Book excerpt: Research is being conducted on the formation of hydrates, waxes, asphaltenes and diamondoids in natural gas. The objective is to study the kinetics of such systems by measuring the rates of formation and dissolution of such solids. These measurements will result in correlations based upon mass and heat transfer in flowing systems. Currently, the apparatus needed for such measurements has been calibrated and a number of experimental measurements have been made including the rates of hydrate formation and the solubility of diamondoids in some gases. Dynthesis of diamantane and physical property measurements of adamantane and diamantane have been completed.

Book excerpt: Few experimental data are available for gas hydrate equilibrium conditions in the presence of mixed electrolytes and/or methanol. In the first three years of this four-year project, experimental hydrate equilibrium data on propane and two mixtures of methane and carbon dioxide in several solutions containing electrolytes and methanol were obtained in our laboratory. In addition, a discrepancy in the literature on the experimental data for propane hydrates in 10 mass percent NaCl solution was resolved by (i) obtaining fresh data in our laboratory using two different experimental methods and by (ii) comparing the experimental data with predictions using a thermodynamically rigorous method. The existing methods for predicting hydrate equilibrium conditions are not suitable for systems containing mixed electrolytes and mixed solvents. Ten thermodynamic models to compute component activities in such solutions were surveyed. The activities are needed for hydrate equilibrium computations. Of these, two models were integrated with a hydrate equilibrium prediction method. One model was found to be satisfactory for engineering calculations. Besides thermodynamics, a good understanding of the kinetics of hydrate formation and decomposition is also essential. Experimental kinetic data on hydrate nucleation were successfully modelled. A unified approach for describing the kinetics of hydrate nucleation, growth and decomposition was presented.

Book excerpt: The fundamental task of this project is to develop a model of hydrate necleation, metastability and to determine, to the extent possible, the fundamental kinetics of hydrate formation and decomposition. For this study, we have chosen to examine systems containing mixtures of methane with propane, nitrogen and other gases with particular emphasis on measuring the vapor composition and determination of the heat of formation (using the differential heat flux calorimeter).

Asphaltene deposition is one of such obstructions which can significantly decrease the rate of oil production. This book offers concise yet thorough coverage of the complex problem of asphaltene precipitation and deposition in oil production. It covers fundamentals of chemistry, stabilization theories and mechanistic approaches of asphaltene behavior at high temperature and pressure. Asphaltene Deposition: Fundamentals, Prediction, Prevention, and Remediation explains techniques for experimental determination of asphaltene precipitation and deposition and different modeling tools available to forecast the occurrence and magnitude of asphaltene deposition in a given oil field. It discusses strategies for mitigation of asphaltene deposition using chemical inhibition and corresponding challenges, best practices for asphaltene remediation, current research, and case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precipitation and deposition of solids are a major challenge in the production of oil and gas. Flow assurance solids are formed because of unavoidable changes in temperature, pressure and composition of the oil-gas-water flowstream, from reservoir conditions to processing conditions. The advent of subsea production and the increased exploitation of heavy crudes have made flow assurance issues dominant in ensuring efficient and safe exploitation of hydrocarbon assets. Five troublesome flow assurance solids are described in the book: asphaltene, paraffin wax, natural gas hydrate, naphthenate and inorganic scale. These big-five solids are presented in stand-alone chapters. Each chapter is designed to be readable without clutter. Derivations of equations and descriptions of supporting details are given in several appendices. The book is intended for professional engineers and natural scientist working in E&P companies, engineering companies, service companies and specialized companies. An understanding of the big-five solids is required throughout the lifetime of oil and gas assets, from early development to abandonment. The technical, safety and environmental risks associated with deposition problems in near-wellbore formations, production tubing, wellhead equipment, flowlines and processing facilities, are relevant for decisions in the oil and gas industry and in outside regulatory and financial entities.

Book excerpt: The prevention of solids formation and their deposition are major challenges to design and operate any subsea hydrocarbon production systems. One of the most challenging issues is the management of paraffin/wax. As the water depth increases, at the low temperatures of subsea conditions, hydrocarbons may precipitate as wax, which can solidify and restrict the flow. During shutdown of a subsea production system wax gel may form and solidify when a crude oil cools below its pour point causing operational problems from downhole to the processing facilities. The purpose of this chapter is to address the paraffin/wax formation and deposition issues to properly design a subsea production system consisting of pipe-in-pipe flowline and flexible riser under deepwater environment. A field specific example is presented to manage the wax formation/deposition and prevent paraffin/wax deposition risks in an effective way during the normal and the shut-in operations of the subsea production system. This study illustrates that the subsea hardware, such as water stop and equipment valves, along with the flowline, riser and jumper should be sufficiently insulated in order to prevent any cold spots in the production system, and achieve sufficient cooldown time for the shut-in operations.

Book excerpt: This title covers a wide range of topics related to the Pressure Volume Temperature (PVT) behavior of complex hydrocarbon systems and documents the ability of Equations of State (EOS) in modeling their behavior. The main objective of this book is to provide the practicing engineer and engineering student with tools needed to solve problems that require a description of the PVT of hydrocarbon systems from their compositions. Because of the dramatic evolution in computational capabilities, petroleum engineers can now study such phenomena as the development of miscibility during gas injection, compositional gradient as a function of depth and the behavior near critical hydrocarbon systems with more sophisticated EOS models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fouling in Refineries is an important and ongoing problem that directly affects energy efficiency resulting in increased costs, production losses, and even unit shutdown, requiring costly expenditures to clean up equipment and return capacity to positive levels. This text addresses this common challenge for the hydrocarbon processing community within each unit of the refinery. As refineries today face a greater challenge of accepting harder to process heavier crudes and the ongoing flow of the lighter shale oil feedstocks, resulting in bigger challenges to balance product stability within their process equipment, this text seeks to inform all relative refinery personnel on how to monitor fouling, characterize the deposits, and follow all available treatments. With basic modeling and chemistry of fouling and each unit covered, users will learn how to operate at maximum production rates and elongate the efficiency of their refinery's capacity. - Presents an understanding of the breakdown of fouling per refinery unit, including distillation and coking units - Provides all the factors, crude types, and refining blends that cause fouling, especially the unconventional feedstocks and high acid crudes used today - Helps users develop an analysis-based treatment and control strategy that empowers them to operate refinery equipment at a level that prevents fouling from occurring
