Book excerpt: This book gathered contributions by the editor, Peter Herrmann, and Wendy Earles and Brigitte Kratzwald. Rather than looking in a specialist perspective at different aspects of current social analysis, it aims to provide a transverse insight into issues of a new world order. Economic and political changes are seen as interwoven in such a way that they mark a system shift. Although catchy terms as re-feudalisation are tempting, they need to be developed in a historical analysis that brings economic and political shifts comprehensively together. The present book, one of three volumes 'Writings on Philosophy and Economy of Power', does not claim to be conclusive. However it presents the view on some core issues. The fundamental view is that we find a shift in the understanding of political regulation that is grounded in a change of the economic formation. However, rather than focusing on the thesis of a simple 'take over' by capitalism or neo-liberalism it is suggested that such development actually means that development is to a large extent actually shifting away from capitalism. Its basic structures, determined by economic laws, are replaced by politically dominated mechanisms of control and steering. As much as feudal structures had been pre-capitalist in their character, we are now facing a post-capitalist feudalism.

Download or read book Mainstreaming Ageing written by Asghar Zaidi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), adopted at the Second World Assembly on Ageing, is the first international agreement that specifically recognises the potential of older people to contribute to the development of their societies. In monitoring its implementation two key approaches are evident: a qualitative bottom-up participatory approach and an approach that uses quantitative indicators to monitor sustainable progress and policies. With the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research, playing a pivotal role in the monitoring of the implementation process, one of its key tasks has been to develop a list of 'indicators of achievement'. This book contains extended and revised versions of policy briefs and background papers that support the implementation monitoring process. The analyses included in these chapters make concrete suggestions towards quantitative indicators, with the aim of assisting national governments in mainstreaming ageing in their policies. The contributors provide an overview of the current situation with respect to population ageing and its consequences and also provide projections for the future. The book also includes the final list of quantitative indicators that arose out of consultations with international experts, related to the four main topics addressed: demography, income and wealth, labour market participation, and social protection and financial sustainability.

Download or read book Dynamic Finland written by Pertti Pesonen and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2002-11-12 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finland celebrated its 85th year of independence in 2002. It is one of the thirteen countries of the world that have preserved their democracy uninterrupted since the First World War. Despite its modest origins and difficult wartime experiences, this dynamic country is now a world leader in many spheres. In 2001 it was named the world's most technologically advanced and also the least corrupt country. Other studies have shown it to have one of the three most competitive economies, the best environmental sustainability, and the second most equal society. Such rapid development has increased the need for information about Finland and what can be learned from its unique experience. This book offers an introduction to the country today, focusing on the most recent research into its politics, policies, and society, viewed in a comparative context. Dynamic Finland has been written for a general audience by two eminent scholars. Pertti Pesonen has been professor of political science in Tampere and Helsinki and at several American universities, and is also the former editor-in-chief of the Aamulehti daily and past chairman of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. Olavi Riihinen served for 24 years as professor of social policy and Chairman of the Department of Social Policy at the University of Helsinki.

Book Synopsis Networks, Trust and Social Capital by : Sokratis M. Koniordos
Download or read book Networks, Trust and Social Capital written by Sokratis M. Koniordos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concepts of social networks, social capital and trust play an increasingly central role in the social sciences. They have become indispensable conceptual tools for the analysis of post-industrial/late-modern societies, which are characterized by such features as the relative decline of formal hierarchies, the development of flexible social arrangements in the sphere of production and the extreme mobility of capital. This is the first book to study the interrelationships between these important concepts both theoretically and empirically. Drawing on empirical investigations from a range of diverse European social contexts, the contributors develop an economic sociology that builds on and extends established theoretical perspectives. The book opens with an introduction to the theoretical ideas: relating social capital to reciprocity, trust and social networks in line with current debates. The authors go on to discuss the concept of social embededdness, addressing the economic effects of social capital by examining the network and trust foundations of labour markets and investigating the structural limits of trusting networks. They conclude with an exploration of the impact of networking and the functioning of trust and social capital on the economic arrangements and performance of nascent capitalist economies in post-Communist Europe. This thematically unified collection by a team of distinguished contributors from across Europe provides an innovative and distinctive contribution to an expanding area of research.
