Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental task of this project is to develop a model of hydrate necleation, metastability and to determine, to the extent possible, the fundamental kinetics of hydrate formation and decomposition. For this study, we have chosen to examine systems containing mixtures of methane with propane, nitrogen and other gases with particular emphasis on measuring the vapor composition and determination of the heat of formation (using the differential heat flux calorimeter).

Book excerpt: Research is being conducted on the formation of hydrates, waxes, asphaltenes and diamondoids in natural gas. The objective is to study the kinetics of such systems by measuring the rates of formation and dissolution of such solids. These measurements will result in correlations based upon mass and heat transfer in flowing systems. Currently, the apparatus needed for such measurements has been calibrated and a number of experimental measurements have been made including the rates of hydrate formation and the solubility of diamondoids in some gases. Dynthesis of diamantane and physical property measurements of adamantane and diamantane have been completed.
Book Synopsis Hydrate Formation and Deposition in Natural Gas Flow Line by : Esam Jassim

This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbon gases that occur in petroleum deposits. It is principally composed of methane and varying quantities of ethane, propane, and heavier hydrocarbons, and is used as a fuel and in the manufacture of organic compounds. These hydrocarbon components exist in multiple phases according to changes in temperature, pressure and composition. Under certain conditions solids may also precipitate, resulting in changes to the fluid properties. Macroscopically, hydrate structures appear similar to ice or snow, but unlike ice hydrates can be stable at temperatures above 0 C. The interest in hydrates has significantly increased because of their potential as a separating agent and as a storage vehicle. Gas hydrates found in deep seas and permafrost provide a large amount of methane. Other positive applications include carbon dioxide sequestration, separation and natural gas storage. In return, the occurrence of such solids may lead to severe problems in oil and gas production systems. Besides, its physical properties may include an important bearing on flow assurance and safety matters, posing a major risk in all high-pressure oil and natural gas transport lines."
Book Synopsis Sediment-hosted Gas Hydrates by : D. Long
Download or read book Sediment-hosted Gas Hydrates written by D. Long and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2009 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much interest in gas hydrates in relation to their potential role as an important driver for climate change and as a major new energy source; however, many questions remain, not least the size of the global hydrate budget. Much of the current uncertainty centres on how hydrates are physically stored in sediments at a range of scales. This volume details advances in our understanding of sediment-hosted hydrates, and contains papers covering a range of studies of real and artificial sediments containing both methane hydrates and CO2 hydrates. The papers include an examination of the techniques used to locate, sample and characterize hydrates from natural, methane-rich systems, so as to understand them better. Other contributions consider the nature and stability of synthetic hydrates formed in the laboratory, which in turn improve our ability to make accurate predictive models.

Book excerpt: Few experimental data are available for gas hydrate equilibrium conditions in the presence of mixed electrolytes and/or methanol. In the first three years of this four-year project, experimental hydrate equilibrium data on propane and two mixtures of methane and carbon dioxide in several solutions containing electrolytes and methanol were obtained in our laboratory. In addition, a discrepancy in the literature on the experimental data for propane hydrates in 10 mass percent NaCl solution was resolved by (i) obtaining fresh data in our laboratory using two different experimental methods and by (ii) comparing the experimental data with predictions using a thermodynamically rigorous method. The existing methods for predicting hydrate equilibrium conditions are not suitable for systems containing mixed electrolytes and mixed solvents. Ten thermodynamic models to compute component activities in such solutions were surveyed. The activities are needed for hydrate equilibrium computations. Of these, two models were integrated with a hydrate equilibrium prediction method. One model was found to be satisfactory for engineering calculations. Besides thermodynamics, a good understanding of the kinetics of hydrate formation and decomposition is also essential. Experimental kinetic data on hydrate nucleation were successfully modelled. A unified approach for describing the kinetics of hydrate nucleation, growth and decomposition was presented.

Book Synopsis Flow Assurance Solids in Oil and Gas Production by : Jon Steinar Gudmundsson
Download or read book Flow Assurance Solids in Oil and Gas Production written by Jon Steinar Gudmundsson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precipitation and deposition of solids are a major challenge in the production of oil and gas. Flow assurance solids are formed because of unavoidable changes in temperature, pressure and composition of the oil-gas-water flowstream, from reservoir conditions to processing conditions. The advent of subsea production and the increased exploitation of heavy crudes have made flow assurance issues dominant in ensuring efficient and safe exploitation of hydrocarbon assets. Five troublesome flow assurance solids are described in the book: asphaltene, paraffin wax, natural gas hydrate, naphthenate and inorganic scale. These big-five solids are presented in stand-alone chapters. Each chapter is designed to be readable without clutter. Derivations of equations and descriptions of supporting details are given in several appendices. The book is intended for professional engineers and natural scientist working in E&P companies, engineering companies, service companies and specialized companies. An understanding of the big-five solids is required throughout the lifetime of oil and gas assets, from early development to abandonment. The technical, safety and environmental risks associated with deposition problems in near-wellbore formations, production tubing, wellhead equipment, flowlines and processing facilities, are relevant for decisions in the oil and gas industry and in outside regulatory and financial entities.
