Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism Its Nature, Its Dangers, and Its Remedies Considered The primary object in the publication of this volume was the desire of making English and American readers acquainted with the author of the work of which this is only, so to speak, a popularized epitome with additions and alterations to adapt it for English readers. The calm, candid and comprehensive manner in which Dr. Schaffle deals with the great social questions of the day deserves the most attentive consideration of political economists and social reformers. But the present volume is intended for others also who have an interest in the social movement of these days. On the one hand it is addressed to the great middle class, the capitalists, against whom the international and kindred affiliations are directing their open attacks and dreaded secret combinations. On the other hand, it is addressed to those "enlightened" leaders of the labouring classes who can see no other means of salvation for the working man except the destruction of the capital and influence of the hated moneyed middle and upper classes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialist State: Its Nature, Aims, and Conditions; Being an Introduction to the Study of Socialism The aim of this little book is chiefly expository. It is an attempt to indicate, with due regard to relative proportion, the various matters involved in the discussion of Socialism, as to which some opinion must be formed. In some cases the materials for an equitable decision lie ready to hand, recorded in the facts of past experience or in the arguments which have been set forth by the advocates or opponents of the movement, but in other cases we remain dependent on the conscious and unconscious experiments which are being wrought, or are to be wrought, in the sure laboratory of Time. Of one thing we may be certain; the problem of Social Action and Socialism cannot be ignored. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Socialism Made Plain: And Objections, Methods, and Quack Remedies, for Poverty Considered It seems to me that the constitutional or parlia mentary method which he advocates would involve loss of energy, disappointment, and discouragement; that it would bear with it the almost inevitable danger of the people's eyes being directed to the immediate struggle, losing sight of the ultimate aim; of their being befooled by those very concessions which the author speaks of as likely to be offered so eagerly by the present political parties; and, judging by the signs of the times, I cannot help thinking that the necessities of the miserable, ever increasing as the old system gets closer to its inevitable ruin, will outrun the slow process of converting parliament from a mere committee of the landlords and capitalists into a popular body representing the best aspirations of the workers. Moreover socialists, unless they abandon their principles, cannot help showing their hand from the first, and consequently even moderate measures will always be looked on with suspicion coming from them, and concessions which would have been granted without much resistance to the Radicals twenty or even ten years ago, if they had been demanded, will be sternly refused to the Socialist demand. In the days in which I am now writing, there are not lacking signs that the reactionists, driven by the fear of the advancing wave of revolution, are making up their minds to make a stand on the ground of mere brute force, which at present they are able to com mand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism or Empire: A Danger There is an undercurrent of political thought today in the United States, which drifts toward socialism, and this unconscious drift, leads up to a grant of power to our Executive Department quite necessary under a socialistic government, but which creates a danger to our institutions. Successive grants of power to an executive, have always ended in Empire with Republics of the past, and usually the additional power has been given, at the instance of the "common people." While the theory of socialism is a beautiful one, human nature must be changed to make it a success. There are two well denned classes of socialists. The educated theorist who claims to have eliminated greed from his nature, and who prates of the equality of man; and the uneducated socialist who thinks it wrong for any man to have more than himself. The Theorist is a fraud, and should be watched by the police, as mild forms of lunacy soon drift to violence. His only danger is in injury to himself and the advice he gives others. It is but a step from the theory that it is only right to work entirely for the public good, to the position that the public should receive the benefit of all personal endeavor. The theoretical socialist talks of the beauties of socialism from the stand point of the "giver," while his ignorant followers interpret this to mean that the public should have the power to "take." The unfortunate thing about this agitation is the fact that the later class is gaining the most headway. This under current of thought is so sweeping, that I have been surprised in conversation with Senators, Congressmen and Managing Editors of several of our great dailies, when I have suggested that this agitation was a tendency toward socialism, to hear the expression, "that possibly it was coming." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Socialism One of the most remarkable and hopeful aspects of the present great revival of Socialism, and one of the earnests of its ultimate triumph, is the sudden multitude of capable workers it has called into activity. The older movement in the "eighties" had only a few spokesmen and writers; now one can scarcely take up a local newspaper without finding evidence of capable exponents. Socialism, it is scarcely too much to say, has given men souls, has created minds; never was there a movement so independent of its leaders, so sure to produce men at its need. Here, for instance, is Mr. Henderson, with this admirable tract of his. I know he will forgive my confessing that I had never heard of him until my friend Mr. Gerald Gould called my attention to his manuscript. And here it is, closely and clearly reasoned, persuasive, plain, and easy. Let the reader compare it with Mr. Arnold Forster's recent ridiculous attack upon the Socialist position - or rather, I should say, his recent misunderstanding and misstatement of the Socialist position. Let the reader put it thoughtfully beside the utterance of any contemporary anti-Socialist, except, let us say, Mr. Mallock. There is no gainsaying its superior grip, its force, its conviction. It is one more good weapon for the propaganda of the most inspiring movement, the best-equipped movement intellectually, that the world has ever seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialism of to-Day: A Source-Book of the Present Position and Recent Development of the Socialist and Labor Parties in All Countries For many years all books about Socialism - whether in favor or against it - were concerned mainly with theory. About the year 1900, Socialist and Labor parties grew to be political factors of importance in several of the great nations, developing programs of reform, the sincerity and practicality of which were beginning to be tested by experience. Then the second stage of Socialist literature set in; Socialism was presented, both by Socialists and by anti-Socialists, as a movement. The time for a third stage is at hand, and it will mark a revolution in the treatment of the subject. Even when Socialism is regarded as a movement, the difficulty remains that it must be presented by an individual, who is either a Socialist or an anti-Socialist. In either case partisanship almost inevitably creeps in, and the reader's only recourse is to refer to a number of volumes before he can be certain he has secured a non-partisan and balanced view. The time has arrived when the educated public will demand that this great movement be discussed in a more rigidly scientific manner - a treatment that can be secured only by the publication of original documents with the minimum of editorial comment, the selection of such documents being made exclusively with a view to their importance and without regard to their tendency. We believe that the present volume is the first international and comprehensive source-book dealing with the Socialist movement in any language.
