Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reclamation of Alkali Land in Salt Lake Valley, Utah In 1899 the Bureau (then Division) of Soils, in cooperation with the Utah experiment station, made a soil survey of that portion of the valley lying west of Jordan River. This survey comprised an area of over 250 square miles, but did not include the best farming districts of the valley lying east of the Jordan River. This should be remembered in the discussion of the alkali problems, since the lands east of the river are but little affected by alkali. There are some alkali areas south of Salt Lake City, especially in the bottom along the river, but the greater extent of land east of the river has good slope, which implies fair natural drainage with the tendency for the salts originally contained in the soils to be washed t? Lower levels. It is this part of the valley that has had the greatest agricultural development and is at present in a prosperous condition. This soil survey was made by Frank D. Gardner and John Stewart, and the report was published in the Field Operations of the Division of Soils, 1899, and as Bulletin 72 of the Utah experiment station. The soils were found to have been formed by material brought down from the mountains and from sediments of ancient Lake Bonneville, all of which have been materially modified by inflowing streams from the mountains and by the advance and recession of Great Salt Lake. On account of the manner of their formation the soils vary greatly in character. In the lower part of the valley the lacustrine deposits are very deep, no rock or gravel being found at a depth of a hundred or more feet. As we approach the foothills gravel and rock are plentiful and often crop out at the surface, and the depth of lake sediments diminishes and in many places none at all is found. The soils are fertile, but in their natural condition support only a meager vegetation, because they are either too dry or contain too much alkali. On the higher levels, where little salt is present, sage brush forms the chief growth, while in the lower parts of the valley, where there is more moisture and much salt, greasewood, salt grass, and other salt-loving vegetation forms the principal growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Survey of the Cache Valley Area, Utah Cache Valley lies in the northern part of Utah and extends into Idaho. In shape it is an irregular oval, with its long axis north and south. The maximum width, about 195 miles, is attained at the utah-idaho boundary. From this point the valley narrows both north and south. About two-thirds of the valley, a segment 44 miles in length, lies in Utah, and it is this part which is covered by this survey. It contains 450 square miles, or acres. No base map was available for the plotting of the soil and the base map used was made by plane-table traverse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to Salt Lake: Being a Journey Across the Plains, and a Residence in the Mormon Settlements at Utah A narrative merely personal, whatever its excesses or defects, hardly stands in need of a preface. It is enough, therefore, as regards the first part of this volume, to say that in it is attempted a picture of the journey across the Plains westward, as made by the emigrant and the cattle-driver. The second part is of a different character, and, from the nature of its subject, may, perhaps, be read with suspicion, or even charged with untruthfulness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exploration and Survey of the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah: Including a Reconnoissance of a New Route Through the Rocky Mountains Loring, for the purpose; but who, before its completion, was required to rejoin his regiment, for service on the Pacific coast. In the Department of Natural Science, from my very limited time, I was not successful in securing the services of a competent assistant. Yet, although as much has not been accomplished as I had anticipated, it is hoped that some additional light has been thrown upon the Geological formation and Natural History of these almost unknown regions. The papers of Professors Baird, Haldeman, Torrey, and Hall, together with the analyses of Dr. Gale, will not be without interest to the lovers of science. To these gentlemen, and to Messrs. Girard Peale, I am much indebted for the labours which, from a regard to the general interests of science, they have bestowed toward rendering the present report more complete and satis factory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Founding of Utah Seventy-five years ago this spring, 1923, the colonists of Utah were clearing the land in the Salt Lake Valley and planting wheat, rye, corn, potatoes, buckwheat, beans, and squash. They had experienced a hard winter, for food was scarce and their clothing hardly enough to keep them warm. But the springtime brought sunshine, hope, and cheer. Everybody went on to the land and worked. Hundreds of immigrants were expected in the summer and autumn, and they would be in need of food. The work of colonizing the Great Basin by the Mormon pioneers had begun. They be gan the conquest of the soil, and, as they conquered, they loved the land more and more. The following account of the founding of Utah is intended to serve as an introduction to the later history of the State. The book, therefore, deals mainly with origins. It is a series of stories headed as chapters which give the principal eco nomic and social factors of our State's early history. The field of Western history has hardly been touched; and the same may be said of Utah history. Our State has passed through all the stages of economic and social life that are common to American civilization. The story of the develop ment of Utah is a story of the conquest of the soil andthe establishing of the institutions of American civilization in this part of the great West. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Salt Lake: Present and Past In some parts the following pages are reprints of articles that have appeared over the writer's signature in local and scientific periodicals; in other portions they are little more than a compilation of facts already of record. Perhaps sufficient excuse for the present publication may be found in the fact that reliable information regarding the Great Salt Lake is of difficult access to the general reader, inasmuch as it is mostly contained in the valuable though ponderous tomes of the national surveys. The popular writings on the subject, with some exceptions, have been criticized as extravagant and untrustworthy. The truth regarding Utah's Dead Sea is sufficiently impressive without recourse to fabulous embellishment, even if such were in any sense justifiable. The writer has drawn freely on the valuable records of investigators, and acknowledgment of authorities has been made in place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lithosequence of Soils and Associated Vegetation on Subalpine Range of the Wasatch Plateau, Utah This study of soil-vegetal-parent material relations may explain strongly developed soil surface and vegetal patterns observed on a small knoll on this summer range. The hypothesis was that phosphorus (p) and sulfur (8) contents of contrasting parent materials, and their derived soils have been major factors controlling soil and vegetation development on this knoll (walker 1956, Walker and Adams In turn, contrasting soil-plant systems that developed on those parent materials have responded differently to degradation caused by sheep grazing from 1870 until 1905 and the pathways of secondary successional that began thereafter with the regulation of grazing. These relations may have important implications for manag ing the summer range, especially if contrasting systems are distinctly different in site potential.
