
Download or read book Physics and Chemistry of the Earth written by L. H. Ahrens and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, Volume VII focuses on three topics—orogenic fold-belts and a hypothesis of earth evolution; earthquake energy and magnitude; and meteoritic, solar, and terrestrial rare-earth distributions. This book consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 examines features of the distribution and history of the Precambrian fold-belts in relation to the theory of continental drift. The two kinds of information obtained from seismograph records—time readings and amplitude readings that provide information on the total seismic wave energy released in earthquakes—are elaborated in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses the meteoritic and terrestrial matter in rare earth elements (REE). This publication is a good reference to students and researchers conducting work on earth science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past three decades, urban groundwater has emerged as one of the worlds most pressing issues. Explosive population growth, most prevalent in cities, has placed an inordinate demand on groundwater supply, prompting concerns for its long-term sustainability at a time when the quality of available groundwater resources is being increasingly
Book Synopsis Fractures, Fluid Flow and Mineralization by : Ken McCaffrey
Download or read book Fractures, Fluid Flow and Mineralization written by Ken McCaffrey and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 1999 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrothermal mineralization is usually structurally controlled so it is important to understand the role of faulting and fracturing in enhancing rock permeability and facilitating fluid flow and mass transfer. This is the main theme of this interdisciplinary volume and the papers included are intended to provide an overview of current ideas at the interfaces of structural geology, fluid flow and mineralization research.

Book Synopsis Sedimentary Basins of Continental Margins and Cratons by : M.H.P. Bott
Download or read book Sedimentary Basins of Continental Margins and Cratons written by M.H.P. Bott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Geotectonics, 12: Sedimentary Basins of Continental Margins and Cratons focuses on the formation, movements, characteristics, and evolution of sedimentary basins of continental margins and cratons. The selection first offers information on mechanisms of basin subsidence and rheology of the lithosphere. Discussions focus on hypotheses of basin subsidence mechanism, testing the hypotheses, elastic properties and flexural rigidity of the lithosphere, and rheology of young continental margins. The text then elaborates on flexure of the lithosphere and continental margin basins and thermal and mechanical evolution of the Michigan basin. The book ponders on the formation of sedimentary basins of graben type by extension of the continental crust and major synchronous events in continental shelves. Topics include inception of shelf development, mid-cretaceous change, taphrogenic subsidence, and energy budget of wedge subsidence mechanism. The manuscript also examines development of graben associated with the initial ruptures of the Atlantic Ocean and observations on the processes of sedimentary basin formation at the margins of Southern Africa. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the study of continental margins.
