Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the essential topics for a second-level course in strength of materials or mechanics of materials, with an emphasis on techniques that are useful for mechanical design. Design typically involves an initial conceptual stage during which many options are considered. At this stage, quick approximate analytical methods are crucial in determining which of the initial proposals are feasible. The ideal would be to get within 30% with a few lines of calculation. The designer also needs to develop experience as to the kinds of features in the geometry or the loading that are most likely to lead to critical conditions. With this in mind, the author tries wherever possible to give a physical and even an intuitive interpretation to the problems under investigation. For example, students are encouraged to estimate the location of weak and strong bending axes and the resulting neutral axis of bending before performing calculations, and the author discusses ways of getting good accuracy with a simple one degree of freedom Rayleigh-Ritz approximation. Students are also encouraged to develop a feeling for structural deformation by performing simple experiments in their outside environment, such as estimating the radius to which an initially straight bar can be bent without producing permanent deformation, or convincing themselves of the dramatic difference between torsional and bending stiffness for a thin-walled open beam section by trying to bend and then twist a structural steel beam by hand-applied loads at one end. In choosing dimensions for mechanical components, designers will expect to be guided by criteria of minimum weight, which with elementary calculations, generally leads to a thin-walled structure as an optimal solution. This consideration motivates the emphasis on thin-walled structures, but also demands that students be introduced to the limits imposed by structural instability. Emphasis is also placed on the effect of manufacturing errors on such highly-designed structures - for example, the effect of load misalignment on a beam with a large ratio between principal stiffness and the large magnification of initial alignment or loading errors in a strut below, but not too far below the buckling load. Book excerpt: Engineering Fluid Mechanics guides students from theory to application, emphasizing critical thinking, problem solving, estimation, and other vital engineering skills. Clear, accessible writing puts the focus on essential concepts, while abundant illustrations, charts, diagrams, and examples illustrate complex topics and highlight the physical reality of fluid dynamics applications. Over 1,000 chapter problems provide the “deliberate practice”—with feedback—that leads to material mastery, and discussion of real-world applications provides a frame of reference that enhances student comprehension. The study of fluid mechanics pulls from chemistry, physics, statics, and calculus to describe the behavior of liquid matter; as a strong foundation in these concepts is essential across a variety of engineering fields, this text likewise pulls from civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and more to provide a broadly relevant, immediately practicable knowledge base. Written by a team of educators who are also practicing engineers, this book merges effective pedagogy with professional perspective to help today’s students become tomorrow’s skillful engineers.

This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This solution manual accompanies my textbook on Mechanics of Materials, 2nd edition that can be printed or downloaded for free from my website madhuvable.org. Along with the free textbook there are also free slides, sample syllabus, sample exams, static and other mechanics course reviews, computerized tests, and gradebooks for instructors to record results of the computerized tests. This solution manual is designed for the instructors and may prove challenging to students. The intent was to help reduce the laborious algebra and to provide instructors with a way of checking solutions. It has been made available to students because it is next to impossible to maintain security of the manual even by large publishing companies. There are websites dedicated to obtaining a solution manuals for any course for a price. The students can use the manual as additional examples, a practice followed in many first year courses. Below is a brief description of the unique features of the textbook. There has been, and continues to be, a tremendous growth in mechanics, material science, and in new applications of mechanics of materials. Techniques such as the finite-element method and Moire interferometry were research topics in mechanics, but today these techniques are used routinely in engineering design and analysis. Wood and metal were the preferred materials in engineering design, but today machine components and structures may be made of plastics, ceramics, polymer composites, and metal-matrix composites. Mechanics of materials was primarily used for structural analysis in aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering, but today mechanics of materials is used in electronic packaging, medical implants, the explanation of geological movements, and the manufacturing of wood products to meet specific strength requirements. Though the principles in mechanics of materials have not changed in the past hundred years, the presentation of these principles must evolve to provide the students with a foundation that will permit them to readily incorporate the growing body of knowledge as an extension of the fundamental principles and not as something added on, and vaguely connected to what they already know. This has been my primary motivation for writing the textbook. Learning the course content is not an end in itself, but a part of an educational process. Some of the serendipitous development of theories in mechanics of materials, the mistakes made and the controversies that arose from these mistakes, are all part of the human drama that has many educational values, including learning from others' mistakes, the struggle in understanding difficult concepts, and the fruits of perseverance. The connection of ideas and concepts discussed in a chapter to advanced modern techniques also has educational value, including continuity and integration of subject material, a starting reference point in a literature search, an alternative perspective, and an application of the subject material. Triumphs and tragedies in engineering that arose from proper or improper applications of mechanics of materials concepts have emotive impact that helps in learning and retention of concepts according to neuroscience and education research. Incorporating educational values from history, advanced topics, and mechanics of materials in action or inaction, without distracting the student from the central ideas and concepts is an important complementary objective of the textbook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Machines and Mechanisms, Third Edition, is a comprehensive study of rigid-body mechanical systems and provides background for continued study in stress, strength, fatigue, life, modes of failure, lubrication and other advanced aspects of the design of mechanical systems. This third edition provides the background, notation, and nomenclature essential for students to understand the various and independent technical approaches that exist in the field of mechanisms, kinematics, and dynamics of machines. The authors employ all methods of analysis and development, with balanced use of graphical and analytic methods. New material includes an introduction of kinematic coefficients, which clearly separates kinematic (geometric) effects from speed or dynamic dependence. At the suggestion of users, the authors have included no written computer programs, allowing professors and students to write their own and ensuring that the book does not become obsolete as computers and programming languages change. Part I introduces theory, nomenclature, notation, and methods of analysis. It describes all aspects of a mechanism (its nature, function, classification, and limitations) and covers kinematic analyses (position, velocity, and acceleration). Part II shows the engineering applications involved in the selection, specification, design, and sizing of mechanisms that accomplish specific motion objectives. It includes chapters on cam systems, gears, gear trains, synthesis of linkages, spatial mechanisms, and robotics. Part III presents the dynamics of machines and the consequences of the proposed mechanism design specifications. New dynamic devices whose functions cannot be explained or understood without dynamic analysis are included. This third edition incorporates entirely new chapters on the analysis and design of flywheels, governors, and gyroscopes.
