Book excerpt: Every circumstance which has weakened the socio-economic position of the small holder has increased the supply of agricultural labourers-loss of common rights in the rural economy, the submission of holdings, the disuse of collective enterprise, the multiplication of rent-receivers, free mortgaging and transfer of land and the decline of cottage industries. Agriculture cannot be carried on without the help of hired labour as certain operations, such as, hoeing and harvesting are highly labour-intensive and they need to be completed within a short span of time. Any delay particularly in harvesting can cause a great deal of damage. The demand for labour remained virtually unchanged. Many large farmers, particularly those with small families depend on hired labour to carry on agricultural operations. But the nature of demand, its volume, modes and rates of compensation as well as the relationships between the employers and the employees are rapidly changing. Further, the introduction of new technology in agriculture has resulted in an increased demand for labour as it facilitates multiple cropping although it is found to be highly capital intensive.

Book excerpt: One of the most basic problems of the present century in the Third World Countries is rural poverty. The rural labour households form the hard core of rural poor and the most of the socially backward classes, such as, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes fall in this category. Most of the population is depending upon agriculture that is contributing about one-fourth of the National Income in the country. The most important feature of them are that they have very little or low productive assets and the major part of their income is derived from casual or irregular employment available in villages in Andhra pradesh. The dimensions of poverty among the rural labour households are reflected by the extent of indebtedness among the households and low consumption levels. The basis of findings of the study, it would be useful to make some suggestions that would help to improve the socio-economic conditions of agricultural labourers. The improvement in the socio-economic conditions of the agricultural labour, the large segment of work force would promote economic welfare in general and ultimate lead the Indian economy on the path of growth with stability.

Book excerpt: In Andhra Pradesh as on 1999-2000 rural households account for 12,719 thousand of which 49 per cent are rural labour households and 42.5 per cent are agricultural labour households. The agricultural labour accounts for 86.7 per cent of rural labour households in Andhra Pradesh. Among rural households in Andhra Pradesh, the social compositions of rural labour households are: BCs 43 per cent, SCs 35 per cent and STs 7.3 per cent. The reaming 13.9 per cent of rural labour households belongs to other forward communities i.e. OCs. According to this study, poverty in India is rural in nature since rural poverty accounted for 80 per cent of total poverty and the urban poverty is nothing but over flow of rural poverty. It means migration of rural poor to urban areas is the main cause for urban poverty. Similarly this study explained the fact that incidence of poverty among agricultural labour is highest at 57 per cent who accounts to 80 per cent of rural labour force. Further, the study brought fourth the fact that the number of poor in India has increased from 177 million in 1960-61 to 216 million in 1967-68 inspite of India's planned efforts to promote living conditions of our population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, on interlocking dimensions of poverty based on an intensive study of a developed region in Andhra Pradesh, is an attempt to study the genesis, development, and manifestations of poverty of agricultural labour households. Its uniqueness lies in its coverage of temporal, generational, and asset dimensions of poverty of the sample households. While observing improvements like lower incidence of income poverty, higher literacy among younger age-groups, a favourable attitude to family planning, a decline in infant mortality when studied by the age-group of mothers, and less vulnerability to pressures, the study well records widespread prevalence of asset poverty (both physical and human) and continuing in-mobility into agricultural labour class. The author makes a strong plea for stopping in-mobility into agricultural labour class, while encouraging out-mobility from it with the help of large scale public intervention to ward-off the threat of potential poverty faced by households both living below and above the poverty line. The book will be interest to all those concerned with or interested in the socio-economic well-being of the poorest of the poor in the rural areas. Contents Chapter 1: Poverty: Concepts, Causes and Inter-Relationships; Chapter 2: Poverty of Agricultural Labouring Class In India; Chapter 3: Purpose, Scope and Methodology of the Study; Chapter 4: Socio-Economic Characteristics of the Selected Households; Chapter 5: Temporal and Generational Dimensions of Poverty; Chapter 6: Assets and Indebtedness of Selected Households; Chapter 7: Correlation and Regression Analysis: Selected Variables; Chapter 8: Conclusions and Policy Implications.

Book excerpt: Agriculture is increasingly becoming the preserve of women has important implications for policy. Agriculture policy has been largely blind. In order to formulate policy that is sensitive to women's roles and needs in agriculture, it is first of all necessary to improve the measurement of their participation and to recognize their contribution. Women empowerment should imply a process whereby women become able to organize themselves to increase their own self reliance, to assert their independent right to control resources which will assist in challenging and eliminating their own subordination.

Women take up different works to eke out their livelihood and the majority of the rural women depend on agriculture, which is the major unorganized sector in India. Many of these labour are landless belongs to lower social and economic status. The role and status of women are altered in the process of agrarian social transformation due to the technology of cultivation. The disaggregated pattern of development has varied impact on women members of every region, group, class and caste. In this backdrop, it is pertinent to examine the status of women across the levels of rural transformation consequent upon the technological and agricultural growth. Except a few studies conducted here and there, no serious study is done to explain this social phenomenon. An attempt is made in this book to study the women labour especially in agricultural field of Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examined occupational diversification among rural households in Andhra Pradesh. The specific objectives of the study are: (i) To examine the occupational structure of households in different regions of rural Andhra Pradesh (ii) To assess the level of unemployment, underemployment and poverty in different categories of households (iii) To find out various socio-economic factors affecting employment pattern in different regions and among households, and (iv) To suggest policy measures to reduce unemployment and underemployment. The study is based on National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) unit household data from its 50th and 55th rounds on employment and unemployment surveys for the periods 1993-94 and 1999-2000 respectively. Descriptive statistics, multinomial logit model and simple linear regression analyses were used to achieve above objectives. Among males 43 percent of total workforce engaged in self-employment in agriculture followed by casual labourer in agriculture (27%) and self-employment in industry (11%) in Andhra Pradesh. Among females 40 percent belongs to self-employed in agriculture and another 40 to percent to casual labourer in agriculture. About 9 percent were self-employed in industry. Casual labourer were mostly illiterate, belongs to schedule castes and living below poverty level. While most of the regular employed were rich and higher educated. Even though unemployment was high among higher educated, higher education helps in occupational diversification towards high remunerative non-agricultural sector in both sexes. Non-agricultural workers were having high wage earnings compared to agricultural worker. With the increase of educational level there was a corresponding increase in wage earnings for regular employed in non-agricultural workers, while for casual labourer in agriculture workers there was no corresponding increase in wage income to higher education. About 10% of children are workers. About 50% of females are engaged in other household activities (non-market). Imparting education to people should get priority with special focus on entrepreneurship development. Effective implementation of Minimum Wages Act is required. Women and other weaker sections encouraged in participation of non-agricultural activities.
