Sullo sfondo, l’urgenza della sprovincializzazione e scientificizzazione della cultura italiana e marxista in un contesto caratterizzato da un processo di profonde trasformazioni (non ultimo il fenomeno della diffusione delle Human Relations). Un dibattito in buona parte sollecitato anche dalla sfida che la rinascita della Sociologia in Italia rappresentava per la cultura marxista, e che avrebbe avuto conseguenze profonde, seppure indirette, sull’evoluzione della cultura di sinistra. Attraverso il ricorso ad un approccio metodologico interdisciplinare (storico, sociologico, politico) il libro prende in esame alcuni nodi fondamentali di tale dibattito, con particolare riferimento al rapporto tra Sociologia e marxismo, in stretta connessione con l’organizzazione del lavoro intellettuale. Viene ricostruita in particolare la posizione del gruppo dei «marxisti critici», redattori delle riviste «Ragionamenti» e «Opinione», ponendo in luce aspetti rilevanti del loro innovativo contributo non sufficientemente trattati dalla letteratura in materia. While what is called "Marxism" was supposedly hegemonic over Italian culture, and especially history writing, for decades in the postwar period, it then seems to have suddenly disappeared. This study questions such a vision of a monolithic and hegemonic Marxism. It starts from the most effective anecdote to all ideologising narratives—that is, research into the texts themselves. It sees the Marxist historiography of the post-1945 period as a "history in the making," in which references to Marxian theory were a fundamental factor driving historiographical innovation. This allows the book to bring to light a highly original experience in the development of historiography, based on the long Italian tradition of reflection on historical knowledge.
