This book contains English translations of almost all the Galois material. An introduction explains the context of Galois' work, the various publications in which it appears, and the vagaries of his manuscripts. Then there is a chapter in which the five mathematical articles published in his lifetime are reprinted. These are followed by the second memoir and other lesser known manuscripts. The primary aim is to establish a text of what Galois wrote. The details of what he did, the proper evidence of his genius, deserve to be well understood and appreciated by mathematicians as well as historians of mathematics.

The World Education Forum at Dakar began to recognize the growing importance of post-primary schooling for development. Only 25 percent of school-age children attend secondary school in the region--and fewer complete successfully, having consequences for gender equity, poverty reduction, and economic growth. As universal primary schooling becomes a reality, demand for secondary schools is increasing rapidly. Gaps between the educational levels of the labor force in Sub-Saharan Africa and other regions remain large. Girls are more often excluded from secondary schools than boys. Secondary schooling costs are high to both governments and households. This study explores how access to secondary education can be increased. Radical reforms are needed in low-enrollment countries to make secondary schooling more affordable and to provide more access to the majority currently excluded. The report identifies the rationale for increasing access, reviews the status of secondary education in Sub-Saharan Africa, charts the growth needed in different countries to reach different levels of participation, identifies the financial constraints on growth, and discusses the reforms needed to make access affordable. It concludes with a road map of ways to increase the probability that more of Africa's children will experience secondary schooling.

It is almost generally acknowledged that the classic work "Inequali ties" by G. H. HARDY, J. E. LITTLEWOOD and G. POLYA, which appeared in 1934, transformed the field of inequalities from a collection of isolated formulas into a systematic discipline. The modern Theory of Inequalities, as well as the continuing and growing interest in this field, undoubtedly stem from this work. The second English edition of this book, published in 1952, was unchanged except for three appendices, totalling 10 pages, added at the end of the book. Today inequalities playa significant role in all fields of mathematics, and they present a very active and attractive field of research. J. DIEUDONNE, in his book "Calcullnfinitesimal" (Paris 1968), attri buted special significance to inequalities, adopting the method of exposi tion characterized by "majorer, minorer, approcher". Since 1934 a multitude of papers devoted to inequalities have been published: in some of them new inequalities were discovered, in others classical inequalities ,vere sharpened or extended, various inequalities ,vere linked by finding their common source, while some other papers gave a large number of miscellaneous applications.
