Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures presented during the NATO/ASI conducted in Pullman, Washington, July 9-18, 1989. This is the third in a series of NATO/ASIs on transport phenomena in porous media. The first two, which took place at Newark, Delaware in 1982 and 1985, are devoted to various topics related to the Fundamentals of Transport Processes in Porous Media. The contents of the books resulting from previous NATO/ASIs are given at the end of this book. Transport of extensive quantities such as mass of a fluid phase, mass of chemical species carried by a fluid phase, energy and electric charge in porous media, as encountered in a large variety of engineering disciplines, is an emerging interdisciplinary field. The groundwater flow, the simultaneous flow of gas, oil and water in petroleum reservoirs, the movement and accumulation of pollutants in the saturated and unsaturated subsurface zones, thermal energy storage in reservoirs, land subsidence in response to charges in overburden loads, or to pumping of fluids from underground formations, wave propagation in seismic investigations or as produced by earthquakes, chemical reactors, water flow through sand filters and the movement of fluids through kidneys, may serve as examples of fields in which the theory of transport in porous media is employed.

Download or read book Flow in Porous Media written by J. Douglas and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Douglas, Jr.' These proceedings reflect some of the thoughts expressed at the Oberwolfach Con ference on Porous Media held June 21-27, 1992, organized by Jim Douglas, Jr., Ulrich Hornung, and Cornelius J, van Duijn. Forty-five scientists attended the conference, and about thirty papers were presented. Fourteen manuscripts were submitted for the proceedings and are incorporated in this volume; they cover a number of aspects of flow and transport in porous media. Indeed, there are 223 individual references in the fourteen papers, but fewer than fifteen are cited in more than one paper. The papers appear in alphabetical order (on the basis of the first author). A brief introduction to each paper is given below. Allen and Curran consider a variety of questions related to the simulation of ground water contamination. Accurate water velocities are essential for acceptable results, and the authors apply mixed finite elements to the pressure equation to obtain these ve locities. Since fine grids are required to resolve heterogenei ties, standard iterative procedures are too slow for practical simulation; the authors introduce a parallelizable, multigrid-based it.erative scheme for the lowest order Raviart-Thomas mixed method. Contaminant transport is approximated through a finite element collocation procedure, and an alternating-direction, modified method of characteristics technique is employed to time-step the simulation. Computational experiments carried out on an nCube 2 computer.
Book Synopsis The Physics of Fluids in Hierarchical Porous Media: Angstroms to Miles by : John H. Cushman
Download or read book The Physics of Fluids in Hierarchical Porous Media: Angstroms to Miles written by John H. Cushman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porous media are ubiquitous throughout nature and in many modern technologies. Because of their omnipresent nature, porous media are studied to one degree or another in almost all branches of science and engineering. This text is an outgrowth of a two-semester graduate course on multiscale porous media offered to students in applied math, physics, chemistry, engineering (civil, chemical, mechanical, agricultural), and environmental and soil science. The text is largely based on Dr Cushmans' groups efforts to build a rational approach to studying porous media over a hierarchy of spatial and temporal scales. No other text covers porous media on scales ranging from angstroms to miles. Nor does any other text develop and use such a diversity of tools for their study. The text is designed to be self-contained, as it presents all relevant mathematical and physical constructs.

Download or read book Distributed Hydrological Modelling written by Michael B. Abbott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the task of the engineer, as of any other professional person, to do everything that is reasonably possible to analyse the difficulties with which his or her client is confronted, and on this basis to design solutions and implement these in practice. The distributed hydrological model is, correspondingly, the means for doing everything that is reasonably possible - of mobilising as much data and testing it with as much knowledge as is economically feasible - for the purpose of analysing problems and of designing and implementing remedial measures in the case of difficulties arising within the hydrological cycle. Thus the aim of distributed hydrologic modelling is to make the fullest use of cartographic data, of geological data, of satellite data, of stream discharge measurements, of borehole data, of observations of crops and other vegetation, of historical records of floods and droughts, and indeed of everything else that has ever been recorded or remembered, and then to apply to this everything that is known about meteorology, plant physiology, soil physics, hydrogeology, sediment transport and everything else that is relevant within this context. Of course, no matter how much data we have and no matter how much we know, it will never be enough to treat some problems and some situations, but still we can aim in this way to do the best that we possibly can.

Book Synopsis Stochastic Analysis Of Flow And Solute Transport In Heterogeneous Porous Media Using Perturbation Approach by :
Download or read book Stochastic Analysis Of Flow And Solute Transport In Heterogeneous Porous Media Using Perturbation Approach written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of flow and solute transport problem in porous media are affected by uncertainty inbuilt both in boundary conditions and spatial variability in system parameters. The experimental investigation reveals that the parameters may vary in various scales by several orders. These affect the solute plume characteristics in field-scale problem and cause uncertainty in the prediction of concentration. The main focus of the present thesis is to analyze the probabilistic behavior of solute concentration in three dimensional(3-D) heterogeneous porous media. The framework for the probabilistic analysis has been developed using perturbation approach for both spectral based analytical and finite element based numerical method. The results of the probabilistic analysis are presented either in terms of solute plume characteristics or prediction uncertainty of the concentration. After providing a brief introduction on the role of stochastic analysis in subsurface hydrology in chapter 1, a detailed review of the literature is presented to establish the existing state-of-art in the research on the probabilistic analysis of flow and transport in simple and complex heterogeneous porous media in chapter 2. The literature review is mainly focused on the methods of solution of the stochastic differential equation. Perturbation based spectral method is often used for probabilistic analysis of flow and solute transport problem. Using this analytical method a nonlocal equation is solved to derive the expression of the spatial plume moments. The spatial plume moments represent the solute movement, spreading in an average sense. In chapter 3 of the present thesis, local dispersivity if also assumed to be random space function along with hydraulic conductivity. For various correlation coefficients of the random parameters, the results in terms of the field scale effective dispersivity are presented to demonstrate the effect of local dispersivity variation in space. The randomness of local.
