Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solution and Electrolysis When we dissolve sodium chloride in water an absorp tion of heat is observed. That is to say, if both salt and water when separate are at the temperature of the air, after the solution is formed its temperature is lower. On the other hand caustic potash gives an evolution of heat on dissolving and the temperature rises. During solution there are usually changes in volume. In all but rare cases contraction occurs, and the volume of the resultant solution is less than the sum of the volumes of the solvent and the substance dissolved, or solvend. The boiling point of a salt solution is higher than that of pure water; and when it is remembered that a liquid boils when the pressure of its vapour is equal to the atmospheric pressure acting on it, we see at once that this statement is equivalent to saying that the vapour pressure of water is reduced by the dissolved salt. The steam which comes off however is the steam of pure water and will be found to assume the temperature at which pure water boils. Thermometers are graduated by marking on them the places at which the mercury stands at the freezing point and boiling point of water. It will be now seen why it is necessary during the latter operation to put the instrument in the steam and not in the water, which may contain impurities and be consequently boiling at a temperature slightly above 100 C. - its normal boiling point. Closely connected with this lowering of the vapour pressure is the lowering of the freezing point also pro duced by the substance in solution. Thus salt water does not freeze at a temperature low enough to solidify fresh water. Here again it is important to observe that the ice frozen out is the ice of pure water. Sometimes, par ticularly if the process of freezing has been rapid, particles of solid salt are shut in by the ice, and therefore redissolve when it is melted, but they are quite distinctly separated from the solid ice and never crystallize out in combination with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Knowledge of the Electrolysis of Aqueous Solutions of Vanadium Salts Previous to 1882, very little electrolytic work was done on vana dium, but since then much interest has developed in this field. Electrolytic processes may be divided into those using an aqueous electrolyte, and (2) those using a non-aqueous or fused electrolyte. The electrolytic processes for obtaining metallic vanadium, using either aqueous or fused electrolytes, are very few, and most are of theoretical value only. The literature on the subject is very scant, and much of the data reported lacks accuracy. It is the object of this thesis to determine whether or not it is possible to obtain metallic vanadium from aqueous solutions of its salts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Electrolytic Methods of Analysis In the preparation of the English translation of Dr. Neumann's work on Electrolytic Methods of Analysis a comparatively small number of alterations or corrections have been found necessary; and the Author's consent has been in every case obtained for the few that have been made. The portion of the original work dealing with primary and secondary batteries, the dynamo, and the thermo-pile has been omitted. The electro-chemical equivalents have been recalculated upon the most reliable figures for the atomic weights of the elements. The Translator has added a few notes to the original text where such notes were considered to be of utility. These notes are in every case included in square brackets, in order to distinguish them from the original text. The translation is provided with a fairly complete subject index, and a name index, which it is believed will increase the value of the book to those engaged in original research in this branch of chemistry. With regard to the question of current supply, it may be pointed out that city and town laboratories can obtain the current required from the supply mains of the electric-lighting companies. The installation of small transformers for reducing the current voltage to five volts, and where necessary for converting alternating currents into direct ones, is a comparatively simple matter. When continuous work is contemplated, the addition of one or two storage batteries would be requisite. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Refining by Electrolysis The electrolytic refining of lead bullion has now become an established metallurgical process, with further extensions confidently expected to come from time to time. Lead is almost an ideal metal to refine electrolytically, because its electrochemical equivalent is very high, and hence the power cost is small, and the depositing tanks are relatively smaller or fewer than for other common metals. Its casting into anodes is especially easy, and it stands high enough in the electrochemical scale to leave its impurities almost entirely in the anode slime, as metals, so there is no appreciable contamination of the electrolyte. The contained information is the result of a number of years of study, experiment and practical work, and is published in the hope that it will save those who may be interested in lead refining practice or its improvement the repetition of experiments already performed, and give them the benefit of the work already done by others and myself. Some space has been devoted to theoretical discussions of conductivity of electrolyte, etc., which I thought would be useful and instructive. The variety of methods of slime treatment which are discussed in Chapter II, may seem unnecessarily large from the practical standpoint, though I myself believe it is desirable to treat them at the length I have. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Chemicals by Electrolysis The idea of a series of books on Electro-Chemistry emanated not from me, but from Messrs. Constable. Some years back I wrote for them a book called "Practical Electro-Chemistry," intended to cover a great part of the ground of knowledge then extant. Fortunately, knowledge has a habit of growing and of propagating its kind, and my book, in consequence of this, became a "back number." The subject of Electro-Chemistry is so ramified and specialized that it was impossible for one man to make a survey of the whole field. This fact is the genesis of the present series in which those who have accurate and intimate knowledge of the various branches of electro-chemistry have undertaken the work for which they are particularly qualified. It will be readily understood that, as the series of books was started at an early period of the war, many contributors were engaged in work of national and primary importance, and were unable, however willing, to apply themselves at the moment to exacting literary work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches in Physical Chemistry In the simpler cases, at all events, these changes of concentration are susceptible of mathematical treatment; Weber and Sand have considered the case of electrolysis with constant currents, and War burg has deduced an equation for the stationary state on electrolysis with a sinusoidal current through a diffusion layer of infinite length. The present paper deals with the whole problem in a systematic manner, and includes the discussion of electrolysis with intermittent, successive, and sinusoidal currents, without restrictions as to the dura tion of the electrolysis or the length of the column of liquid through which the diffusion takes place. The increasing application of the oscillo graph to the study of instantaneous conditions at the electrode led us to pay particular attention to the changes which take place Wltl'lln the first fraction of a second after throwing on the current, while Richards' work on electrolysis with alternating currents, followed by the interesting experiments of leblanc and of Reichenstein with copper electrodes in cyanide solutions, induced us to include the case of non-instantaneous chemical reactions between the primary pro ducts of electrolysis and the other constituents of the solution. Ex perimental methods are suggested by which, in suitable cases, the velocity constants of such reactions might be determined. (jour. Phys. Chem. 14, pp. 816 - 884. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrolysis and Electrosynthesis of Organic Compounds In the two and a half years that have passed since the appearance of the first edition of the present work, the application of the electric current in organic chemistry has undergone such a marked development that the book in its original form could no longer claim to give an adequate idea of our present knowledge of organic electrolysis and electrosynthesis. During these last two years in particular a series of important researches which systematically invade this new field of chemistry have been brought out in rapid succession. Since I am now engaged in the preparation of a new German edition, the desire of Dr. H. W. F. Lorenz to translate the book affords an excellent opportunity for presenting the revised and completed edition directly to his fellow countrymen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Analysis by Electrolysis: Revised English Translation of the Fifth German Edition It is necessary, therefore, to find out, on the basis of the theory of electricity, what happens when an electric current is passed through any given solution. If the wires from the positive and negative poles of a suitable source of current are each connected with separate pieces of plati num foil and the two pieces of foil are suspended a slight distance apart in a sugar solution or in chloroform, it will be found, by plac ing a galvanoscope or ammeter in the circuit between one of the poles and the wire that leads to the liquid, that only a very weak electric current is flowing. If, however, the pieces of platinum foil, called the electrodes, are suspended in dilute sulphuric acid, in dilute caustic soda, or in a solution of sodium chloride, the instrument Will then Show the passage of a stronger electric current. The solutions of these substances conduct electricity. On the basis of their behavior toward the current, all soluble substances (and with these only shall we concern ourselves) can be divided into those which are good conductors and those which are not. Those substances which, in aqueous solution, conduct electricity are called electrolytes; to this class belong most acids, most bases, and nearly all salts, whether organic or inorganic in nature, and it is With these that electro-analysis is concerned.
