Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II THE ETHICS OF INEQUALITY In seeing that the "Coming Slavery " of the socialist state may become the " service that is perfect freedom," we have dissipated one of the strongest elements in the religious distrust of socialism. But our pilgrim, pausing between two ideals, can hardly be ready to accept the new faith yet. For he cannot forget the lovely light in which the Apologia of Religion placed the moral achievements of the old order, --too fine to abandon without regret even on lower levels, and offering a counsel of perfection full of rare spiritual beauty. The unexplored country ahead is more alluring than we had anticipated; yet from the dear land in which we are abiding, how well we have discerned the stars! We will not move on while our hearts would still be drawn to wistful retrospect; rather let us look around us once more, and scrutinize the moral assets of our present-day civilization more closely, on the lower levels first and then on the higher. The primary fact about our civilization is that it is founded, like all others from time immemorial, on social and industrial inequality. This broad point of agreement between capitalism and former society, notably in the Middle Ages, is our reason for not rejecting at once that Apologia of Religion which points us to the spiritual victories of the past as a reason for refusing to change the basis of the social structure in the future. It is of course the socialist aim to diminish such inequalities, and what we have to do is to inquire whether such a change would help or hinder spiritual life: we must compare the ethics actually attendant on social inequality with those which equality is likely to engender. Just because our present ethics are rooted in economic inequality, ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the whole system of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, dealing with Deng Xiaoping’s theory, the socialist market economy, a moderately well-off (Xiaokang) society, China’s practice and theory of socialist democracy, human rights, and Xi Jinping’s Marxism. In short, the resolute focus is the Reform and Opening-Up. Socialism with Chinese Characteristics is one of the most important global realities today. However, the concept and its practice remain largely misunderstood outside China. This book sets to redress such a lack of knowledge, by making available to non-Chinese speakers the sophisticated debates and conclusions in China concerning socialism with Chinese Characteristics. It presents this material in a way that is both accessible and thorough.

Book excerpt: Expanding the world of his classic-in-the-making debut novel Early Work, Andrew Martin’s Cool for America is a hilarious collection of overlapping stories that explores the dark zone between artistic ambition and its achievement The collection is bookended by the misadventures of Leslie, a young woman (first introduced in Early Work) who moves from New York to Missoula, Montana to try to draw herself out of a lingering depression, and, over the course of the book, gains painful insight into herself through a series of intense friendships and relationships. Other stories follow young men and women, alone and in couples, pushing hard against, and often crashing into, the limits of their abilities as writers and partners. In one story, two New Jersey siblings with substance-abuse problems relapse together on Christmas Eve; in another, a young couple tries to make sense of an increasingly unhinged veterinarian who seems to be tapping, deliberately or otherwise, into the unspoken troubles between them. In tales about characters as they age from punk shows and benders to book clubs and art museums, the promise of community acts—at least temporarily—as a stay against despair. Running throughout Cool for America is the characters’ yearning for transcendence through art: the hope that, maybe, the perfect, or even just the good-enough sentence, can finally make things right.

Book excerpt: As unusual a work today as it was on publication, Leatham himself said of his foray into matters philosophical that the book was 'an effort to show in detail the social and secular benefits of ethics, as distinguished from their theological origin.' Fascinating as the early work of a man who lived uncompromisingly by his Socialist principles through his long and productive life. Also includes the 1891 pamphlet 'Was Jesus Christ a Socialist?'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Character: A Contribution Towards a System of Applied Ethics The occasional spectacle of great devotion to the public good sometimes inclines one to think that faith is not so much dead as that the form of it has merely changed; that it is now social instead of religious; that whereas men formerly believed in a Moral Governor of the universe whom they could not see, and a future life of which they did not know, they now believe in the advent of a great Social Revolution in spite of many and disheartening evidences of the slowness of social progress. But this devotion to the public good is confined to a comparative few; the generations now living do not generally deserve any credit for it; and it springs not so much from faith as from confidence. Faith implies an element of credulity: it is belief without evidence, belief held sometimes contrary to the believer's experience. But the belief in a great social future and its near advent may be a reasoned and reasonable one. The progress made in the past is a guarantee of progress in the future; and the belief in a Social Revolution becomes certainty when we see how little the present system has to offer to the self-interest of those who hold the vast preponderance of political power. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Character Can anyone who is not utterly callous profess himself to be content with our present social system? If he is content, he must either be blind or live far remote from our main centres of population. Let him visit the nearest industrial city and then defend, if he can, the system which brings such places into existence. Our industrial cities produce the wealth which is necessary to modern civilization; and what sinks of misery they are! Everyone detests them, except perhaps the capitalists who grow rich there. What English family would choose to live in Sheffield or Wolverhampton, still less in that full-blown growth of competitive commercialism, the East End of London? The material evils of our system are gross and palpable, and have made us a byword of reproach throughout the world. But corresponding to them there is also a spiritual mischief, which is even more deplorable to a thoughtful mind; a low morality, which is not confined to the poor people who live in the slums but spreads corruptingly through every rank and class of the community.
