Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, this book explores the vital global issue of high and low fertility in poorer countries through a series of case studies by contemporary experts in the fields of development and demography. These studies examine such issues as: the relations between fertility rates and income distributions in poor societies; the question of whether or not neo-classical macro-economics are sufficient to understand and to try to engineer relations between economies and populations; and the specifics of the relations between fertility and a variety of socio-economic factors in both South Asia and West Africa. The point of the collection is to explain how very far general models can be taken, and to suggest that they cannot be taken as far as those who have tended to ignore the structural complexities of, and differences between, various societies have implied.

Unlike the occidental experience, the Sri Lankan one was not preceded by economic growth resulting from industrialization and urbanization. Chapter I focuses on the ecological, and cultural conditions and on the history of Sri Lanka. Chapter II provides a review of the demographic conditions existing prior to the transition period, and chapters III through to V examine the fertility transition in the context of Sri Lanka's economy and development.

Book excerpt: This timely study examines fertility rates and their trends and determinants in less-developed countries by testing an empirical, interdisciplinary model of the fertility transition. In light of the current official position of the United States on population and development, the policy implications of the study are timely. According to some experts, interrupting the spiral of rapid growth and attendant economic and ecological deterioration now rivals nuclear disarmament in importance on the international agenda. Among the questions investigated include: Are there identifiable traits for developing nations that have reduced fertility? Has development become the best contraceptive? Have some development strategies been more conducive to lowering fertility? Do family planning programs have significant impacts on fertility?

Book excerpt: This book examines potential economic opportunities that countries can experience when fertility rates fall and the average life expectancy of the working age population increases. It presents detailed demographic and economic analysis of middle-income countries throughout the world in order to show how these countries can take advantage of this demographic bonus. The book first traces the common link between policies that contribute to fertility transition as well as create the right kind of environment for reaping the benefit of demographic dividend. Next, it explores different countries and regions who are at different levels of development. It assesses the long term impact of gender equality on economic growth and development in Latin America; describes the life-cycle saving patterns of Mexican households; and examines demographic determinants of economic growth in BRICS. The book also offers demographic and economic analysis of the Mediterranean area, Sub-Saharan Africa, and New Zealand. The comparison between the different territorial contexts allow for the identification of three typologies of demographic dividend: the first dividend, when the working population grows faster than total population, the second dividend, as active generations get older and invest their savings in the production system of their country, and the third dividend, based on the coexistence of two populations age structure strongly contrasting. Overall, this book argues for the need to capitalize on the opportunities that come from the demographic dividend by investing heavily in education programs, training programs for the population working age, health programs, the creation of health insurance systems as well as programs to reduce or increase fertility levels.
