Book excerpt: Integer Programming: Theory, Applications, and Computations provides information pertinent to the theory, applications, and computations of integer programming. This book presents the computational advantages of the various techniques of integer programming. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the general categorization of integer applications and explains the three fundamental techniques of integer programming. This text then explores the concept of implicit enumeration, which is general in a sense that it is applicable to any well-defined binary program. Other chapters consider the branch-and-bound methods, the cutting-plane method, and its closely related asymptotic problem. This book discusses as well several specialized algorithms for certain well-known integer models and provides an alternative approach to the solution of the integer problem. The final chapter deals with a number of observations about the formulations and executions of integer programming models. This book is a valuable resource for industrial engineers and research workers.
Book Synopsis Binary Integer Linear Programming by : Stanford University. Department of Operations Research
Download or read book Binary Integer Linear Programming written by Stanford University. Department of Operations Research and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report develops a hybrid algorithm to solve the binary integer linear programming problem. This problem involves optimizing a linear objective function subject to a set of linear inequalities where, in addition, we require the variables to take on the value 0 or 1. the approach developed is that of implicit enumeration; that is, the set of all possible binary combinations of values for the variables is searched without considering each combination explicitly. This is accomplished by applying a series of tests which when satisfied allow immediate elimination of large subsets of these completions. It is in the choice of tests to be used that this algorithm may be termed a hybrid. Borrowing penalties and pseudocosts as well as binary infeasibility and conditional binary infeasibility tests from previous approaches, the algorithm is built to use each of their strengths. In addition, an existing heuristic procedure is used to generate a good feasible binary point at the outset. Thus, a good initial bound on the optimal function value is available. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents a novel strategy for solving bi-level linear programming problem based on goal programming in neutrosophic numbers environment. Bi-level linear programming problem comprises of two levels namely upper or first level and lower or second level with one objective at each level. The objective function of each level decision maker and the system constraints are considered as linear functions with neutrosophic numbers of the form [p + q I], where p, q are real numbers and I represents indeterminacy.

This book was released on 2001-11-21 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tutorial contains written versions of seven lectures on Computational Combinatorial Optimization given by leading members of the optimization community. The lectures introduce modern combinatorial optimization techniques, with an emphasis on branch and cut algorithms and Lagrangian relaxation approaches. Polyhedral combinatorics as the mathematical backbone of successful algorithms are covered from many perspectives, in particular, polyhedral projection and lifting techniques and the importance of modeling are extensively discussed. Applications to prominent combinatorial optimization problems, e.g., in production and transport planning, are treated in many places; in particular, the book contains a state-of-the-art account of the most successful techniques for solving the traveling salesman problem to optimality.
Book Synopsis Foundations of Bilevel Programming by : Stephan Dempe
Download or read book Foundations of Bilevel Programming written by Stephan Dempe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book starts with the required results in parametric nonlinear optimization. This is followed by the main theoretical results including necessary and sufficient optimality conditions and solution algorithms for bilevel problems. Stationarity conditions can be applied to the lower level problem to transform the optimistic bilevel programming problem into a one-level problem. Properties of the resulting problem are highlighted and its relation to the bilevel problem is investigated. Stability properties, numerical complexity, and problems having additional integrality conditions on the variables are also discussed
Book Synopsis Applied Integer Programming by : Der-San Chen
Download or read book Applied Integer Programming written by Der-San Chen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible treatment of the modeling and solution of integer programming problems, featuring modern applications and software In order to fully comprehend the algorithms associated with integer programming, it is important to understand not only how algorithms work, but also why they work. Applied Integer Programming features a unique emphasis on this point, focusing on problem modeling and solution using commercial software. Taking an application-oriented approach, this book addresses the art and science of mathematical modeling related to the mixed integer programming (MIP) framework and discusses the algorithms and associated practices that enable those models to be solved most efficiently. The book begins with coverage of successful applications, systematic modeling procedures, typical model types, transformation of non-MIP models, combinatorial optimization problem models, and automatic preprocessing to obtain a better formulation. Subsequent chapters present algebraic and geometric basic concepts of linear programming theory and network flows needed for understanding integer programming. Finally, the book concludes with classical and modern solution approaches as well as the key components for building an integrated software system capable of solving large-scale integer programming and combinatorial optimization problems. Throughout the book, the authors demonstrate essential concepts through numerous examples and figures. Each new concept or algorithm is accompanied by a numerical example, and, where applicable, graphics are used to draw together diverse problems or approaches into a unified whole. In addition, features of solution approaches found in today's commercial software are identified throughout the book. Thoroughly classroom-tested, Applied Integer Programming is an excellent book for integer programming courses at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It also serves as a well-organized reference for professionals, software developers, and analysts who work in the fields of applied mathematics, computer science, operations research, management science, and engineering and use integer-programming techniques to model and solve real-world optimization problems.

Book Synopsis Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming by : Jon Lee
Download or read book Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming written by Jon Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many engineering, operations, and scientific applications include a mixture of discrete and continuous decision variables and nonlinear relationships involving the decision variables that have a pronounced effect on the set of feasible and optimal solutions. Mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems combine the numerical difficulties of handling nonlinear functions with the challenge of optimizing in the context of nonconvex functions and discrete variables. MINLP is one of the most flexible modeling paradigms available for optimization; but because its scope is so broad, in the most general cases it is hopelessly intractable. Nonetheless, an expanding body of researchers and practitioners — including chemical engineers, operations researchers, industrial engineers, mechanical engineers, economists, statisticians, computer scientists, operations managers, and mathematical programmers — are interested in solving large-scale MINLP instances.
