Book excerpt: This report assesses activities in the agriculture sector in the Solomon Islands – including activities funded by development partners and the private sector, as well as activities across subsectors and export-oriented production – in order to identify policy activities and current status of key agricultural indicators. It also provides information to inform a strategic sectoral plan, which will include gaps and opportunities for future development and sectoral growth. The stocktake was designed to identify key constraints and opportunities, and to inform the government, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) in further developing strategic direction and assist them to capitalize on the support of development partners.

Book excerpt: This report highlights three main pathways for changing the food system based on consultations and analysis. The pathways include strengthening and connecting rural food systems, enhancing the national policy environment, and advocating for healthy food environments that are accessible, affordable, and convenient. These pathways operate on different scales, ranging from provincial to national inward and outward-looking approaches, but they are interconnected and interact in significant ways. To achieve national prosperity, it is important to prioritize rural and urban areas and establish strong connections between them. The report recognizes areas of strength that are already in place and emphasizes the need to strengthen them further to maintain their positive trajectory.

Book excerpt: This study presents an extensive analysis of the research landscape concerning the application of computational and mathematical techniques in cocoa farming from 2000 to 2020. The methodology comprises a two-stage process: a bibliometric analysis of 1,886 peer-reviewed documents and a concept-centric review of 734 investigations explicitly focused on cocoa or its derived products. The main findings reveal contributions from various scientific disciplines, such as Chemistry, Biology, Social Sciences, Econometrics and Finance, Health, and Computer Science. The study proposes a Cocoa Sustainable Food Value Chain framework, emphasizing research applications in genetic improvement, machinery optimization, food composition health implications, and crop yield enhancement. An emerging research area focuses on developing machine learning techniques to address challenges in cocoa farming, such as post-production, bean quality, cocoa ripeness, pod counting, crop yield estimation, bean fermentation optimization, organoleptic recognition, and cocoa machinery industrialization. The study uncovers four research gaps related to computational and mathematical technique implementations that could provide value to smallholder cocoa farmers: (i) optimal cocoa aggregation and distribution management, (ii) development of user-friendly high-tech solutions, (iii) agricultural technology adoption, and (iv) evaluation of policy impacts. This research makes three significant contributions to the body of knowledge. First, it expands agri-food supply chain concepts by incorporating sustainability and proposing a theoretical framework tailored to the cocoa extended value chain. Second, it identifies the underdevelopment of ICT and IoT solutions supporting computational and mathematical techniques for cocoa production management. Third, it underscores the necessity to develop and transfer high-tech tools to enhance Good Agricultural Practices. This research emphasizes that the cocoa food core chain requires a digital transformation centered on smallholder farmers to improve the Cocoa Sustainable Food Value Chain.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 1.0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Ressourcenökonomie), language: English, abstract: About two-thirds of the Sierra Leonean population depends on agricultural activities for their livelihood. Agriculture in Sierra Leone is diverse but the highest potential for increasing rural income is attached to cocoa production. Cocoa producers in the Eastern region have an option to sell their cocoa to cooperatives, companies, petty traders, resident and Lebanese buyers. Producer marketing decision is key to breaking a vicious circle of low quality, prices and incentives that hinder overall development in the sector and poverty alleviation. The purpose of this study was therefore to better understand marketing behaviour of cocoa producers in Sierra Leone with the help of New Institutional Economics. In this study, the concept of Power Resources was employed and complemented by a Value Chain Analysis to study factors which influence cocoa marketing decisions. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were applied. First, qualitative research activities included 20 Focus Group Discussions with farmers in selected communities in the Eastern province. The research team then returned to respective communities to conduct questionnaires with 100 farmers. Considering the twelve Power Resources investigated in greater detail showed that those related to transaction costs, risks, exit possibilities, sanction power and credibility affect marketing decisions the most. The results revealed that farmers are encouraged to sell to cooperatives because of relatively lower transaction costs, risks and credible commitments. It was further found that farmers are discouraged to sell to petty traders and Lebanese buyers amongst others because of the lack of market information, the fear of being cheated and high price risks. Farmers were further found to face comparably high exit costs in transactions with cooperatives, companies and Lebanese buyers because of strong dependency and parallel business relations as well as unavailability of alternative market outlets. Furthermore, it was discovered that farmers are poorly endowed in sanction power and therefore prefer to sell to resident buyers who could be sued to the traditional chiefs in case of transaction problems. Overall, the principal conclusion was that Power Resource endowments in the Sierra Leone cocoa market encourage producers to sell to cooperatives while discouraging farmers to sell to petty traders and Lebanese buyers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cocoa industry is a global multi-billion dollar industry that faces numerous challenges at the farm level. Cocoa is largely grown on smallholder farms in equatorial Africa, which face poverty, declining productivity, volatile prices and lack of funding for investment, as well as human rights and environmental issues. Contract-farming is a value chain model that has been proposed to address many of the challenges faced by cocoa farmers. This paper provides an overview of the cocoa industry, including past and current initiatives to address issues and inequities in the cocoa market, and an overview of current research on contract-farming of cocoa, including an examination of three chocolate companies that source cocoa in Africa using a contract-farming business model: Theo Chocolate (Democratic Republic of Congo), Divine Chocolate (Ghana), and Madécasse (Madagascar). This research finds that contract-farming does offer cocoa farmers the opportunity to receive a higher price point for cocoa, and is more beneficial than industry sustainability programs. There are significant gaps in the research into contract-farming, however, and it is not clear how contract-farming impacts sustainable economic development in the longer term, even when farmers obtain a higher price point for cocoa. Contract-farming may increase risks associated with land tenure insecurity, marginalization of women, and crop monoculture; however, contract-farming can be carried out in a way that mitigates these risks.

Book excerpt: This study examines whether major Nigerian export firms exert market power over Nigerian cocoa farmers in the form of incomplete price transmission. A common indicator of efficient and functioning markets is the presence of a high level of market integration, while a lack of integration could be an indication of private traders’ market power. This study pays special attention to export firms’ pricing behavior in the post-liberalization period. Our analyses are based on (i) monthly firm-level price data from major Nigerian cocoa beans exporting companies and (ii) monthly farm gate prices between 1986 and 2009.

Book excerpt: The cyclical boom-to-recession nature of the economics of cocoa supply is a major problem for the international cocoa industry - and especially for countries whose economies depend on cocoa exports. Only through an understanding of the dynamics of cocoa cycles can policy decisions be made through the various phases of supply cycles. Based on a major international cocoa conference, this book presents seventeen edited papers from leading experts, making a major contribution to that understanding. It explains the powerful economic, social and political factors which impact on the cocoa economy. It shows the laws of cocoa supply are closely linked to environmental, ecological and institutional factors.
