Book excerpt: A unique illustrated account of the war against the Boers Occasionally, a book can be most readily described as 'delightful' and this book is certainly one of that select category. Jackson was one of those soldiers who viewed life with a good humour and wherever that was possible, that was the way he has written his Boer War experiences. To add to the charm of his book he has peppered the text with his own humorous drawings which naturally ooze authenticity and add greatly to the reader's enjoyment of his narrative. Of course, it is impossible to write a book of war without the unpleasant business of battles and skirmishes making their presence felt and Jackson takes us through campaign, march, camp, skirmish and battle in absorbing detail. This is a book few students of the Boer War will want to be absent from their collections. Recommended. Available in hardback with dustwrapper and softback.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The Victorian soldier in Africa re-examines the campaign experience of British soldiers in Africa during the period, 1874–1902 – the zenith of the Victorian imperial expansion – and does so from the perspective of the regimental soldier. The book utilises an unprecedented number of letters and diaries, written by regimental officers and other ranks, to allow soldiers to speak for themselves about their experience of colonial warfare. The sources demonstrate the adaptability of the British army in fighting in different climates, over demanding terrain and against a diverse array of enemies. They also uncover soldiers’ responses to army reforms of the era as well as the response to the introduction of new technologies of war. Moreover, the book provides commentary on soldiers’ views of commanding officers and politicians alongside assessment of war correspondents, colonial auxiliaries and African natives in their roles as bearers, allies and enemies. This book reveals new insights on imperial and racial attitudes within the army, on relations between soldiers and the media and the production of information and knowledge from frontline to homefront. It will make fascinating reading for students, academics and enthusiasts in imperial history, Victorian studies, military history and colonial warfare.

He fought at the Battles of Belmont, Graspan, Twee- Reviere (Modder River), Magersfontein and several other skirmishes. After Bloemfontein was occupied, he teamed up with Braam Preller, his father-in-law, and adopted 'fight and flight' tactics. His home was burnt down and wife interned in the Kroonstad Concentration Camp, where his new-born daughter died. He was captured in April 1902 and banished as a prisoner of war to Umballa, India, where his experiences till Thursday 20th November 1902 were documented. He shared a tent with his father-in-law and later met up with his father and brother who were POW's at Bhimtal. His diaries are lodged with the Anglo-Boer War museum in Bloemfontein. The author's grandmother, Lizzie Preller, having published her "Oorlogsherinneringe" (memoirs), provided the inspiration to add this addition to African history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Henry Tweddell (1869-1921) was one of several thousand Canadian soldiers who fought with British forces in the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). A methodical diarist, Tweddell recounts his year of service from the time he left Quebec City until his return. Tweddell's diary captures the sounds, sights, and stench of war, its friendships and rivalries, its routine and boredom, its death, disease, and injury. Readers are taken into the battlefield and the British military’s disastrous medical services and facilities, and his month-long sight-seeing sick leave in London. Tweddell's diary suggests the allure of late nineteenth-century warfare, an appeal that drew many Boer War veterans, Tweddell included, to volunteer for service in the Great War that followed. Carman Miller's introduction presents a concise analysis of the Boer War's origins and its appeal to Canadian volunteers, and places the diarist within Quebec City's distinct society of overlapping religious, ethnic, and linguistic identities. Tweddell's diary, presented here in full for the first time, offers a rare and fascinating first-person account of Charlie's first war. It is a privileged insight into the fabric of late nineteenth-century military life, its opportunities, and personal costs, seen through the eyes of a perceptive observer and sympathetic raconteur.

This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South African and Vietnam Wars provoked dramatically different reactions in Australians, from pro-British jingoism on the eve of Federation, to the anti-war protest movements of the 1960s. In contrast, the letters and diaries of Australian soldiers written while on the South African and Vietnam battlefields reveal that their reactions to the war they were fighting were surprisingly unlike those on the home fronts from which they came. Australian Soldiers in South Africa and Vietnam follows these combat men from enlistment to the war front and analyses their words alongside theories of soldiering to demonstrate the transformation of soldiers as a response to developments in military procedure, as well as changing civilian opinion. In this way, the book illustrates the strength of a soldier's link to their home front lives.
