While Spain's Rafael Moneo has recently completed a cathedral in Los Angeles, Britain's Thomas Heatherwick is designing a Buddhist temple in Japan, John Pawson is working on a Cistercian monastery in the Czech Republic and Richard Meier has completed his Jubilee Church in Rome. It seems, as one Wallpaper registered] pundit commented, 'religion is getting a redesign' and the architect's faith is as unimportant as his or her nationality. I Looking at ways in which contemporary architects are approaching religious or meditative space, this book focuses on churches, chapels, temples, synagogues and mosques that have been built in the last few years and that represent a late-twentieth/ early-twenty-first century aesthetic.

Book excerpt: * The monograph features an ensemble of 20 projects by Sancho-Madridejos Architecture Office (S-MAO) with axonometric diagrams and concept models* Along with S-MAO's projects, this issue features two essays by Juan Carlos Sancho and an essay by Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa, principal architects of Ensamble Studio, describing S-MAO's worksa+u's May issue features the work of Sancho-Madridejos Architecture Office (S-MAO). Based in Madrid, Spain and established in 1982 by Juan Carlos Sancho and Sol Madridejos, the office has developed a nuanced and committed practice rooted in investigations in plastic arts and aesthetic theory. An essay by their close friends, Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa, reveals the deeper origins to S-MAO's approach and describes how their trials and investigations have yielded "new processes in engineering, new construction systems, and a new language." An ensemble of 20 projects, framed according to two investigative themes, are featured in this monograph, supported by axonometric diagrams and concept models. The multiple views of early study models convey the obsessive search for an "original space," as described by García-Abril and Mesa, where structure, envelope, and shape come together. Text in English and Japanese.

Book excerpt: Image, Text, Architecture brings a radical and detailed analysis of the modern and contemporary architectural media, addressing issues of architectural criticism, architectural photography and the role of journal editors. It covers examples as diverse as an article by British artist Paul Nash in The Architectural Review, 1940, an early project by French architects Lacaton & Vassal published in the journal 2G, 2001, and recent photography by Hisao Suzuki for the Spanish journal El Croquis. At the intersection of image and text the book also reveals the role of the utopian impulse within the architectural media, drawing on theories of utopian discourse from the work of the French semiotician and art theorist Louis Marin, and the American Marxist critic Fredric Jameson. Through this it builds a fresh theoretical approach to journal studies, revealing a hitherto unexplored dimension of "latent" or "unconscious" discourse within the media portrait of architecture. The purpose of this enquiry is to highlight moments where a different type of critical voice emerges on the architectural journal page, indicating the possibility of a more progressive engagement with the media as a platform for critical and speculative thinking about architecture, and to rethink the journals’ role within architectural history.

Book excerpt: "New Spiritual Architecture looks at ways in which contemporary architects are approaching religious or meditative space. The book focuses on churches, chapels, temples, synagogues and mosques that have been built in the last few years and that represent a late-twentieth/early-twenty-first century aesthetic. These buildings demonstrate how new ideas and developments in urban, domestic and public architecture are being used to inform design that is intended for inspiration, worship or meditation. The text discusses the ways in which architects manipulate light and space and considers the placement of these buildings in their surroundings. Following a brief introduction, the book explores the following five themes: New Traditions, Interventions, Retreats, Grand Icons, and Modest Magnificence. It includes 200 full-color illustrations and 100 line drawings."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Space, light and material: from the meditative ambiance of a chapel or synagogue to the colourful, organic forms of fashion boutiques, the design of an interior space - composed of lighting, the surfaces, textures and colours of materials, finishing and features - creates atmosphere and lends specific character. The growing willingness on the part of designers in recent years to experiment with colours, materials and spatial concepts is demonstrated in the range and diversity of international examples presented in this, the third volume in the series "In Detail". All plans and drawings of interiors and furnishings have been carefully researched and drawn by the staff of DETAIL. Three introductory essays by expert authors are followed by 28 exemplary case-studies by such names as Alvaro Siza, Future Systems, Dominique Perrault, and Herzog & de Meuron.

Book excerpt: The last decade has seen the emergence of a whole new generation of church designs. Covering buildings across the world, Contemporary Church Architecture aims to appeal not only to architects and clergy involved directly in ecclesiastical architecture but also other practitioners and those with a broader interest in cutting-edge design. This book covers the development of contemporary church design by looking at how the rational and the sacred can be reconciled and can inform one another. It also outlines the main trends and approaches: the conflict between self-expression and expression of the sacred, between sculptural signification and functionalism. Beautifully illustrated with around 350 photographs.
