Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 1 of this book presents a brief overview of macro-economic performance of the Somali economy and more detailed sectoral analyses of rural development and employment, urban informal sectors, women's employment and income-generating activities, and education, manpower and employment with an additional focus on vocational training. As a result of the Somali government's interest in data collection and methodological issues, Technical papers 1-6 are presented in Part 2 of the report and are pertinent in terms of improving the current fragile data base of the country (national accounts, GDP, poverty, population). Part 3 of the report presents ten project proposals which JASPA considers critically important in leading to a better understanding of the Somali economy and generating more employment and incomes for Somalia's vulnerable groups.

Book excerpt: This 2017 Article IV Consultation highlights that despite a severe drought and sporadic terrorist attacks, Somalia avoided a significant economic slowdown in 2017 with support from the national and international community. Economic activity in 2017 is expected to have slowed. The drought that hit the country since late 2016 has receded, but it took a considerable toll, particularly in the remote areas. GDP growth is projected to have remained subdued at 1.8 percent in 2017. Driven by higher food prices, year-over-year inflation increased to 5.2 percent at the end of December 2017. A small budget surplus was achieved by the end of September 2017, even though domestic revenue fell short of the program target.

Book Synopsis Making Mogadishu Safe by : Alice Hills
Download or read book Making Mogadishu Safe written by Alice Hills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Whitehall Paper explores the ways in which Mogadishu’s inhabitants try to stay out of harm’s way, from security officials in the presidential compound of Villa Somalia to the city’s powerful district commissioners, from patrolling policemen to the women road-sweepers in the rubbish-filled alleyways of the Waberi district. Its central proposition is that security is best understood as a coherent relationship or activity based on the need for physical safety today, rather than in the future. It uses the neighbourhood-watch schemes developed in certain districts of Mogadishu - most notably Waberi - to understand the ways in which the city’s inhabitants respond to the security models promoted by international advisers.

Book Synopsis Making Sense of Somali History by : Abdullahi, Abdurahman
Download or read book Making Sense of Somali History written by Abdullahi, Abdurahman and published by Adonis and Abbey Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last three decades, Somalia has been associated with such horrible terms as 'state collapse', 'civil wars', 'foreign intervention', 'warlordism', 'famine', 'piracy' and 'terrorism'. This depiction was in contradiction to its earlier images as the cradle of the human race, the kernel of ancient civilizations, the land of Punt, a homogeneous nation-state and the first democratic state in Africa. So how did things fall apart in the country? This Volume 1 of a two-volume narrative, Dr. Abdullahi explores the history of the people of Somali peninsula since ancient times, the advent of Islam and colonialism, the rise and fall of Somali nationalism and the perspectives of the Somali state collapse. The book uses a unique thematic approach and analysis to make sense of Somali history by emphasizing the responsibility of Somali political elites in creating and perpetuating the disastrous conditions in their country.

This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exiled populations, who increasingly refer to themselves as diaspora communities, hold a strong stake in the fate of their countries of origin. In a world becoming ever more interconnected, they engage in 'long-distance politics' towards, send financial remittances to and support social development in their homelands. Transnational diaspora networks have thus become global forces shaping the relationship between countries, regions and continents. This important intervention, written by scholars working at the cutting edge of diaspora and conflict, challenges the conventional wisdom that diaspora are all too often warmongers, their time abroad causing them to become more militant in their engagement with local affairs. Rather, they can and should be a force for good in bringing peace to their home countries. Featuring in-depth case studies from the Horn of Africa, including Somalia and Ethiopia, this volume presents an essential rethinking of a key issue in African politics and development.
