Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is a prevalent remediation approach for volatile contaminants in the vadose zone. A diminishing rate of contaminant extraction over time is typically observed due to 1) diminishing contaminant mass, and/or 2) slow rates of removal for contamination in low-permeability zones. After a SVE system begins to show indications of diminishing contaminant removal rate, SVE performance needs to be evaluated to determine whether the system should be optimized, terminated, or transitioned to another technology to replace or augment SVE. This guidance specifically addresses the elements of this type of performance assessment. While not specifically presented, the approach and analyses in this guidance could also be applied at the onset of remediation selection for a site as a way to evaluate current or future impacts to groundwater from vadose zone contamination. The guidance presented here builds from existing guidance for SVE design, operation, optimization, and closure from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment. The purpose of the material herein is to clarify and focus on the specific actions and decisions related to SVE optimization, transition, and/or closure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most widely used techniques for treating soils contaminated with volatile organic compounds, soil vapor extraction (SVE) can also be applied to semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) if the soil is heated, by applying electromagnetic energy in the radio frequency (FR) range, to increase the vapor pressure of the contaminants. Although RF-SVE systems used in previous field demonstrations have had varying degrees of success, questions remain concerning its viability and cost-effectiveness. Soil Vapor Extraction Using Radio Frequency Heating: Resource Manual and Technology Demonstration covers detailed scientific and engineering information that answers these questions. The book includes the necessary databases, equations, and example calculations for RF heating. The theoretical and practical information included will facilitate future testing of RF-SVE treatment of soils. Additionally, the book provides information for a full-scale engineering design of potential RF-SVE applications. The authors use this information to examine predicted performance, magnitude of costs, and modifications to the design that may decrease cost. Soil Vapor Extraction Using Radio Frequency Heating: Resource Manual and Technology Demonstration gives an economic analysis of this innovative technology and considers other possible applications for it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remediation of Legacy Hazardous and Nuclear Industrial Sites provides an overview of the key elements involved in remediating complex waste sites using the Hanford nuclear site as a case study. Hanford is one of the most complex waste sites in the world and has examples of most, if not all, characteristics of the complex waste sites that exist globally. This book is aimed at a non-technical audience and describes the stages of remediation based on general RCRA/CERCLA processes, from establishing a strategy that includes all stakeholders to site assessment, waste treatment and disposal, and long-term monitoring. Features: Informs a non-technical audience of the important elements involved in complex waste site remediation Employs the Hanford Site as a case study throughout to explain real-world applications of remediation steps Connects the “human” element to the technical aspects through interviews with key current and retired individuals at the Hanford Site Includes discussion of stakeholders and the engagement process in remediation Demonstrates how all elements of complex waste site remediation from demolition of buildings to groundwater management are interrelated Focuses on broader technical and sociopolitical challenges for remediation of a contaminated site Aimed at a broad audience, this book offers approachable guidance to technical and non-technical readers through a series of real-world examples that cover each important step in the complex waste cleanup process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since the inception of Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) as a viable contaminated soil restoration strategy, operators of these systems have struggled with determining the best date to terminate operation of their systems. Using principles of soil-gas flow and mass transport through unsaturated soils, stochastic hydrogeology, uncertainty analysis, and a cost/risk decision model, a procedure that can determine the appropriate time to discontinue operation of SVE systems was developed. Modeling of physical characteristics and determination of mass removal of a SVE system was accomplished using statistical realizations of permeability (uncertainty model) and a 2D advective-dispersive finite element vapor transport program (VapourT). The results from subsequent Monte Carlo analysis of the mass removal simulations are then subjected to a cost/risk analysis (decision model) to determine the appropriate termination time for the system based on costs and the probability that the system will fail to reach the regulatory standard. The decision model provides information on the cost benefits associated with either the continued operation of a SVE system, or its replacement with a more economically feasible remediation system. The intention of this research is to validate a framework for the estimation of termination time for the operational phase of a selected soil vapor extraction system"--Leaves iii.

The aim of CleanWAS 2016 is to provide productive opportunities for academics and practitioners from interdisciplinary fields of Environmental Sciences to meet, share and bring expertise and ideas in related disciplines. The CleanWAS conference was first organized in the year 2012. It is an annual event organised by the International Water, Air and Soil Conservation society (INWASCON) and is supported by various Malaysian (UKM, UMS, UIAM) and Chinese universities (CUG, NKU, SYSU).

Book Synopsis A Model for Economically Based Conceptual Design of Soil Vapor Extraction Systems by :
Download or read book A Model for Economically Based Conceptual Design of Soil Vapor Extraction Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil vapor extraction, also known as in situ soil venting, is rapidly becoming a widespread technique for the remediation of sites containing soils contaminated with volatile compounds. In this process, the soil is decontaminated in place by inducing air flow through the contaminated soil zones. Air, removed from the soil through extraction vents using a vacuum blower, may be resupplied by infiltration from the surface or through forced or passive inlet vents. This air flow sweeps out the soil gas, disrupting the equilibrium existing between contaminants which are (1) sorbed onto the soil particles, (2) dissolved in soil pore water, (3) held in a separate contaminant phase, and (4) existing in the vapor phase. This causes vaporization of the contaminants and removal in the extracted gas stream. Emissions control devices are often necessary for treatment of the gas stream prior to discharge. By preventing the hazards caused by subsurface vapor movement and by removing the contaminants before they reach groundwater, soil vapor extraction is extremely useful in decontaminating unsaturated zone soils. The technology may also be used in conjunction with pump-and-treat groundwater remediation techniques for complete cleanup of soil and groundwater in cases where the contaminants have reached the water table. 22 refs., 9 figs.
