Book excerpt: This report presents operating conditions and test results for the six-ton-per-day Solvent-Refined Coal (SRC) pilot plant at Wilsonville, Alabama, during the first quarter of 1977. Amax Belle Ayr subbituminous coal processing was completed. The effects of varying the dissolver volume and the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide were determined for this coal. Processing of Emery coal, to produce 66 tons of ''reconstituted coal'' (equivalent to unfiltered SRC), was begun. Filter cakes generated by processing both of these coals have lower resistances to flow than those produced when processing eastern coals during 1976. Cake resistance appears to be a function of the fraction of unconverted coal in the solids. Results of testing alternate methods for mineral residue separation, as well as future plans for solids separation, are discussed.

Book excerpt: This final report summarizes the Health Program under the Solvent Refined Coal (SRC) Process Contract from January 1, 1976 through December 31, 1981 with particular emphasis on the period January 1, 1980 through December 31, 1981 . The major areas of activity within the program were: an industrial hygiene monitoring program, a clinical medical examination program, a personal hygiene and educational program, an epidemiology program, and a toxicological program. The industrial hygiene monitoring program during the past two years continued evaluation of occupational exposures to various air contaminants. The major emphasis was directed to the development, refinement and implementation of the skin contamination evaluation project. The medical examination program continued to indicate the absence of discernible occupationally related changes in employee medical profiles. In addition, appreciable effort was expended on efforts to develop a single layered garment which would prevent the appearance of black specks on the anterior thighs of plant operators working in areas of high particulate concentrations. The employee personal hygiene and educational program was extended to include both temporary and contract personnel. An epidemiology program was initiated during the period and efforts were concentrated primarily on program design and data collection. In the toxicological program, acute and genetic studies were completed on most of the SRC-II materials but no studies were initiated in the SRC-I portion of the program because of unavailability of test materials.

Book excerpt: The initial efforts concentrated on the development of appropriate analytical procedures for thirty-nine elements. Sensitive neutron activation procedures were developed for Ti, V, Ca, Mg, Al, Cl, Mn, As, Sb, Se, Hg, Br, Co, Ni, Cr, Fe, Na, Rb, Cs, K, Sc, Tb, Eu, Sm, Ce, La, Sr, Ba, Th, Hf, Ta, Ga, Zr, and Cu in feed coals, process solvent, SRC solid and liquid products, mineral residues, filter cake, by-product solvents, process and effluent waters, and by-product sulfur. Atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedures were developed for Pb, Cd and Be in various plant-derived streams and materials including process and effluent waters. This study of the SRC-I process concluded that the bulk of the trace elements in the coal feed appear to concentrate in the mineral residue with two exceptions; bromine and titanium appear to concentrate in the SRC-I solid product. High mercury, selenium and arsenic levels in the process water were effectively reduced by the treatment process to essentially natural levels. The treatment and dilution process was effective for the removal of other trace elements from the process water. Study of the SRC-II process found that the vacuum bottoms was the major sink for all trace elements studied with the exception of mercury. Much lower trace element concentrations were found in the SRC-II liquid product relative to the vacuum bottoms or the feed coal, irrespective of coal type. Mercury, and to a lesser degree arsenic, selenium and antimony, exhibited volatile behavior in the SRC-II process but the degree of volatility was strongly dependent on conditions or coal type. Process waters contained higher concentrations of mercury, selenium, arsenic and antimony; however, the treated SRC-II effluent waters met all appropriate standards including drinking water criteria.

Kentucky 9 coals from the Lafayette, Dotiki and Fies mines were processed. During 1980, the operating conditions and equipment were adjusted to evaluate potential process improvements. These experiments produced significant results in the following areas: Operating V103 High Pressure Separator in the hot mode; varying T102 Vacuum Column operating temperature; adding light SRC (LSRC), a product of the third stage of the Critical Solvent Deashing (CSD) unit, to the process solvent; investigating the effects of the chlorine content of the feed coal on corrosion in the process vessels; evaluating the effects of adding sodium carbonate on corrosion rates; operating under conditions of low severity; i.e., low reactor temperature and long residence time; and testing an alternate CSD deashing solvent. A series of simulation runs investigating the design operating conditions for a planned 6000 ton per day SRC-I demonstation plant were also completed. Numerous improvements were made in the CSD processing area, and the components for a hydrotreating unit were installed.
