Book excerpt: Known as one of the world's major industrial chemicals natural soda ash plays a critical role in glass and ceramics industries, production of chemicals, cleansing and bleaching, and metallurgy. Natural soda ash is also preferable to synthetic types because its production is purer and requires less energy with virtually no harmful environmental effects. Essential data on the properties, sources, processing requirements, and applications of natural soda ash fill this guide, making it valuable to both manufacturers and users. The formation, occurrence and history of natural soda ash deposits are covered along with specific chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics. Explanations of processing techniques demonstrate how to convert soda ash into commercial products. Included are new methods and technologies for large-scale soda ash production, safe handling procedures and marketing strategies.

This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, , course: Chemical Engineering, language: English, abstract: There is a lot of wastage of calcium chloride going on daily and lot of valuable resources are being wasted. If this continues and any solution is not provided then this problem can prove to be very vital for the industry. Based on this study we look forward to design a major project based on recovery of calcium chloride, which will be fruitful to the industry to solve this setback and hence will be profit making concept. The focus on recovery of calcium chloride and minimizing the problem can lead to significant cost savings and industrial growth. Our solution provides the methods for recovery of calcium chloride from which evaporative crystallization process is very economical and efficient process. The final product will be in flake form (calcium chloride dehydrate) having 78 - 80% purity. It can be further dried to get calcium chloride anhydrous having purity level of 94%.The main advantage of this system is physical form of product (non dusty) and the cost of operation is far less as compared to conventional drying systems. The present demand for the calcium chloride is estimated at 53 tons per annum. The demand is expected to reach at 137.5 tones by the year 2018. The calcium chloride recovery from Solvay’s process solution succeeds in addressing all of these requirements where previous efforts have failed.

Download or read book Solvay written by Kenneth Bertrams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Solvay, philanthropist and organizer of the world-famous Solvay conferences on physics, discovered a profitable way of making soda ash in 1861. Together with a handful of associates, he laid the foundations of the Solvay company, which successfully branched out into other chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Since its emergence in 1863, Solvay has maintained world leadership in the production of soda ash. This is the first scholarly book on the history of the Solvay company, which was one of the earliest chemical multinationals and today is among the world's twenty largest chemical companies. It is also one of the largest companies in the field to preserve its family character. The authors analyze the company's 150-year history (1863–2013) from economic, political and social perspectives, showing the enormous impact geopolitical events had on the company and the recent consequences of global competition.
