Book excerpt: The need for sustainable production of everyday materials in addition to declining reserves of petroleum-based feedstocks has motivated research into the production of renewable aromatic chemicals from biomass. We have proposed a multistep pathway to produce renewable p-xylene from lignocellulosic biomass using heterogeneous catalysts. The pathway includes formation of glucose by saccharification of cellulose, isomerization of glucose into fructose, dehydration/hydrogenolysis for production of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), and final step for producing p-xylene from reacting DMF with ethylene. Lewis acid zeolite catalysts (e.g. Sn-BEA, a tin containing molecular sieve with zeolite BEA structure) exhibited critical roles in the pathway because of its excellent catalytic activity for the conversion of glucose into fructose by intramolecular hydride transfer reaction and the production of p-xylene from DMF by cycloaddition/dehydration reactions. However, the development of Sn-BEA is a grand challenge due to the lengthy crystallization time (up to 40 days) and unknown structure of acid site. In this work, a highly reproducible seeded growth approach was invented to significantly shorten the crystallization time. It is demonstrated that the seed crystals effectively reduce the induction time of crystallization and lower the energy barrier by bypassing the nucleation stage. Crystallization kinetic studies reveal the highly crystalline Sn-BEA catalyst can be obtained in 3 hours at 200 °C with similar catalytic activity in isomerization reaction of glucose compared to conventional Sn-BEA. The discovery is important for rational synthesis of heteroatom containing zeolites. Zr-, Sn-, and Ti-BEA Lewis acid zeolite catalysts were employed in production of p-xylene from DMF and ethylene. It was found that these Lewis acid catalysts are able to catalyze the tandem reaction consisting of Diels-Alder cycloaddition and dehydration reactions to form p-xylene. Zr-BEA shows the best performance with improved recalcitrance to deactivation compared to Brønsted acid zeolite catalyst (Al-BEA), reaching 76 % yield to p-xylene at 99 % conversion of DMF. Zr-BEA also features high p-xylene production rate due to its catalytic activity for both cycloaddition and dehydration reactions. The results provide an approach to rational develop bi-functional (Lewis+Brønsted acids) catalysts for the tandem reaction pathway to efficiently produce p-xylene and many other aromatics.

In biorefinery, chemical transformation of polymers to valuable compounds has attracted worldwide interest for building sustainable societies. First, the current situation of this hot research area has been summarized well in the general introduction of the thesis, which helps readers to become familiar with this topic. Next, the author explains high-yielding production of glucose from cellulose by using an alkali-activated carbon as a catalyst, resulting in a yield of glucose as high as 88%, which is one of the highest yields ever reported. The characterization of carbon materials has indicated that weak acid sites on the catalyst promote the reaction, which is markedly different from reported catalytic systems that require strong acids. In addition, the first catalytic transformation of chitin with retention of N-acetyl groups has been developed. The combination of mechanocatalytic hydrolysis and thermal solvolysis enables the production of N-acetylated monomers in good yields of up to 70%. The catalytic systems demonstrated in this thesis are unique in the fields of both chemistry and chemical engineering, and their high efficiencies can contribute to green and sustainable chemistry in the future. Meanwhile, mechanistic studies based on characterization, thermodynamics, kinetics, and model reactions have also been performed to reveal the roles of catalysts during the reactions. The results will be helpful for readers to design and develop new catalysts and reaction systems.

Book excerpt: Biomass, being the only renewable source of carbon, has the potential to serve as a sustainable platform for the production of energy and chemicals, in this era of diminishing supplies of fossil fuels. The conversion of lignocellulose to fuels and chemicals requires the effective utilization of the hemicellulose and cellulose portions. Catalytic processing strategies for these two portions were developed and studied through key platform molecules. First, catalytic processing of two cellulose-derived intermediates, glucose and levulinic acid, were investigated. As shown previously, glucose (and sorbitol) could be converted over PtRe/C to monofunctional molecules (alcohols, ketones, carboxylic acids and heterocycles), which could then be upgraded by consecutive C-C coupling reaction steps, i.e., ketonization and aldol condensation, to fuel grade alkanes. In this thesis, the aldol condensation step was studied over Pd dispersed ceria-zirconia mixed oxide catalysts. Among the mixed oxides, Pd/ZrO2 displayed the highest activity, as well as good resistance to inhibition by CO2 and water, two by-products of ketonization. Therefore, Pd/ZrO2 allowed for integration of aldol condensation/hydrogenation step with ketonization in a single reactor dual-bed system. As an alternative, cellulose can be processed through the intermediate formation of levulinic acid. A valuable fuel-precursor, -valerolactone, was obtained from levulinic acid via the formation of levulinate and formate esters for improved management of sulfuric acid. The esters were obtained from the corresponding acids by a reactive extraction step using butene. Two alternative hemicellulose processing strategies were also developed for the production of furfural. In the first strategy, hemicellulose-derived xylose is converted to furfural in a biphasic system with a novel solvent (2-sec-butyl-phenol, SBP) and use of mineral acids. Increased concentrations of furfural compared to the feed could be obtained due to the exceptionally high partition coefficient of furfural in the SBP-water biphasic system. An alternative strategy involves the conversion of xylose in a monophasic system with another novel green solvent (γ-valerolactone) using solid acid catalysts (i.e., H-mordenite) with high yields. Importantly, the furfural degradation reactions were found to be dominated by condensation reactions, rates of which could be decreased significantly when γ-valerolactone was used as the solvent instead of water.
