This collection in no way represents an exhaustive record of the Army's months in France, but it is certainly worthy of serious consideration and thoughtful review by students of military history and strategy and will serve as a useful jumping off point for any earnest scholarship on the war. --from Foreword by William A Stofft.

Book excerpt: War War I Veterans of Transylvania County, NC An article appeared in the Brevard News April 2, 1920 asking the soldiers of World War I to share their war experiences and a photograph for a souvenir book. No record can be found of such a book having been printed. Ninety-three years later a book honoring World War I soldiers of Transylvania County, NC is available. Jan Plemmons, compiler, has taken a slightly different format than the proposed 1920 book. There will be no "bloody war battles " presented, only information about the soldiers and "interesting" facts of the United States' participation in the war. The very first challenge for this publication was to identify the subjects who were in the military between April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1918. There is no source for ONE COMPLETE list. The list of 470 individual soldiers was compiled from many sources. The primary source of the soldiers' records came from the World War I Service Record Cards (SRC). Congress ordered the Adjutant General of the United States to provide each state with a statement of service from the War Department for each individual who served in the U.S. Army during the war. Unfortunately, there is not a Service Record Card for each soldier. Additional lists were created from the 1930 Census that collected military service data, Frankie Monteith's Transylvania County, North Carolina Cemetery Survey, and the World War I files in the NC Room, Transylvania County Library. The final source of names came from Brevard News (present Transylvania Times) articles printed between 1917 and 1919. The men were thoroughly researched using the birth records, death certificates, marriage records, census records, discharge papers, obituaries, Transylvania County, NC heritage books, the Internet and personal accounts of people who knew them.
Book Synopsis Yesterday There Was Glory by : Gerald Andrew Howell
Download or read book Yesterday There Was Glory written by Gerald Andrew Howell and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1946, World War I veteran and self-described “buck private in the rear rank” Gerald Andrew Howell finished a memoir of the experiences of his squad from the 39th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, and their “moments of horror, tragedy, humor, amour, [and] promiscuity” in Europe. This was “the old Army as it used to be,” Howell explains—the saga of the “down-trodden doughboy.” A few months later Howell was dead, his manuscript unpublished. Jeffrey Patrick discovered the memoir and the author’s correspondence with publishers and took on the task of bringing it to publication at last. Yesterday There Was Glory is an unpretentious account of men at war, from training camp to the occupation of Germany. It includes graphic descriptions of the battlefield, of shell fire, gas attacks, and lice. “Between the attacks the men would lay in their wet holes and pray for relief. But no relief came,” Howell remembers. He recalls much more than the horrors of combat, however, chronicling the diverse collection of heroes, professional warriors, shirkers, and braggarts that made up the American Expeditionary Forces. Howell and his comrades longed for wounds that would allow them to escape the war, but resolutely engaged the Germans in hand-to-hand combat. They poked fun at their comrades, but were willing to share their last can of food. They endured difficult marches, pursued “mademoiselles” and “frauleins,” and even staged a “strike” to protest mistreatment by their officers. They were as “ribald as any soldiery in any army,” Howell admits, but “underneath this veneer, they were really patriotic, steadfast and sincere.” Patrick provides an editor’s introduction and annotations to explain terms and sources in the memoir. Howell’s account preserves the flavor of army life with conversations and banter in soldier language, including the uncensored doughboy profanity often heard but seldom recorded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wide-ranging story of Mennonite migration, theological diversity, and interaction with other Christian streams is distilled in this engaging volume, which tracks the history of Ontario Mennonites. Author Samuel J. Steiner writes that Ontario Mennonites and Amish are among the most diverse in the world—in their historical migrations and cultural roots, in their theological responses to the world around them, and in the various ways they have pursued their personal and communal salvation. In Search of Promised Lands describes the emergence and evolution of today’s 30-plus streams of Ontarians who have identified themselves as Mennonite or Amish from their arrival in Canada to the last decade. In Search of Promised Lands also considers how various Mennonite groups have adapted to or resisted evangelical fundamentalism and mainline Protestantism, and it identifies the nineteenth- and twentieth-century shifts toward personal salvation and away from submission to the church community. Volume 48 in the Studies in Anabaptist and Mennonite History series. Find out more about Ontario Mennonite and Amish history at the author’s blog.

Book Synopsis Portraits of Remembrance by : Margaret Hutchison
Download or read book Portraits of Remembrance written by Margaret Hutchison and published by War, Memory, and Culture. This book was released on 2020 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary collection of essays on fine art painting as it relates to the First World War and commemoration of the conflict Although photography and moving pictures achieved ubiquity during the First World War as technological means of recording history, the far more traditional medium of painting played a vital role in the visual culture of combatant nations. The public's appetite for the kind of up-close frontline action that snapshots and film footage could not yet provide resulted in a robust market for drawn or painted battle scenes. Painting also figured significantly in the formation of collective war memory after the armistice. Paintings became sites of memory in two ways: first, many governments and communities invested in freestanding panoramas or cycloramas that depicted the war or featured murals as components of even larger commemorative projects, and second, certain paintings, whether created by official artists or simply by those moved to do so, emerged over time as visual touchstones in the public's understanding of the war. Portraits of Remembrance: Painting, Memory, and the First World War examines the relationship between war painting and collective memory in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Great Britain, New Zealand, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and the United States. The paintings discussed vary tremendously, ranging from public murals and panoramas to works on a far more intimate scale, including modernist masterpieces and crowd-pleasing expressions of sentimentality or spiritualism. Contributors raise a host of topics in connection with the volume's overarching focus on memory, including national identity, constructions of gender, historical accuracy, issues of aesthetic taste, and connections between painting and literature, as well as other cultural forms.
