Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide coverage of soils and perennial cropping systems in the tropicsSynthesis of decades of researchChallenges assumptions on the benefits of plantations for soil fertilityIt is generally assumed that soil fertility decline is widespread in the tropics and that this is largely associated with annual cropping and subsistence farming. In contrast, perennial plant cover (as in plantation agriculture) provides better protection for the soil. This book reviews these concepts, focusing on soil chemical changes under different land-use systems in the tropics. These include perennial crops, annual crops and forest plantations. Two case studies, on sisal plantations in Tanzania and sugar cane in Papua New Guinea, are presented for detailed analysis. The author demonstrates that soil fertility decline is also a problem on plantations.

Book excerpt: Phosphorus is an essential plant nutrient, but global population growth has dramatically reduced the availability of phosphorus fertilizer resources. Despite this scarcity, there remain numerous problems associated with the excessive and inappropriate use of phosphorus leading to non-point source pollution and eutrophication of natural waters. Identifying appropriate systems for managing soil phosphorus and reducing the risks of eutrophication are needed to minimize the environmental risks. This book focuses on the availability and recycling of phosphorus; regulatory and policy issues of sustainable phosphorus use; and water quality management in agroecosystems pertaining to phosphorus. Sections are dedicated to global phosphorus reserves; cycling and pathways of phosphorus; phosphorus in agriculture; human dimensions and policy intervention; and research and development priorities. Phosphorus is a finite but crucial resource and is an essential element to all life. Sub-optimal availability and nutrient imbalance in the root zone can adversely impact plant growth, and the quality of food and feed grown on these soils. However, the proven reserves of phosphorus can hardly be adequate for a few centuries only. Yet, its misuse and mismanagement has caused severe problems of eutrophication of water and pollution of the environment. Thus, judicious management of soil phosphorus is essential. This volume is specifically devoted to availability and recycling of phosphorus, regulatory/policy issues of sustainable use of phosphorus, and management in agroecosystems in the context of maximizing the use efficiency and minimizing the environmental risks of water quality.

Book excerpt: Different stakeholders generally have different types of knowledge and understanding; 'common' knowledge for farmers is not necessarily 'common' for scientists or development workers and vice versa. When effective collaboration is essential to improve rural living conditions, including soil fertility, it becomes necessary to build bridges between knowledge domains. Mutual learning, however, takes time and commitment from both farmers and change agents. Managaing soil fertility in the tropics. Building common knowledge: Participatory learning and action research is a tool that can help you to achieve it, constructing bridges for example by using nutrient flow analysis. It begins by demystifying concepts and theories of system diversity, and creating frameworks for the analysis of farming situations. Investigating resource and nutrient flows helps to understand the dynamics of soil fertility and its underlying processes. At the heart of it is a structured process called participatory learning and action research (PLAR). PLAR, facilitated by change agents, takes place within farming communities. Based on an analysis of farmers' current management practices, it continues with step-wise planning, experimentation and evaluation of improvements, and also briefly outlines procedures for storing, transferring and using information gathered during PLAR with farmers.
