Book Synopsis Metallurgy of Welding by : J. F. Lancaster
Download or read book Metallurgy of Welding written by J. F. Lancaster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended, like its predecessor (The metallurgy of welding, brazing and soldering), to provide a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students concerned with welding, and for candidates taking the Welding Institute examinations. At the same time, it may prove useful to practising engineers, metallurgists and welding engineers in that it offers a resume of information on welding metallurgy together with some material on the engineering problems associated with welding such as reliability and risk analysis. In certain areas there have been developments that necessitated complete re-writing of the previous text. Thanks to the author's colleagues in Study Group 212 of the International Institute of Welding, understanding of mass flow in fusion welding has been radically transformed. Knowledge of the metallurgy of carbon and ferritic alloy steel, as applied to welding, has continued to advance at a rapid pace, while the literature on fracture mechanics accumulates at an even greater rate. In other areas, the welding of non-ferrous metals for example, there is little change to report over the last decade, and the original text of the book is only slightly modified. In those fields where there has been significant advance, the subject has become more quantitative and the standard of math ematics required for a proper understanding has been raised.

Book excerpt: Many important advances in technology have been associated with nanotechnology and the miniaturization of components, devices and systems. Microjoining has been closely associated with the evolution of microelectronic packaging, but actually covers a much broader area, and is essential for manufacturing many electronic, precision and medical products.Part one reviews the basics of microjoining, including solid-state bonding and fusion microwelding. Part two covers microjoining and nanojoining processes, such as bonding mechanisms and metallurgy, process development and optimization, thermal stresses and distortion, positioning and fixturing, sensing, and numerical modelling. Part three discusses microjoining of materials such as plastics, ceramics, metals and advanced materials such as shape memory alloys and nanomaterials. The book also discusses applications of microjoining such as joining superconductors, the manufacture of medical devices and the sealing of solid oxide fuel cells. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental aspects of microjoining processes and techniques. It is a valuable reference for production engineers, designers and researchers using or studying microjoining technologies in such industries as microelectronics and biomedical engineering. - Reviews the basics of nanojoining including solid-state bonding and fusion microwelding - Covers microjoining and nanojoining processes such as bonding mechanisms and metallurgy, sensing and numerical modelling - Examines applications of microjoining such as the manufacturing of medical devices, and the sealing of solid oxide fuel cells
Book Synopsis Solder Joint Reliability by : John H. Lau
Download or read book Solder Joint Reliability written by John H. Lau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solders have given the designer of modern consumer, commercial, and military electronic systems a remarkable flexibility to interconnect electronic components. The properties of solder have facilitated broad assembly choices that have fueled creative applications to advance technology. Solder is the electrical and me chanical "glue" of electronic assemblies. This pervasive dependency on solder has stimulated new interest in applica tions as well as a more concerted effort to better understand materials properties. We need not look far to see solder being used to interconnect ever finer geo metries. Assembly of micropassive discrete devices that are hardly visible to the unaided eye, of silicon chips directly to ceramic and plastic substrates, and of very fine peripheral leaded packages constitute a few of solder's uses. There has been a marked increase in university research related to solder. New electronic packaging centers stimulate applications, and materials engineering and science departments have demonstrated a new vigor to improve both the materials and our understanding of them. Industrial research and development continues to stimulate new application, and refreshing new packaging ideas are emerging. New handbooks have been published to help both the neophyte and seasoned packaging engineer.

Book Synopsis Joining of Titanium by : Robert Edward Monroe
Download or read book Joining of Titanium written by Robert Edward Monroe and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report supplies information on joining processes applicable to titanium and its alloys in sheet metal applications, primarily related directly to airframe construction. Although the material presented here does not cover all titanium joining processes, and omits such processes as plasma-arc, submerged-arc, electroslag, flash, and high-frequency resistance welding, the data presented cover materials up to 2-inches thick in some cases and the report should be useful to anyone seeking titanium joining information. The joining processes covered fall into five categories: welding, brazing, metallurgical bonding (diffusion and deformation bonding), adhesive bonding, and mechanical fastening. The fusion welding processes that are discussed in detail include gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, arc spot, and electron beam. The resistance processes give extended coverage are spot, roll spot, and seam welding. (Author).

Book Synopsis Corrosion of Weldments by : Joseph R. Davis
Download or read book Corrosion of Weldments written by Joseph R. Davis and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion failures of industrial components are commonly associated with welding. The reasons are many and varied. For example, welding may reduce the resistance to corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking by altering composition and microstructure, modifying mechanical properties, introducing residual stress, and creating physical defects. This book details the many forms of weld corrosion and the methods used to minimize weld corrosion. Chapters on specific alloys groups--carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, high-nickel alloys, and nonferrous alloys--describe both general welding characteristics and the metallurgical factors that influence corrosion behavior. Corrosion problems associated with dissimilar metal weldments are also examined. Case histories document corrosion problems unique to specific industries including oil and gas, chemical processing, pulp and paper, and electric power. Special challenges caused by high-temperature environments are discussed. Commonly used methods to monitor weld corrosion and test methods for evaluation of intergranular, pitting, crevice, stress-corrosion cracking, and other forms of corrosion are also reviewed.
