Book Synopsis Tools in Fluvial Geomorphology by : G. Mathias Kondolf
Download or read book Tools in Fluvial Geomorphology written by G. Mathias Kondolf and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluvial Geomorphology studies the biophysical processes acting in rivers, and the sediment patterns and landforms resulting from them. It is a discipline of synthesis, with roots in geology, geography, and river engineering, and with strong interactions with allied fields such as ecology, engineering and landscape architecture. This book comprehensively reviews tools used in fluvial geomorphology, at a level suitable to guide the selection of research methods for a given question. Presenting an integrated approach to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, it provides guidance for researchers and professionals on the tools available to answer questions on river restoration and management. Thoroughly updated since the first edition in 2003 by experts in their subfields, the book presents state-of-the-art tools that have revolutionized fluvial geomorphology in recent decades, such as physical and numerical modelling, remote sensing and GIS, new field techniques, advances in dating, tracking and sourcing, statistical approaches as well as more traditional methods such as the systems framework, stratigraphic analysis, form and flow characterisation and historical analysis. This book: Covers five main types of geomorphological questions and their associated tools: historical framework; spatial framework; chemical, physical and biological methods; analysis of processes and forms; and future understanding framework. Provides guidance on advantages and limitations of different tools for different applications, data sources, equipment and supplies needed, and case studies illustrating their application in an integrated perspective. It is an essential resource for researchers and professional geomorphologists, hydrologists, geologists, engineers, planners, and ecologists concerned with river management, conservation and restoration. It is a useful supplementary textbook for upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and interdisciplinary courses in river management and restoration.
Book Synopsis Theoretical Morphodynamics: River Meandering by : Giovanni Seminara
Download or read book Theoretical Morphodynamics: River Meandering written by Giovanni Seminara and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph discusses the mechanics of Meandering Rivers with the help of the mathematical and modeling tools built up in the previous monograph of the same Authors (monograph 1 of the present series). After introducing the reader to the ubiquitous character of meandering streams, we discuss the hydrodynamics of curved channels with fixed beds and banks. Next, we extend the analysis to account for the mobile character of the bed and show that it gives rise to the alternate sequence of riffles and pools that characterize river meanders. Allowing for the erodible character of the river banks then allows to build up a rational theory of meander formation able to explain most of the features observed in nature: meander growth, migration, skewing, multiple loops, cutoffs and meander belts.

Book Synopsis Fluvial Hydraulics by : S. L. Dingman
Download or read book Fluvial Hydraulics written by S. L. Dingman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bridging the gap between qualitative and quantitative descriptions of natural rivers, Fluvial Hydraulics provides a sound understanding of water and sediment flows in natural rivers. This understanding is essential for modeling and predicting hydrologic and geomorphologic processes, erosion, sediment transport, water supply and quality, habitat management, flood hazards, and river restoration. The book will be especially valuable in providing a firm scientific basis for the growing field of river restoration. It bridges the gap between the highly quantitative mechanics-based civil-engineering approach to stream hydraulics and the more qualitative treatments of fluvial geomorphology typical of earth sciences and natural resources curricula. Many concepts are illustrated using measurements of natural river flows." "The book is specifically designed for upper-level students and practitioners who want to gain a better understanding of river behavior. The bases of the equations that are used to describe and predict river flows are systematically presented, including dimensional analysis."--BOOK JACKET.
