Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and the Survival of the Fittest The Mississippi delta is a triangular stretch of country beginning at the seashore at either side of the river's mouth. And extending. Or rather narrowing. To a point some two hundred miles up the stream. It is formed of alluvial matter deposited in a manner about to be described. The Mississippi. With the Missouri. Is the longest river in the world. And is fed by numerous tribui[.y streams. Ll. In fact. Drains an immense area. At some part or other of this area floods are constantly occurring. Everybody knows that floods of even moderate dimensions wash away river banks and bottoms and carry the solid matter downward towards the'sea. Thus is the Mississippi constantly being charged at some point with leaves or grass or earth. As the river and its tributaries take their rise in high altitudes. The water flows rather rapidly and carries the solid matter along. This happens until a point is reached about two hundred miles from the sea. Here a level country is encountered. The river widens. The water flows sluggishly. And the solid matter is gradually but surely deposited on the bottom. Lt happens that this part of the world is peculiarly adapted for the production of cypress trees. If an area be cleared it will be found to be covered with a cypress forest in a very short time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism for Students This little work consists of a series of articles reprinted from the columns of "The International Socialist Review," and written in answer to the request of its editor for a study course in Socialism. The aim of the author is to indicate in briefest outline some of the more salient points in the Socialist philosophy, so as to give the reader an inkling into the nature of the modern Socialist movement. At best this treatise can serve only as a framework. The much more important task of rearing the structure remains for the student. It is hoped that the course of reading, suggested in the appendix, will be found of service in this respect. So far as possible the author has followed the beaten path of Socialist thought and purposely tried to avoid phases of the question over which there is serious dispute. Where anything new is offered, of course he alone is responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Socialism The Socialist remedy for the ills which confront society is, of course, the public ownership and the democratic management of all industry of social value. On the whole, the answer is definite and positive. True, the Socialist ranks harbor various opinions as to what constitutes democratic management. One camp maintains that the Socially-valuable industries, after becoming publicly-owned, should be operated by the Government. Another camp, feeling more compellingly the call of syndicalism and guild socialism, would have the publicly-owned industries operated primarily by their workers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism This little book, written with the purpose of presenting in a popular and readable form, ideas which have been treated more seriously elsewhere, is almost wholly descriptive of a form of social and industrial organization which the writer conceives to be in harmony with the principle of social justice elsewhere enunciated. The problem of practical socialism is as old as civilization. In all centuries men have dreamed of a golden age in which all things would be made perfect, and have struggled to devise laws and systems under which men might cooperate in harmony, and all have sufficient for their needs. Yet, at the present day, the problem appears to be as little understood as in the beginning. From the time of Moses and Plato to that of the more modern Utopian imaginings which hold our interest for a passing day and are soon forgotten, philosophers have left but futile records of their speculations. Hence men have come to think of the problem as one which does not come within the sphere of exact science. He who claims to have reached a solution of the problem must necessarily face an incredulous audience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism in Theory and Practice The socialist movement has grown immensely within the last decade, and its growth still continues unabated in all civilized countries of the world. What is the secret of that growth; what are the aims and methods of the movement; and what does it portend for the future of the human race? These are questions which persons of intellect can ignore no longer, and they are questions which cannot be answered without much thought and study. In this book I have endeavored to present to the public a brief summary of the socialist philosophy in its bearing on the most important social institutions and problems of our time, and a condensed account of the history, methods, and achievements of the socialist movement of the world. Socialism is a criticism of modern social conditions, a theory of social progress, an ideal of social organization, and a practical movement of the masses. To be fully understood it must be studied in all of these phases, and the fact that this book is probably the first attempt to accomplish that task, inadequate as that attempt may be, is sufficient justification for its publication. Grateful acknowledgment is hereby made for many valuable suggestions which I have received from Mr. W. J. Ghent, who has carefully read the proofs, and from Mr. Rufus W. Weeks, who has read the manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism, Utopian and Scientific This little volume is an exact reproduction of the standard English translation of one of the most noteworthy books of the nineteenth cen tury. To Engels scarcely less than to Marx is due the impetus to clear thinking which has placed the Socialism of continental Europe in a commanding position, where it is recognized as the hope of the workers and the terror of the rul ers. Socialism utopian and scientific has been translated into the language of every capi talist nation, and wherever it has gone it has been an inspiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Barbarism to Socialism; The Great Sociological Crisis in a New Light: The Light of Evolution, Reason, and Moderation, Adapted for Students of Socialism This book follows no beaten path in the discussion of its subject. It treats both Socialism itself and the causes which have made Socialism inevitable, in a manner that lends freshness to the theme, even for the Socialist reader. It is no mere re-hash of the old arguments served in a new dish, but in fact a new book, in matter, manner and spirit. It presents Socialism in its entirety and its greatness, unhampered by any inadequate conceptions and unlimited by any one-sided philosophy. Its design is not so much to please Socialists as it is to make Socialists, by presenting the subject in a manner that will effectually appeal to both the head and heart of all classes of readers. If some Socialists should discover from reading the book that there is something else in Socialism besides the mere material wants of the wage-worker, let them not be discouraged - it will do them good. If the non-Socialist or anti-Socialist reader discovers that Socialism is not the kind of thing he thought it was, but that it is in reality the only way out of our social, political and industrial inferno, let him be true to himself and dare stand for the right.
