As such, it is an excellent touchstone for the comparative study of attitudes towards death and the afterlife, human relations to the divine, views of the cosmos, and the constitution of the fabric of society in different times and places. This collection of essays offers the first ever comparative approach to ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern traditions of lament. Beginning with the Sumerian and Hittite traditions, the volume moves on to examine Bronze Age iconographic representations of lamentation, Homeric lament, depictions of lament in Greek tragedy and parodic comedy, and finally lament in ancient Rome. The list of contributors includes such noted scholars as Richard Martin, Ian Rutherford, and Alison Keith. Lament comes at a time when the conclusions of the first wave of the study of lament-especially Greek lament-have received widespread acceptance, including the notions that lament is a female genre; that men risked feminization if they lamented; that there were efforts to control female lamentation; and that a lamenting woman was a powerful figure and a threat to the orderly functioning of the male public sphere. Lament revisits these issues by reexamining what kinds of functions the term lament can include, and by expanding the study of lament to other genres of literature, cultures, and periods in the ancient world. The studies included here reflect the variety of critical issues raised over the past 25 years, and as such, provide an overview of the history of critical thinking on the subject.

Book excerpt: In Liberal Barbarism, Erik Ringmar sets out to explain the 1860 destruction of Yuanmingyuan - the Chinese imperial palace north-west of Beijing - at the hands of British and French armies. Yuanmingyuan was the emperor's own theme-park, a perfect world, a vision of paradise, which housed one of the greatest collections of works of art ever assembled. The intellectual puzzle which the book addresses concerns why the Europeans, bent on "civilizing" the Chinese, engaged in this act of barbarism. The answer is provided through an analysis of the performative aspect of the confrontation between Europe and China, focusing on the differences in the way their respective international systems were conceptualized. Ringmar reveals that the destruction of Yuanmingyuan represented the Europeans' campaign to "shock and awe" the Chinese, thereby forcing them to give up their way of organizing international relations. The contradictions which the events of 1860 exemplify - the contradiction between civilization and barbarism - is a theme running through all European (and North American) relations with the rest of the world since, including, most recently, the US war in Iraq.

His still-definitive History of Kentucky (1937) was one of more than thirty books he would write or edit that dealt with Kentucky, the South, and the American frontier. In addition to his wide scholarly contributions, Clark devoted his life to the preservation of Kentucky's historical records. He began this crusade by collecting vast stores of Kentucky's military records from the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. His efforts resulted in the Commonwealth's first archival system and the subsequent creation of the Kentucky Library and Archives, the University of Kentucky Special Collections and Archives, the Kentucky Oral History Commission, the Kentucky History Center (recently named for him), and the University Press of Kentucky. Book excerpt: Between the two world wars my father took an interest in poems and rhymes from the Great War and wrote some 30 of them down in a notebook along with other poetry. This book is based on those poems and the Great War. In 1914 Britain was reluctantly drawn into war with Germany in support of France, an inevitability that had been forecast since the signing of the Entente Cordiale. Germany had the biggest army in the world and was the belligerent by declaring war against Russia and through that act, France, then England, by treaty or agreement, was also committed. In 1914 Britain's had a pathetically small army but by 1918 it was equal in size to the armies of Germany and France, and was taking the brunt of the fighting alongside a French army weakened by mutiny and low morale. Throughout the war the BEF fought heroically and courageously, at times forced to retreat, but they were never beaten. The enemy never managed to break through to the important centres or the Channel ports, nor did they ever break the British spirit. Yet the BEF were scorned by the powers that be at home and treated with ignominy, Lloyd George failed disgracefully to stand by the General Staff in France who, without doubt in some instances, made mistakes, they were however guided by their conscience and better judgement in their attempts to bring the war to an early conclusion. I hope that this book goes some way to restoring their credibility and shows the efforts of those who were there in a fairer perspective.
