Book excerpt: An Electrolyser is a part of a renewable energy system (RES) and generates hydrogen from water electrolysis that is used in fuel cells. A dc-to-dc converter is required to couple the Electrolyser to the system DC bus. This thesis presents an extensive comparison of three soft-switched high-frequency transformer isolated dc-to-dc converters for this application. It is shown that LCL-type series resonant converter (SRC) with capacitive output filter is suitable for this application. Due to the wide variation in input voltage and load current, no converter can maintain zero-voltage switching (ZVS) for the complete operating range. To overcome this problem, two new converter configurations are proposed. Proposed Configuration 1 is a two-stage boost-LCL SRC with capacitive output filter and Proposed Configuration 2 is a transient-boost dual half-bridge LCL SRC with capacitive output filter. Operating principle, design, simulation and experimental results of the newly proposed converters are also presented.

Book excerpt: Photovoltaic (PV) energy generation is an excellent example of large-scale electric power generation through various parallel arrangements of small voltage-generating solar cells or modules. However, PV generation systems require power electronic converters system to satisfy the need for real-time applications or to balance the demand for power from electric. Therefore, a DC-DC power converter is a vital constituent in the intermediate conversion stage of PV power. This book presents a comprehensive review of various non-isolated DC-DC power converters. Non-isolated DC-DC converters for renewable energy system (RES) application presented in this book 1st edition through a detailed original investigation, obtained numerical/experimental results, and guided the scope to design new families of converters: DC-DC multistage power converter topologies, Multistage "X-Y converter family", Nx IMBC (Nx Interleaved Multilevel Boost Converter), Cockcroft Walton (CW) Voltage Multiplier-Based Multistage/Multilevel Power Converter (CW-VM-MPC) converter topologies, and Z-source and quasi Z-source. Above solutions are discussed to show how they can achieve the maximum voltage conversion gain ratio by adapting the passive/active component within the circuits. For assessment, we have recommended novel power converters through their functionality and designs, tested and verified by numerical software. Further, the hardware prototype implementation is carried out through a flexible digital processor. Both numerical and experimental results always shown as expected close agreement with primary theoretical hypotheses. This book offers guidelines and recommendation for future development with the DC-DC converters for RES applications based on cost-effective, and reliable solutions.

Book excerpt: The accelerating pace of electrification via renewable energy sources is shifting focus towards de-carbonization and distributed generation with the potential to combat increasing environmental crisis and to promote sustainable development. Renewable technologies have the potential to fulfil the electricity demand locally which eliminates the unwanted conversion stages, promoting DC microgrid concept, ultimately lowering the energy costs and easy energy access. Alternative energy sources such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and fuel cell along with energy storage systems are promising for DC microgrid applications. However, the effective integration of these alternative energy sources still remains a challenge due to their low voltage output, unregulated and intermittent characteristics issuing a requirement of a dedicated power conditioning unit. To revolutionize the way these alternative sources are interfaced with a high voltage DC microgrid or to the conventional ac grid, dc/dc converters are expected to be power-dense, compact and extremely efficient. Current-fed dc/dc converters have strong application potential owing to their inherent merits. Accomplishing the abovementioned objectives together with distinct merits offered by current-fed circuits, this thesis aims to exploit the quasi-resonance concept for achieving soft-switching and smooth commutation of the semiconductor switching devices. The proposed quasi resonant approach that utilizes the leakage inductance of transformer and a high frequency series resonant capacitor for a short period also termed as 'resonant-pulse', has been investigated in various current-fed converter topologies. Proposed converter class emphasize on simple and efficient design, without the use of additional snubber circuits and eliminates device turn-off voltage spike, which is a historical problem with traditional current-fed converters. In this thesis, at first the proposed series resonant-pulse concept is implemented in single-phase current-fed push-pull and half-bridge configuration. The converter operation, control and performance are investigated for low voltage high current specifications. These converter configurations demonstrate good efficiency and compact structure with only two switching devices and simpler gate control requirement because devices having common ground with power supply. The idea has then been extended to modular current-fed full-bridge topology. The proposed series resonant-pulse assisted converter enables wide range ZCS and turn-off spike elimination across the semiconductor switches. Modularity of this converter allows easy scalability for high power and voltage levels with significantly lower current and voltage stress, making it suitable for relatively higher power industrial applications. Lastly, to achieve high power capability with high density, three-phase current sharing current-fed topology utilizing series resonant-pulse feature has been studied and investigated in detail. The proposed three-phase topology combines the benefits of current-sharing primary and load adaptive series resonant-pulse. As a result, these converters demonstrate promising attributes such as wide ZCS operation, reduced filtering requirement, lower component count, lower conduction losses etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a renewable energy system, multiple energy sources (such as combining renewable energy and energy storage) are utilized together to enhance the overall energy conversion reliability since renewable energy, such as wind and solar, are intermittent in nature. In conventional power architecture, each energy source requires a dedicated individual power converter to perform specific control or power management function. To reduce the overall number of circuit components, multi-input converter (MIC) configuration provides a cost effective power architecture when multiple energy sources are utilized, as they can use fewer filter circuit components and utilize smaller system space. To maximize the features offered by MICs, a truly power efficient and compact MIC should utilize minimal number of active switching components with soft-switching features, while at the same time, assist each energy power interface to achieve all the required control functions. In the first part of this thesis, a class of several soft-switched DC-DC MICs is proposed, where each input module of the devised MICs utilizes only a single switch. Each of the presented MIC circuits can also be integrated with a front-end (either single phase or three phase) AC-DC stage without adding additional switches to interface with renewable energy generation unit that outputs an AC voltage. In addition, input power factor correction is also provided. The second part of this thesis investigates the use of the devised DC-DC MIC circuit to improve the double power conversion steps typically seen in a solar-battery energy conversion system with a common DC grid that utilizes a bi-directional energy storage power converter. This chapter focuses on the development of a soft-switched MIC circuit that consists of integrated unidirectional energy storage (i.e. battery) power interface, for use in module-connected solar energy power optimizer system with distributed energy storage. In the proposed circuit, the storage charging (storage absorbs power) circuit is integrated with the input stage of the main converter via high frequency AC link, whereas the storage discharging (storage delivers power) circuit is connected to the output stage of MIC. As a result, energy is directed from the input to the battery and from the battery to the load through a single power conversion step. The third part of this thesis utilizes the circuit concepts devised previously to develop a new soft-switched MIC configuration that consists of an integrated unidirectional energy storage power interface, as well as to provide output voltage regulation. Hence, the proposed MIC is applicable for both regulated and unregulated grids. The control mechanism of the proposed system is presented. The operating principles and characteristics of each proposed converter topology are provided in detail. Simulation and experimental results on proof-of-concept prototypes are provided to demonstrate the functionalities of each devised MIC topology.
