Book excerpt: This report records how agricultural land is used and managed in Canada using responses from the 1991 census of agriculture; produces a study to serve as a baseline for all subsequent monitoring of land management practices through the census; and provides information for environmental studies of soil and water. An overview of land management describes applications of nutrients, herbicides, and pesticides and methods used to control soil erosion. Summaries of land practices are given by region (British Columbia, the Prairies, Central Canada, and Atlantic Canada), and cover manure, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, irrigation, erosion control, and tillage methods.

Book excerpt: During the last twenty years, mutations within agricultural systems in France and Europe have brought on a spectacular worsening of soil erosion and degradation. This volume, contributed to by scientists from 25 countries, discusses how this risk can be evaluated, and which solutions should be adopted without radically disturbing the socio-economic orientation of major agricultural regions. It is an excellent starting point for the development of new research themes, and will be of great value to soil and environmental scientists, and to all those involved in land irrigation and drainage.

Book excerpt: Despite almost a century of research and extension efforts, soil erosion by water, wind and tillage continues to be the greatest threat to soil health and soil ecosystem services in many regions of the world. Our understanding of the physical processes of erosion and the controls on those processes has been firmly established. Nevertheless, some elements remain controversial. It is often these controversial questions that hamper efforts to implement sound erosion control measures in many areas of the world. This book, released in the framework of the Global Symposium on Soil Erosion (15-17 May 2019) reviews the state-of-the-art information related to all topics related to soil erosion.

Book Synopsis Agricultural Policies and Soil Degradation in Western Canada by : Aziz Bouzaher
Download or read book Agricultural Policies and Soil Degradation in Western Canada written by Aziz Bouzaher and published by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Policy Branch. This book was released on 1994 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated agro-ecological economic modeling system is being constructed around the Canadian Regional Agriculture Model (CRAM) for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. As an initial application, and to test its performance, the system was used to evaluate the resource neutrality of the Gross Revenue Insurance Program (GRIP) in the Prairie Provinces. The report discusses the interactions between the major system components of agricultural decision (RS-CRAM) and environmental decision; imposes the policy scenario being simulated on RS-CRAM, where management decisions are simulated based on expected producer response to risk and options available in the input substitution component; interfaces management parameters such as tillage level, crop, and crop sequence from RS-CRAM with the environmental metamodels; and then performs an analysis to evaluate the overall economic and environmental impacts of the simulated policy scenario.
