Book Synopsis Soil Organic Matter and Biological Activity by : D. Vaughan
Download or read book Soil Organic Matter and Biological Activity written by D. Vaughan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been recognized that soil organic matter is the key to soil fertility. As a nutrient store it gradually provides essential elements which the soil cannot retain for long in inorganic form. It buffers growing plants against sudden changes in their chemical environment and preserves moisture in times of drought. It keeps the soil in a friable, easily penetrated physical condition, well-aerated and free draining, providing young seedlings with an excellent medium for growth. But it has another property, the nature and extent of which have been the subject of argu ment and controversy ever since scientists began to study the soil, and that is its ability to affect growth directly, other than by providing nutrient elements. Any one wishing to learn about these effects has been faced with a daunting mass of literature, some confusing, often contradictory, and spread through a multitude of journals. Individual aspects have been covered from time to time in reviews but there has obviously been a need for a modern authoritative text book dealing with the many facets of this subject, so the publication of this volume is timely. The editors and authors are all specialists in their fields, fully familiar with the com plex nature of soil organic matter and with the particular difficulties arising in any study of its properties. Where controversies exist they have presented all sides of the argument and have highlighted areas where further work is badly needed.
Book Synopsis Methodologies for Soil and Sediment Fractionation Studies by : Philippe Quevauviller
Download or read book Methodologies for Soil and Sediment Fractionation Studies written by Philippe Quevauviller and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of soils and sediments for pollutants is increasingly required in today's industrial world. It is therefore important that extraction procedures used for environmental risk assessment studies, production of certified reference materials and applications of extraction schemes are standardised throughout the scientific community. This book deals specifically with operationally-defined extraction methods for the determination of "fractions" of elements in soil and sediment matrices. Bringing together the work of a number of different international laboratories, the book describes single and sequential extraction procedures. It then goes on to present a summary of the latest research on extraction/leaching tests for the determination of trace organic compounds in wastes, followed by an outline of an international network which aims to standardise extraction and leaching methodologies for their applications to various environmental matrices. Methodologies for Soil and Sediment Fractionation Studies will be welcomed by researchers and analysts in academia, industry and government institutions worldwide.

Book Synopsis Improving Potassium Recommendations for Agricultural Crops by : T. Scott Murrell
Download or read book Improving Potassium Recommendations for Agricultural Crops written by T. Scott Murrell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book highlights concepts discussed at two international conferences that brought together world-renowned scientists to advance the science of potassium (K) recommendations for crops. There was general agreement that the potassium recommendations currently in general use are oversimplified, outdated, and jeopardize soil, plant, and human health. Accordingly, this book puts forward a significantly expanded K cycle that more accurately depicts K inputs, losses and transformations in soils. This new cycle serves as both the conceptual basis for the scientific discussions in this book and a framework upon which to build future improvements. Previously used approaches are critically reviewed and assessed, not only for their relevance to future enhancements, but also for their use as metrics of sustainability. An initial effort is made to link K nutrition in crops and K nutrition in humans. The book offers an invaluable asset for graduate students, educators, industry scientists, data scientists, and advanced agronomists.
